  1. Forbes puts out their lists on what teams earn when they assign their values. They guessed 16.6 million for the profit for 2011. They can figure out revenue from attendance, contracts that are public for broadcast rights and merchandise, and taxes paid on concessions. They can only guess at the operating costs.
  2. They draft extremely well. The prospects received for Garza and Kazmir have not panned out. A good salesman could trade major league talent. A slick trader could trade a couple for Shields and a decent pitching prospect. Is Ryan a "slick trader"? When all he could do is trade players for prospects he came out ahead. Ryan lost when he traded the residents of Gardy's doghouse. There are those on this board who would say no to him being a slick trader. Trading for established talent and signing free agents to larger contracts is new territory for the Ryan crew.

  4. Can't fault a player for trying to get the most he can. If you don't start with a high number you are not going to get what you want. There actually might have been a chance for that type of contract except for the last two years of A Rod. They might also check the post season dip in production.
  5. and what color is the sky in your world?, even if the 1 player away was babe ruth and he pitched every 4th day , we still have too many holes..and which quality reliever did we aquire? A few pieces is not one. Reread if you have the ability to the comment about resigning Baker and trading for a pitcher. In case you can't figure it out, Brandon thinks Roeneke is a quality pitcher. A slightly positive WAR makes him better than half the pitchers the Twins threw out there for the 4-5 man out of the bullpen.
  6. You really want Santana and that contract for a year? The Royals gave up a mediocre, long time minor league pitcher and I bet they did not get the million of the buyout. 13 million for one year should buy you a better pitcher than Santana was last year. Now if the Angels loved some prospect you don't and you could get some cash.... The benefit of the inquiry is that it starts a conversation that leads you to know what mediocre prospects of yours they like. You could pluck another Brunansky off their minor league team. Would have you wanted Buerle a 4 yrs/ 60 million? Tampaa has aa few needs in the outfield. If you don't talk, you wont get anywhere
  7. The best summation so far of Inge at this point of his career. There is a lot of nonsense being written this week
  8. Because it was warmer here.
  9. The Twins pre Target Field never went after the high end free agent. There was not the revenue. I don't really think anyone really knows if Ryan can attract a top free agent. Buerle at 4/58 was deemed by most sites as overpaying. Within the budget set forth last year Ryan did not have a lot of room to maneuver. A trade for a good pitcher would help in signing a free agent. That they did not trade Willingham or Doumit at the trade deadline would at least show commitment to those you sign. Extending Doumit may help sign the player to a one year contract as performance was rewarded. The negativity towards Ryan signing a free agent is baseless.
  10. If the money is similar I would think the player then decides based on environment of the club (winning, coaching, location). A lot more money and you will hear the player talk about how they are going to help turn a franchise around. A discount to play somewhere is rare. That would be a player losing value, happy to have a contract, and trying to save face.
  11. The choice available to the Angels was deal Haren or cut him and pay 3.5 million. Haren's salary was not the sticking point for the Angels. They were not going to pay it in 2013. Any prospect for Haren had to be worth the money given to the club over the 3.5 million. I doubt there were decent offers. KC got cash for their prospect and received Santana. If the Angels gave KC more than $999,999 to KC it would be a bad deal for the Angels. Haren made 12. something million. Unless he thinks he was overpaid the further the contract is lower than that figure, the less years the contract would be. I think John is very correct on the 3/35 figure. If you wanted Haren for longer than 1 year you wouldn't trade for him because I don't think the agent would start significantly lower than the 15 million you just paid him.
  12. Check your stats. Roeneke may not have high upside but he is slightly above replacement level. Even with the terrible Coors Field stats his career results are far superior to Gray's. Mid 90's fastball and a decent bullpen coach could make for a huge improvement in his pitching.
  13. A good but nor great outfielder should net you a good but not great pitching prospect. The Twins need a great pitching prospect. A low A prospect who is great is not what the Twins have a surplus of, nor do they have a surplus of near major league talent to trade to sweeten the pot.
  14. Yeah, there have been some blatant exceptions, haven't there. My bad. :-) What trade chips has Ryan overvalued? Please don't use Bill Smith trades.
  15. Not all have the humor of USAFChief.
  16. He made 3.6 million last year. DBacks said he wasn't worth 4. per year. If there was no interest and his price fell to under 2 the Twins would look. Perkins makes 2.5. The Twins are not going to sign someone more expensive in the pen.
  17. The Twins pay for a closer. They do not pay for set up guys. They let Crain and Guerrier go rather than sign for the 4-5 million range. They will bring in another 5-6 question marks and try to unearth a gem.
  18. meh. Speculation. Guesses. Not anymore informed than the average fan on this board.
  19. Nobody said that. But did they think it? Not everybody posts every thought they have. The person who thinks the Twins are going to sign Jamie Moyer ought to not post every crazy thought.
  20. By your picture I thought you were around for Roy Smalley BTW Aren't players with home run potential usually at a corner position to begin with?
  21. If you were trying to mock Thyrloss at least propose a contract the Twins would offer.
  22. The same people will snark about the Twins being idiots for letting Blackburn go if he pitches well elsewhere.
  23. Just curious, but aside from Greinke, what free agents would you prefer to Haren? He'd actually be the guy I'd put #2 on my wish list. I agree that I don't want to trade for him because I don't feel like giving up prospects for a guy under contract for 1 year and he likely would come cheaper on the market under a multi-year deal, but still he's the guy I hope the Twins target hardest. I didn't make it clear that I would not advocate spending the money on one player. Haren is still good, just not 15.5 million good. A second thought would be for the money what is better Pavano and Blackburn or Haren and DeVries? Last years money was about the same for both pairs.
  24. The bone chips could explain why Blackburn had altered his mechanics (Parker Hagerman analysis last June).
