His defense is likely better than Arcia and Parmalee as well, which isn't saying much. If we needed a 4th OF/Dh type yes but we have a bunch of those the way it is. What we need is some guys that can cover some ground and catch the ball, imo.
The problem is that the "perfect " pitchers will cost north of $20m a year for many years and TR will never do that. So in order to improve the pitching staff you go with young unproven guys which seldom works or sign some flawed guys to go with the young guys and hope like heck you get a Hughes year out of them. Averaging 96 losses over the last 4 years should tell us we need lots of help. If you end up with excess that is a very good thing. Excess talent can help fill a hole down the road.
Plouffe will give you a little more, but not much more, with the bat and Escobar gives you a little more range in the field so about a wash, imo. If you can get a decent outfielder or starting pitcher do it.
Masterson is a lot like Hughes was last year, coming off a down year. Hughes has been good in even years and not good in odd years. Masterson is the other way good in odd years and not so much in even years. Their good years are a lot alike as are their bad years. You can never have enough good pitching and he can be good at times.
Not unlike Mauer and the Twins the Marlins nearly have to sign him. The money isn't that big a deal at his age and they will no doubt insure it against major injuries. These teams make so much money it's kind of nice to see some of it going to a very good player and he is still very young. Still a ways from his prime, imo.
Reports are that Tomas is close to signing. That should solve our left field problem, I have no doubt he'll be signing with the Twins. We won't need Hicks so much then either!
Seven coaches with the manager so there are 3 spots left to fill, I think. Bull pen coach, pitching coach and bench coach. My guess is that Rudy will also be 1B coach.
He averaged 93 games a year over the 3 years in Col. Not sure what the Mets are thinking even if they didn't lose the draft pick it would be stupid, imo.
After getting over the initial disappointment of Scott Ullger not being named the new manager I think I'll be ok with this until the first loss anyway!
We'll see when the coaches are hired. If they are all re-cycled ex Twins or out of the minor league system with only a token outsider we'll have a better idea how this search really went. I wonder how long it's been since a coach has been hired that didn't have ties to the Twins, was an actual outsider? My guess is Joe Vavra over 10 years ago.
You'd think they know all they need to know about Molitor by now. The longer this drags out I think the less likely Molitor gets the job. Or maybe not, now I'm really confused.
