  1. Excellent write-up Nick. I agree with Top Gun. If he doesn't perform pretty well it's going to suck. He, Escobar or Florimon have to play better than their past stats suggest.
  2. I have long felt that a little wildness is not always a bad thing. Deduno is a wildcard, but I hope he gets a shot as a SP. It would be wonderful if he could surprise us. (and all of MLB)
  3. I understand that we should not put too much stock in ST numbers, but Joe Benson has really struggled and Ramirez has been hitting. On the radio the other day it sounded like he was doing well in the outfield as well. Would it be out of the realm of possibility to see Ramirez come north?
  4. I will just weigh in and say AA for 2 reasons: 1. He is new to the Twins organization. 2. His WHIP was 1.45, BB/9 was 4.7 and his ERA was 4.87 in AA for Philly. None of those numbers scream, "Advance!".
  5. I thought so, too. The average batter age in A ball is 21.5. Thought he'd spend a year in Rookie ball. They must feel he has the makeup to be pushed. Cool.
  6. Seth! That was wonderful. Thank you. The Twins don't seem to have any MI that threaten to hit with authority, other than maybe Dozier, until Rosario is ready. Polanco may know how to swing a bat but he is a long way away (and a 2B). This is precisely why I wanted the Twins to try Dozier at SS again. Apparently they have seen enough. OK. If they are sure he's not MLB SS material then I'm sure they're right. A lot of us are anxious to have Sano (20 yo), Rosario (21 yo) and Vargas (22 yo) light up Fort Myers this year. How sad is that? A+ ball is a long way from MLB. Alas... We have the outfielders coming on now, MI a couple years behind.
  7. Thank you Thry - that comment really threw me.
  8. That comment about Arcia being out of shape bothered me, too. With all I think this kid could be I certainly hope he doesn't start taking things for granted. Tonkin has excellent SO/9 numbers, and he was 22 y/o in A+ ball. Of the 31 pitchers who appeared for the Fort Myers Miracles only one pitcher was listed as being 21 years old and none were younger. This could be a good sign. FanGraphs didn't mention him in their Twins Top 15.
  9. Buxton hit an unimpressive .248 in Rookie League. They are looking at things we don't see. Sano hit .258 last year, also underwhelming. Again, they are seeing things we aren't. I'm not saying they are right about everything. Just that they are seeing a lot more than we are. Even when we watch the same game.
  10. So very true. Well said.
  11. Benson had a .388 OBP at AA in 2011. Last year was a disaster for him. IF AA was not his ceiling and IF he comes back and proves to be a MLB player his OBP could very well be fine, based on history. Don't really care if he strikes out a lot if he gets on base at a good clip (though without a high BABIP the two don't go together well).
  12. The estimated arrival time for Miguel Sano, Alex Meyer, Trevor May, and Byron Buxton might not be until 2014, 2015 or 2016. IMHO: No chance to see Sano or Buxton in 2014 unless a rash of injuries forces Sano up. Absolutely no Buxton before September, 2015. With Gibson & Hicks in AAA the Twins could give Joe Benson, Sam Deduno, Cole De Vries, etc., a final chance to show what they have before giving the position to the heir apparent. I'd start them both in Rochester. I'm guessing Ryan thinks so, too.
  13. USAFChief - you kind of stop the comments when you answer all the questions in the first post. Think about the rest of us. Thank you P.S. Mave - I wouldn't make too much out of Benson leading off a ST game. He's fast, but I don't expect his OBP to push him to leadoff.
  14. That's exactly what I thought when I read that. I agree. (alas, no LIKE button)
  15. Finally, Sunday I get to finish that last chapter of War and Peace.
  16. Still don't understand why Florimon is at SS instead of Escobar. I would gladly read a response from someone who could explain this to me. Thank you
  17. If he can get to AA this year that would be splendid. Hitting well in low A ball does not insure future success, but it sounds like he has great potential. There just aren't that many good hitters at 2B. It would be fun to see the Twins have one again.
  18. Completely agree. Why does Florimon get a free pass onto the 25-man roster? His minor league numbers aren't that much better than Escobar's. I'd rather have Escobar as the starting SS. If we are getting very little offense from the SS position why not go with the better glove? He's only 24 years old. His hitting could get a little better.
  19. The calculations to arrive at WAR are sure to be refined over time, but I think it has clear value. It appears that MI is an ongoing issue for all MLB teams. An excellent fielding SS who can hit well is sadly rare. I suppose it's helpful to know the Twins aren't the only team struggling at MI. Gagne was special. A guy you could really count on. And some of us remember Zoilo Versalles. He was fun to watch.
  20. Interesting. If Kelly likes him then maybe Gardy might even think he's adequate. If he hits, even the fans will like him. It's mostly about hitting for the fans. Of course, that helps win ballgames.
  21. No chance he signs with the Twins. The Indians have their first draft pick protected and signed someone (??) so they lost their second round pick. If they sign Lohse they have to surrender a draft pick, but it would be their third round pick. I'd say the Indians are the most likely spot for him. Of course, Boras may talk someone into throwing lots of money at him. He often does that.
  22. In 2011 Dozier had an OPS of .885 in AA. I'm not worried about Rosario being blocked. I said he'll run over anyone in his way. Since Dozier is already a throw-away to you, my brother, who have you got with better numbers to play SS?
  23. Jim Merritt? That rattled my memory. I liked Dave Boswell, too, but mostly because he got in a fight with Billy Martin when Martin was our manager. Fun list. Reminds us how dominate Liriano could be when he was 'on'. Remember? That one game each month? (the 2005, 2006 numbers don't hurt his average - 12.5/9, 10.7/9)
  24. Great article, great comments. I more highly value a guy closer to the big league level than players in lower levels. That said, I would take Arcia. He has nothing left to prove in AA. High average, real power, everyday player. Has the arm to play LF or RF. He's young and will be with the Twins for a long time. He's my pick.
  25. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I did not see that segment. I also believe you're correct to map that onto the Twins pitching staff. Makes me think (ouch).
