  1. They would be able to designate anyone not named Thorpe, Little, or Gonsalves. There are more than enough candidates if they sign other players
  2. To fill out the bullpen there wille be Boshers, Pressly. Then there is what a team usually signs. That is the aging veteran they sign for a couple of million, the aging vets they sign to minor league contracts, the never were that have promise never achieved that they try
  3. Archer is still only 6-7 million a year. Kyle Gibson money. Tampa took Span who makes slightly less than Longoria. When Tampa trades it will be to significantly improve the team, not a salary dump like Miami.
  4. Duffey, Chagois, Curtis, Busenitz, Hildenberger Moya. 6 arms right there to take a step up. Jake Reed, Melotakis, Tyler Jay and Nick Anderson all might have a shot for mid season. In the meantime a top setup/closer to go with Rogers and Rodney would be advisable.
  5. The prospect rankings last year did not have much in the way of Twins listed. None that would have been near major league ready. There was not much to trade to procure high level talent. One would be impressed if they could have procured talent from that. Scrap heap free agents that turn golden are few and far between. They got one in Castro. That is better than most teams did.
  6. As a season plays out it would become evident what player could have had that spot. In Graham's case they had to go out and later trade for other relievers. Thompson and Tonkin were also failures to develop in 2015. Tonkin in 17 as well as Breslow and many others showed the hole was bigger than Haley
  7. When you picked a contract as an example to sign somebody couldn't you have found someone who did well after signing the contract?
  8. Hawkins, Everyday Eddie, Nathan. Perkins Kintzler Terry Ryan could find pretty good closers. It can't be too hard of job if Ryan can do it. Maybe they should have kept Ryan as special chief senior gm in charge of relief. What in the Burton Jepson debacles do you mean that no one can be perfect?
  9. The Twins could likely trade almost any unranked low level prospect for Kinley in the spring to be able to send him down.
  10. Pittsburgh picked up Burdi for international cap money. If it was money they were not going to spend they got Burdi for nothing. Burdi would cost them something . A spot on the DL means he gets paid the major league minimum. A half million for nothing might be more than the tight Pirates want to do if it looks like Burdi will be a long period for recovering rather than a short one. that may play into their decision process However, if they send him back, they pocket some money. They get a look at a prospect for free.
  11. Misiewwicz never got a mention from Sickels when grading prospects. He was in the Seattle system and did not grade into their top 50 or so prospects. An ERA of 4 will do that. Banulelos was at least rated their tenth best prospect. Shawn Armstrong has been used as a mop up pitcher and is 27. Hardly a prospect either. In either case the sum sent was not mentioned as the Mariners had around 3 million.
  12. Wasn't there a confirmed source that Dozier was going to the Dodgers for 3 prospects?
  13. It looks like the Yankees have managed to dump Headley's contract on the Padres, giving them 13 million to play with in the starting pitching market.
  14. They would do that trade in a minute if only you included Buddy Boshers
  15. The prospect here is 19. What was Rooker doing at 19? No team thought at 18 Rooker would develop into anything. Pearson at the same as Rooker was after his freshman season is starting at a higher level of success. In 3 years Pearson could be Rooker. or yet another 21 year old looking for work with no skills
  16. Fiers will probably get a 2 year deal worth about 20 million. If he is your free agent starter added he would cost any shot at competing in the playoffs. If you signed him because you traded Gibson, he only costs a little money that could have been better spent elsewhere.
  17. The last season the Twins had too many good pitchers was when? Not when they traded Garza or Lohse.. Maybe when the franchise had the Big Train. I was not around for that.
  18. The Koufax clause is not applicable to Johan as there are no sterling post seasons in Santana's resume. Koufax had an ERA of less than one in the post season. True that being in the playoffs is a team thing. Koufax started exactly one more game than Santana did in the post season. There is a night and day difference between the two. There is the 137 complete games and 42 shutouts in the regular season that Santana can't match. Koufax started 41 games in his last season. Different era or generation, but it points to the fact that they compiled the similarity in other stats in a far different situation.
  19. They also needed another bat
  20. There is contending, then there is the realistic chance of doing well in the playoffs. 2-5 against Boston, 7-12 against Cleveland, 1-5 against Houston, 2-4 against the Yankees, and horrible against the Dodgers during the regular season. The arguments for they should have done more for contending seem nitpicky. What would have the Twins have to have added to be a contender past the wild card game? A front line starter, a middle of rotation starter, a couple of set up men. The wild card game comes down to is your starter on that day or not. The divisional rounds take more than that. Without trading the mlb position players they did not have anything to trade for the front line starter.
  21. Santana's peak value would be at the trade deadline. Any value would be because he is having a decent season and can be jettisoned at the end of the year. In terms of salary dollars having an affect on the Twins payroll for the year, I doubt there is enough pitching out there that the Twins could reasonably, or slightly unreasonably bid on and get to make it to the max that the Twins could spend.
  22. Mike Scott >>>>>> Johan ? I guess the Mike Scott clause, as well as the other pitcher clauses are called t pull the names out of a hat of players who had long careers with a short window of great success. Nothing at all like Sanana's career.
  23. f he is as good as they say he is, he would likely be the Ace for most teams
  24. The hockey signings become meaningless as time, and early playoff exits goes on. It is big because the "One Of Our Own" syndrome that affects people here. As time goes on the pair becomes closer to Hughes/Nolasco
  25. Ohtani grew up in a less populated area of Japan. Other than the New York hubris of thinking they are they canter of the universe for everyone there is nothing that says Ohtani would be attracted to them
