  1. How many starters out there are only 2 pitch pitchers? I am going to assume there aren't that many at all. It's not a myth that a starter needs 3 pitchers to be successful. Remember his sample size was only 10 starts last year, even though he did show a lot of potential.
  2. How much value would Duffy realistically have in the pen over Tonkin? With Perkins, Jepsen and May more than likely being in the high leverage and late positions Duffy would be regulated to some middle relief role. Having him work on and work in the changeup while continuing to throw starters innings in AAA seems like a much better usage.....at least IMO.
  3. It's interesting hearing mechanics from a pitcher's point of view. There's so much talk on here about straight velocity and pitch type, meanwhile he is talking about controlling different speeds on the same pitch. I really like that even he realizes that a better changeup would be big for him. Do they track minor league pitch selection like they do for the majors somewhere?
  4. Or that TR decided that May would be more valuable in the pen after seeing his numbers flourish in that role last year, instead of signing a $5-$7M free agent to a multi year deal because of the other starters that are already on the team.
  5. I would assume more than 3 AB for Park I would be willing to bet all 3 of them see a lot of at bats in Spring Training.
  6. Per Billy Witz on twitter: On this note, this can't be good for Jose Reyes, who is reportedly being taken to trial.
  7. How long does he actually spend there? The off-season is nearly 5 months long. You are kidding yourself if you think right as the off-season starts they go into training mode for next season. If he spends 2 weeks in Haiti it sure beats the guys who go on 2-3 or more weeks in Mexico or the Caribbean. With little to no free time during a grueling 6 month season I would guess that most major leaguers, especially veterans, spend a lot more time vacationing-lounging-family time than they do training and thinking about baseball. As easy of us to say...hey he's making $8 million it should be baseball time all the time, the reality that it isn't.
  8. I paid near twice as much to sit in the 200 OF level seats at Yankee Stadium than I paid to sit in the 100 level seats 10 rows behind the dugout at Target Field.
  9. A lot of pessimism for predictions considering it's not even Christmas. Here's a reminder. This was the Opening Day roster last season. "This" team went on to win 83 games. STARTING PITCHERS Phil Hughes Mike Pelfrey Ricky Nolasco Kyle Gibson Tommy Milone RELIEF PITCHERS Glen Perkins Casey Fien Brian Duensing Aaron Thompson Blaine Boyer Tim Stauffer JR Graham CATCHERS Kurt Suzuki Chris Herrmann INFIELDERS Joe Mauer Brian Dozier Trevor Plouffe Danny Santana Eduardo Escobar Eduardo Nunez Kennys Vargas OUTFIELDERS Oswaldo Arcia Jordan Schafer Torii Hunter Shane Robinson
  10. You will more than likely see him twice more this season, let's hope he does something to put him back on your radar But back to the topic.......Mauer created the perfect storm of unreachable goals for himself. Being from the area, being the fantastic high school athlete, going #1 to the hometown team, producing at high levels early in his career, the batting titles and up through 2009 and winning the MVP. People always just wanted more out of Mauer, especially when he got the big contract. Let's not sugar coat it, the last to years were tough to watch....but even if Joe bounced back with a .300/.390/.430 year this upcoming season, people would still complain.
  11. Abad is a perfect example at how fickle relievers are. If would have hit free agency after 2014 he probably would have gotten a multi year deal. He has a down year and the Twins sign him to a minor league contract. I like the signing, he has upside.
  12. Hint hint, Mauer isn't 24 anymore. He will 33 a few weeks after opening day has had a ton of stress on his knees and anyone that's watched him round the bases and lag out doubles knows he would be a complete liability in the OF. I don't like the idea of Sano in the OF, but all the reasoning on this whole thread just relates to his weight. Have you seen the guy play? For his size he is quick and I am guessing management has seen a lot more of how he moves more than all of us. And Who said there was an obsession to keep Plouffe? For all we know TR could have been trying to peddle Plouffe the entire offseason without getting an offer he finds suitable.
  13. I just think that most Twins fans already know that Berrios won't come out of the gate with the Twins with all the other options on the club and under contract. I'd love to see him start the season in the rotation, but do believe there's a tiny chance at it actually happening.
  14. I think that depends. What do you do if you are TR and Nolasco comes to ST in shape and healthy and looks like his old self? If the Twins ran out a rotation of Hughes-Santana-Nolasco-Duffy-Milone with May as a primary setup man with Jepson and Perkins, I think I could handle it. Then again if Nolasco comes out as a shell of himself, Milone is traded, someone gets injured etc. I don't think I could watch May in the pen.
  15. Maybe I am just a Gibson fanboy, but why would they look to trade him? He just finished his 2nd full season after a 10 start cup of coffee in 2013. He is 28 and has two productive years under his belt, improved his K's 2 straight years now and he keeps the ball in the ballpark. While I don't think he will ever become a dominant starter, if he can figure out how to stay more productive through the 2nd half of the season I think he is a very nice and cheap piece for any rotation. Gibson was essentially just as good as Jeff Samardzija last season. Gibson walked more, Samardzija gave up more HR and he just signed a huge contract.
  16. I've saved the issue from 2002 and recent framed the cover and put it up in my office. Cuddy isn't on it, but I think it's a great momento of those teams. http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site569/2014/0711/20140711__140713contraction-2_300.jpg
  17. I don't see how you can give percentages when they really are no better than a blind guess. The facts. Shields turns 34 in 3 weeks. His BB/9 and HR/9 were both nearly career highs even though he pitched in a pitcher's park and in the NL. The velocity on every single one of his pitches was down between .5 - 1.5 MPH, his ERA was the worst it had been in 5 years, his FIP the highest it's ever been and his LOB% was the best it's ever been. I won't ignore his K/9 as they were up, a career high even, but it's the only positive stat. I am a Shields fan and enjoy watching him pitch, but every warning sign points to decline, while the money is pretty damn big, even taking Nolasco into consideration. 3 years of Shields or 2 years of Nolasco and $39 million dollars?
  18. I like this and feel the same way. One can point to the luckiness of the month of May and I could say a full year of Sano and Santana. Overall I think they should be better.
  19. I was thought your hatred and dislike of Plouffe was just a schtick, but I'm starting to believe you have some strong feelings about him.
  20. Pelfrey also go 30 starts to Millone's 23. fWAR probably not the best to compare to starting pitchers with different amount of playing time.
  21. So offer him arbitration and then trade him. He has value. If the Twins don't tender him I would guarantee he would get a multi year deal from another club.
  22. Looking at the OF on the roster, what's the chances they look at drafting one in the Rule V? With Robinson and Hicks gone it has to be a possibility right?
  23. As per Paul Hoynes, beat writer for the Indians.
  24. Or he plays out his arb years and looks to make 300M+ in free agency while the Twins are out Kepler, Berrios, Jay and Gordon who all have pretty high ceilings. Selling the farm and betting on one player, especially a player with arm injuries in the past just doesn't sit well with me.
