  1. I am sorry that you couldn't tell I wasn't 100 % serious with the answer. Boxers versus brief should have been a real big clue. I guess I have to be less subtle for you next time. Nice list of draft choices. Remember it was after the 2011 season. At that point on your lift of draftees how many were starting players, starting pitchers, or closers in 2011 with the Twins? The byproducts of the trades made by Smith, which would have been gleaned from the scouting information, how many of them were in a significant role fore the Twins when Smith left? Nice you listed the GM. Near the end of this story you can read about Deron Johnson's role in the draft For Twins scouting director Deron Johnson, scouting is true labor of love | MLB.com: News
  2. Maybe the philosophical difference was Smith did not know how to make a trade and would not admit he sucked at it. Maybe he wanted to fire the scouting department because they had not had a decent draft in a few years and the Pohlads did not want to. Maybe the whole pitch to contact thing was Smith's idea because he figured out they were cheaper pitchers and someone else in the organization saw the light. Maybe it was a boxers versus briefs thing. We can all speculate.
  3. I recall reading that with the TJ you can go back up to the level of innings you pitched pre injury, hence the limit Strsburg had and Gibson will have. Pelfrey had the arm strength to pitch the number of innings.
  4. A right hander with similar speed would be Dempster who struggled as a 21 year old and then figured it out. Kyle Lohse had a rough go his first year, also.
  5. If Doumit's stats improve defensively as a catcher than the hiring of Stienbach over Molitor was a good one. A question on the 40.1 vs 40.7. How many times was he catching the worst starters on the team? How many other regulars got the day off. Doumit was only the primary starter two years so he wasn't the front line player. Wins are a team stat, not an individual one, so who else was on the field also matters.
  6. Body fat might be a more indicative of a problem than the size itself. UZR/150 for Rolen was always pretty good until he turned 35 or so.
  7. Continuing to speculate on what you know nothing about? Here it is the edited out comment just for you. Bicker bicker bicker. My isn't this exciting for everyone to read. Posted it and changed my mind.
  8. With Cuellar to work with him at the major league level there will be a better outcome. If the fastball continues to stay towards the center of the plate then the outcome will be the same as last year.
  9. Can Doumit's range at short be any worse than Jeter's
  10. If I had a nickel for every time you have been petty or rude.
  11. He in his original post is claiming that corner defense is more important because the damage done by having lesser players in those roles is worse than having less of a glove at shortstop. If indeed the shortstop position can be manned by a poor defensive player to get the best bat possible then the current best bat on the Twins is Doumit. Please try to tell me among the bench players there is a better bat without a position. If his solution to the current Twins dilemma is to get as good as bat as possible given the current state of the Twins and Rochester rosters there wouldn't be many options. That he justifies it with Ben Revere as a corner outfielder because of his defense ignores the fact that one of the two center fielders had to play right.
  12. Since you appear to be advocating best bat possible for short than why not Doumit for SS? Since Doumit is a better LF than Willingham, Willingham to short and Doumit to left. Beloit moved Sano to third rather than short because of defense. Under your theory of having better defenders on the outside, that would appear to be a mistake as his replacements did not hit nearly as well as he did. Point really being you have to balance the defense with the offense. Yes it is putrid to have a .600 ops guy at short but there is a balance point somewhere with defense and offensive skills. Hanly has superior offensive skills that more than balance the defense as did Jeter in his younger days.
  13. The post was using statistical data and I was interested in more. I see you have a problem with that. So it is wrong to ask for more data from someone who presents data? You have the moderator behind your name, so you tell me? Should I not ask for more data and information from people? Or should I do as some and write mostly snark?
  14. In trying to assess what player brings the stat guys are using strictly batting statistics, wouldn't WAR be a little more reflective of the total effect of the player. Or in using WAR alone, the problem is that it might show the Twins should have hung onto Casilla?
  15. Nope. Hopeng that I would get the data. I see that you have nothing
  16. What is the gain in runs with OPS+ and runs lost in UZR for Kelly Johnson versus anything the Twins ran out there?
  17. I have never said the Twins should not have signed Marcum. I can understand why they might not. Then again your own post points out what the issue between the Twins and Marcum might be. Your own post says 15-20 teams contacted Marcum. We know the Brewers were not one of them. A few teams have fairly decent staffs and probably didn't contact him. The Yankees are cutting salary. It leaves a great chance that that the Twins were one of them contacting Marcum. So what was the response from Marcum?
  18. You are comparing the extremes of a subjective score and drawing hypothetical conclusions with no data to back the outcome..
  19. The analysis of the play of 2012 is correct. The analysis of how to fix it is what? They should have done something. The free agent market appeared to have a choice between no field or no hit kind of players. They have plenty of the latter. They traded what players they had to trade for a bigger need in pitching. To get a significant upgrade by the trade route would cost them a better prospect. You did not like the inaction, so what would you have wanted them to do that is a reasonable idea?
  20. Harden should not even figure into any equation of Twins pitching. If he contributes to the Twins this year it is all bonus and all good. In regards to the risk medically with Pelfrey there is none. There risk post TJ surgery is what? The procedure is done. The question there is the recovery time to be back to 100%. That is a completely different issue than Marcum. Nowhere have I read that Marcum has a clean bill of health. It is reasonable to think there is breakdown in Marcum's future. I do not know the medical reports to identify how much risk there is. I don't know what reports the teams other than the Brewers have. I know that the Brewers have exactly one very good pitcher in Gallardo and a collection of starters that can be described as less than average. With the medical reports the Brewers decided to pass on Marcum. Doesn't that raise the littlest of red flags that there is a good potential for a problem more than a medium risk? I do not disagree with that even at 7 million Marcum would be money well spent if he played for a half season. I also don't think that teams want to plan that way. The Mets can because the have a guy almost ready in AAA in Zach Wheeler. The Mets will worry about 2014 when it happens and they have that hole to fill. I don't think the Twins think that way. In regards to Pelfrey and Harden and the Twins I would think, given the Twins way of doing business, if they work out the Twins would work at resigning them.
  21. [quote name= You DON'T get it by evidence of this next thing you posted! Look' date=' before the offseason started if someone had said you could have had Shaun Marcum for an investment of LESS THAN 5 MILLION - people would've ripped that person for being pollyannish. /rant[/quote] Marcum was at 7.7 mil. and has missed time. From comments made early in the free agency period on this board 5 million would not have been out of line of what people had posted. After the signings started you would have been surprised, but your comment says before. Your own post says why teams would have shied away from him. Your are too stubborn in your beliefs to even pay attention to it. "Nothing alarming" is not a clean bill of health. Too bad you just don't get that. Marcum is a great pitcher, but the arm scares people off.
  22. His ERA as a started would lead one to say that Swarzak shouldn't be a starter. As a reliever it is a different story. His k/9 was 6 and his era 4.05. For being the long man those would be good numbers. Start at the bottom of the list for teams with poor bullpens who would take those numbers. Half of the Cardinals bullpen did not have that good of numbers. DFAd and off he would go.
  23. It is axiomatic on this board if you disagree with a core group you will be pilloried.
