  1. Joe actually isn't a mediocre 1B who actually posted a positive fielding value in his 1st year playing the position and it was very apparent while he struggled early on he only got better as the season went on. People need to get past the notion that your 1B should be a guy who hits 40 HR and drives in 120 runs. While I agree Joe has no business batting 3rd, it's not his fault that Gardy continually put him there. His has the numbers of a #2 hitter for basically his entire career. Even with Joe arguably having his worst season as a pro, his OBP of 361 still led the team. Joe is not going to get traded. His contract always assures that and the fact he is Joe Mauer playing for the Twins cements it. While he is not worth his contract, even in his worst season fangraphs still had his worth at $10.6M last year. I'm calling for a bounce back season from Joe.
  2. As much I would have liked the Twins to sign Neshek, paying a reliever 6M+ really isn't something the Twins should be doing. The only really upside would him being a trade chip come the trade deadline.
  3. If the team isn't going to compete for a WS title this year, which I think we can agree they won't, why not give Meyer a starting spot and see what he has rather than sign a 32 year old for 8 figures and multiple years?
  4. Let's say you give Santana a 4 year deal. Now in the rotation you have Santana locked up through 2018, Nolasco through 2017 and assuming Hughes gets a much deserved an extension, you have him through 2018+. You now have 3/5 of your rotation on a rebuilding team all over the age of 30 and all making 10M+ per season. Add in the fact you have 2nd year starter Gibson, now we have 4/5 of the rotation with players like Meyer/May/Berrios/ Gonsalves coming up through the system and should be in line for starts. What do you do when if say Meyer and Berrios deserve starts by two older veterans making big salaries are undererforming? Bench them? You can't send them down. The trade market for aging starters with big contracts pitching below their worth isn't good. While Santana surely adds value now and is surely a Top 5, probably 3, SP on the team right now.....will he be in 2 years? 3 years? That's where the 3-4 year contract is going to get a team like the Twins in trouble right now. Just how I see it.
  5. Agree 100%. I think the Twins signing Santana anything longer than 2 years would be a mistake.
  6. I don't see why there is so much in motion to trade Pinto. What value does he exactly have? It's known he hasn't been the best catcher and he had a down season at the plate in Minnesota. There can't be much of a market for him. Best case scenerio the Twins trade low oh him and he never puts it together and it was a good decision to get rid of him. Worst case scenerio, the Twins trade low on him, a team gives him the reigns as their starting catcher, he improves to be a serviceable catcher and becomes a 280/350/425 hitter and the Twins look dumb giving up on him. What's the harm in letting him be the backup catcher and starting a few times per week? I just can't see anyone giving up anything of value for Pinto,
  7. Besides his lower K/9 what was pedestrian about his season? As a 19 year old he was competing with 75% of guys 2-3 years older than him. He would def. be on my prospects to breakout next year.
  8. I think as much as anyone here would love a top of the line SP, the realistic chances of the Twins bringing one in either through free agency or trade has to be very, very, very low right now.
  9. I really think there is no chance Nolasco gets moved. It would be completely selling low. It's worth the risk that he improved this year and has more value at the deadline than just to cut bait and trade his right now. At least IMO. I really hope the Twins don't acquire a catcher and at least give Pinto a chance to catch some innings. He would become quite the asset with his bat if he could become even a serviceable backstop.
  10. I think Gibson gets a bad rap around here. 2014 was technically his 1st full season after throwing on 51 innings in 2013. He improved his BB/9 and K/9 and he very much keeps the ball in the ballpark. His FIP last year was a respectable 3.80. He did struggle down the stretch, which could still be an impact of TJ surgery in 2012. The guy will never be a huge K guy, and sometimes I get the feeling around here that if you don't strike out a ton of guys you cannot be a good starting pitching option, which just isn't true. 2015 will be an interesting season for him.
  11. When it came out that Ryan had offered Santana/Garza, Meyer had pitched a total of 70 innings above A ball and May was walking 4 batters with a 4.51 ERA in AA. After they both showed a lot of promise last year, I can't see a guy like Santana being offered a 3-4 year deal at this point. I do think anyone who realistically thought that the Twins were going to be serious contenders for Lester/Scherzer were living in a fantasy land.
  12. Let's not pretend that Revere is a superb CF, cause he is not. He belongs in a corner OF spot.
  13. Via Bob Nightengale on twitter. 4 years, $44M. Seems like a lot, no?
  14. As a Twins fan, I couldn't care less about his view on gay marriage, regardless of what I think personally.
  15. That's assuming that Rasmus signs a 1 year deal....then declines $13-15M dollar arbitration deal.
  16. While the OF as a whole seems to be lacking, other than his bat his scouting reports don't seem to bring too much to the table. It seems people want the Twins to sign Tomas as a proof they are willing to spend money than what they would get on the field for him. If you are going to drop 12-15 per year on a player, go find a pitcher and a cheap defensive first OF, IMO.
  17. While i get what you are saying, how much more risk is a 1 year, $7M deal to a guy like Anderson, or a 5 year, 105M deal to a guy like Shields or 4/65 to Santana? If Anderson stays healthy you could have a very nice pitcher either to sign to an extension or a great trade chip. If he can't, you only committed to 1 year and a younger player gets starts. With a vet like Shields/Santana you lose a draft pick, pay considerably more per season and become committed to multiple years on players on the wrong side of 30. I do really think both of these kind of signings have a fair share of risk involved.
  18. Neither the Hammel nor the Anderson picks would surprise me as both guys could probably be had on short deals, and a bounce back candidate in Anderson. Also, it was in the next post on MLBTR, they always have a pick'um contest. I got a whoopin' 6 right last year. Prizes for the Top 5, something to do during the slow off-season. 19. I like this. Burton, Duensing and Swarzak all move on while keeping around Thielbar, Fien and Perkins. It leaves guys like Tonkin, Pressly, Oliveros and Pelfrey if they decide to go that route among the younger power arms to fill out a pen. I could see a veteran being brought in too. I think asking Perkins and 5-6 rookies probably isn't going to happen.
  20. On the Pinto front.....I really think it depends on which Suzuki shows up next season...early season Suzuki or August-October Suzuki. If he struggles with the stick I can't see any reason not to give Pinto more reps behind the plate.
  21. After the double he stole 3rd on a close play and eventually scored. His 5th AB on a 1-0 count he hit a hard liner through the hole between 3rd and SS, good for a single.
  22. After pulling a ball that almost left the park down the left field line but went foul, Buxton sliced a ball down the right field line that was fair by 5 feet or so and bounced over the wall. It was a sure triple for sure, he was flying around 1st. RBI double anyways. 2-4, 2B, SB and RBI so far.
  23. I missed his first AB. Buxton struck out in his 3rd at bat. Completely fooled on an inside curveball. Adam started the 6tg, got two groundouts, including a great diving play by Casteel. Gave up a single in a line drive over the 2nd basemen then strick out the last batter on a low inside breaking pitch. He is really imposing on the mound. On a side note, Mark Appel is sitting in the section right next to me, signing a lot of autographs.
  24. I'm sitting behind home plate. Buxton tracked down a nice fly in right on the warning track to end the 2nd. He got up in the 3rd hit a nice line drive single to center and then stole 2nd easily. Rosario not in the lineup.
  25. I'm heading down to the Phoenix area tonight and right now it is in the plans to go see the Rafters take on the Desert Dogs tomorrow. If I make it to the game I will be sure to snap a few pictures and give some analysis.
