I am not moving the goalposts. The FO said they would target impact pitching this offseason. It's December...we have nearly 4 months left of offseason.

Did anyone realistically think that the Twins had a shot at signing Stras or Cole? Impact pitching means more than the top 2 names on the market....and the offseason isn't even close to being over.

Nick Gordon is 24, Javier is 20. You know what other prospects the Twins didn't trade? Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco and Mitch Garver who are all now All Star caliber players. The trade offer from the Mets was reportedly Buxton AND Lewis, which is an extreme overpay. The only free agent that has signed so far that the Twins probably had their eyes on is Wheeler, whom now we know wanted to be on the East Coast. How are Ryu and Bumgarner not difference makers? There is a lot of talent left in free agency. Don't get blinded by the only thing available are the top names.

That's pure speculation. For all we know they could have been in contact with Madbum since the day free agents filed and there is a good chance that he was never going to sign before Cole and Strasburg dictated the market.

Cole isn't some big free agent. It's going to take the biggest offer the game has ever seen to get him to pitch here. It's just not realistic to even think it could and will happen.

And they could sign Cole for 40M a season and lose Game 1, 2-1 and go onto get swept. Baseball is a team game and I think some people forget this offense only scored 6 runs in 3 games against the Yankees. That more than likely isn't getting it done even if they had 2 aces in today's game. Everyone aspires for a better than 3 and out but throwing gaudy money at Cole isn't going to automatically win anything. The team with Cole and Verlander lost this year. Strasburg, the guy who just signed the biggest SP AAV contract ever, just won his 1st playoff series this year and he's been in the league for 10 years. I'd love to be wrong here, but a team like the Twins cannot afford the negative ramifications that signing THAT kind of contract could have.

I gotta agree. As much as I would love to have Cole on this staff, that 7-8 years for a starter just seems nuts, especially at that price.

This might be an exaggeration. Cole made $13.5M last year and threw 3362 pitches. That comes out to $4,015 per pitch. Even if he gets...say....$35M AAV and throws the same number of pitches, you are still only looking at $10,410 per pitch, which......I would dare to guess you make more than that.

How many contracts out there is the last year drastically less than the rest of the contract? It rarely ever happens that way. You see front loaded contracts from time to time, but they are usually backloaded. Which pitcher is taking a 33-33-33-12? I'm guessing he would rather just bet on himself and take the 3/100 over 4/112 set up that way.

I really think Littell is done as a starter. He looked like he could turn into a a pretty nice bullpen asset as the season progressed last year. -
Because for an organization it's just good business. Paying a little bit more for a 2 year deal over a 5/6 year deal certainly has it's benefits. The player you are signing today could be a very different player 3-4 years down the line. An injury in Year 1 of a 5-6 year deal could be catastrophic if that player never returns to form. Lottery is different because $1 today is worth more than $1 tomorrow, it's time value of money and there are a lot of tax implications on when you take the money. Totally different animal than contracts.

Fair enough, but that still doesn't mean he doesn't have upside. Yes, he's not Wheeler, Cole, or Strasburg, but it's certainly a decent addition to the club.

Pham is a better hitter, but much is probably a stretch. He is certainly a more well rounded hitter with the walks he takes. Pham last season: .273/.369/.450 33 2B, 21 HR, 123 K in 654 PA Rosario last season: .276/.300/.500 28 2B, 32 HR, 86 K in 590 PA Pham is 3+ years older than Eddie too.

When he got suspended last year I would say he was probably the front runner to start game 1 in the postseason. Yes, he is not a top of the rotation guy everyone wants, but there is certainly upside.

Amazing value and signing. For everyone calling him a "good 4 or 5" forget how excellent he was in July and August last season.

That is based off of a half a year being a reliever after being a pretty mediocre starter, that's bananas. Happy Holidays to Drew.

Even though they need a front line starter, that shouldn't be the entire off season plan. If they see something in Bundy that would lead them to believe he could an upgrade at the #4 starter in the rotation or as a valuable member of the pen, then go for it. Don't ignore places to improve the roster because you have an a hole at the top end of the starting rotation.

The decreased velocity makes me think he might be a starter turned reliever, and could be valuable. He has always had good stuff. It would be worth kicking the tires on if the price is right IMO.

It was a year more than predicted for Gibby, but AAV is similar. You are going to have to spend the money if you want a Cole/Stras/MadBum/Wheeler period, but I really don't this signing moves their needle much. -
Very refreshing to know he had the surgery already and this didn't come out in say late Feb. Heal up quickly Jorge!
