Nobody should really want an inning eater on their staff. If nothing else, the 5 starter are the pitchers you are developing. Signing an innings eater means you don’t have anything in the pipeline. Lynn and Gibson have had success more than just being inning eaters in the past. The Cardinals must think they can tweak them to get back to mid rotation starter levels. They have always been about winning. Inning eaters are for teams like that don’t have the starts and know they are not going to contend. I would think the Royals would fit that category

The Twins Should Not Trade Max Kepler
old nurse replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The return based on past trades by other teams would be a quality reliever and low level prospects. The return is less of a question mark in the bullpen with more questions i the outfield- 139 replies

Should the Twins Try Their Own Bullpen Brother Act?
old nurse replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What they did last year with Varland really has no bearing as they did move him to the 40 man roster Yes the Dodgers made the trade of 2 players off the 40 man roster for 1 that does not need to be on the 40 man. In that process they traded a reliever. That does not necessarily mean they have more they want to move on from. They also just turned a reliever that appears to not be a late innings pitcher and a low ranked AA prospect who was on the 40 man into a higher ranked prospect. It would not be unreasonable to think they would want to do the same with Gus Is he worth that kind of capital? Your own statements would say not. -
Should the Twins Try Their Own Bullpen Brother Act?
old nurse replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It would depend on what the Dodgers have in their system for relievers they can shuttle and develop. If the answer is not many then the price would be too high. If it is fairly full it would still take a decent prospect. It is a step above looking through the available AAA, AAAA pitchers that are available that still have options. Not much of a one. -
The Pre-Offseason Move that helps sets up the rotation for years to come.
old nurse commented on Brandon's blog entry in Blog Brandon
The question is what kind of season are you preparing for? 162 and happy with that result or 184 game season and really happy with that result. Getting 35 starts out of Ober, Ryan, Paddack and Varland isn’t going to happen. An average of 25 each would be pushing it. With that the team would have to count on 2 of the minor league pitchers to step up in development. That is a lot to expect. They need a quality starter. -

This is the Sonny Gray trade vs Pablo Lopez trade. The second option you list costs more, higher risk, yet higher reward if successful in terms of the long term. The first option in the end requires lucky drafting., getting a player like Petty vs Cavacao. The problem is that any trade could end up like the Mahle trade where the team will have to invest more to make the trade work

The Twins and Brewers Are Perfect Trade Partners
old nurse replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
2 teams looking to cut payroll are not trading less expensive players for more expensive one. As mentioned, the Twins do have options in the outfield. They still have noy given up on larnach Taylor is drawing interest as an inexpensive fill in outfielder. He has value as a defensive outfielder on a contract similar to what he signed for with the Twins.. Somebody may think they can fix the strikeouts and offer a little more., but I wouldn’t expect a $10 million deal- 30 replies

Ticket price complaint. 100 a seat means you were sitting in the best seats. 17 bucks will get you into a game. 33 or so each on food Food like what used to be at the Metrodome or Met Stadium should have cost $6.each. Parking somewhere around $100 Hmmm I am starting to suspect Pinocchio is at play here

There Aren't Many Johan Santanas These Days
old nurse replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It took them 3 years for Santana to develop. Not every team has that luxury. A Santana is also part of the reason why they don’t have that luxury. Done at 30. Pitch counts and innings may have prolonged his career. Bullpens are used more so there isn’t a stash spot. The number of pitchers selected appears to be geared towards finding bullpen pitchers, swing pitchers. Wells in Baltimore, Whitlock in Boston. Are the best examples. A team still has to do their diligence in looking and protecting. Somebody else can look to see if there were DFAs that were done to protect prospects blossomed into something. That is also the byproduct of the system. Also trades to clear roster spots. I think Nick Anderson was one. Diligence finds these players. Twins have been on the short end of that, but I don’t think this regime had much use for a lot of the Ryan prospects. -
I thought when I said higher skilled it would have eliminated this kind of comment. My bad for not taking the time to go look up to see what is out there.

We shall see what the first half of the year brings. Given this year’s frugal nature signing a higher skilled bounce back type pitcher to a year contract would make the most sense over a trade. A trade only makes sense if you think that one of the high A pitchers isn’t as good as the ratings people may have. I don’t trust this FO to make that distinction seeing Petty rise, Steer outperform and Cano blossom.

The list really shows that the Twins need to add a starter. As the team has used many more than 6 through the years,

Losing players means that the team is slow developing players. Losing players also means that the team is better at picking fringe prospects than real prospects

If they filled the roster with rule v draftees you would be correct. What they add has yet to be determined, last I knew it was still early December.

Verdugo trade good comp for possible Kepler trade?
old nurse replied to chpettit19's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Any team that is trading for Kepler has a short term hole to fill in their outfield. It doesn’t matter if it is a part of a package or stand alone trade. What he is worth in trade is about a decent reliever and minor league hopefuls. I would think that most systems have an if outfielder in their system. That is someone like Larnach or even Kiersay. The if is if they just get a little better. -

Is This a Championship Core?
old nurse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The core f the team is not 3 players. The anchors of the starting rotation, Lopez and what they add, and the back of the bullpen, Duran, Jax, Thielbarr and whoever they add are core to winning.. The unhealthy core of 3 should actually be 4 with Polanco added. The continued success of Julien, Jeffers, and Wallner are equally important, as is the progression of Ober and Ryan. The core has to be that deep for the playoffs.- 62 replies

Is This a Championship Core?
old nurse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First mistake, Farmer is still part of the team. Second mistake is eye tests. In comparing Julian to all the other. 2b, Julian comes out on the low side of average defensively. Eyes have a built in bias in many cases,- 62 replies

Is This a Championship Core?
old nurse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buxton has 21 b war, 13th overall for number 2 picks. I guess that is not panning out compared to Verlander. He has the 4th most bwar of those picked in the first 2 rounds that year.- 62 replies

Only 40 pitchers last year started 30 or more games. Less than 80 started 25 games. 118 for 20 games If Law wants to deal with realism you can start with those numbers. A team would be foolish to think their 5 man rotation is going to hold up for the whole season. Or be effective for the whole season. It is not 1-5 it is 1-9. Who are the 6-9 starters. If the starters are Lopez, Ober, Ryan, Varland and Paddack, that leaves Festa and SWR as 6-7. What you have for 8 and 9 get dicey. Bullpen games require a stronger depth than the questions Twins have on their roster. It is early December and not late March. The pool of available talent will get sorted out.. we want the the world and we want it now. (For the many who wouldn’t remember the line )
-
Your argument could be made for any minor league player. The outcome would be supported by data as to what his ceiling would be. A ground ball hitter with no power. Adequate fielding but not spectacular. That is what he is and the Twins did not wreck that as far as further development, he would need to have a pretty big uptick to be viable as anything but a defensive replacement.
