Article: Twins Being Overwhelmed By Underperformance
jokin replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Actually, just based on the general TD consensus, I don't think it's ever been closer. -
If Berrios wasn't pitching tomorrow night, the only really intriguing things going on the whole organization would be Gonsalves and Meyer pitching and Buxton in the field.

Don't see Paulie getting booted out of the country club just yet, just not Terry Ryan's MO.... although Molitor was looking pretty forlorn this weekend. A lot tends to be forgiven or forgotten if you win a few series in front of your hometown fans. -
I would think if anyone is deserving of the "go slow", step-by-step approach on the MIracle staff, it would be both Stewart and Jay. In terms of demonstrating dominating-type success, their experiences are fewer and more fleeting than Gonsalves and Jorge.

I don't know enough about Jorge's stuff. But the stat that stands out to me is the K/BB... 29/4. This stunning improvement over his career norms seems to be independent of the FSL rep as a "pitcher's league." This doesn't seem to be a mirage. Is he in the process of making the big move forward in his career that sets him on a fast track to the majors?

Nothing against him. I'm just saying he had every chance and then some to stick with the Twins. A change of scenery sometimes is the best solution. Unfortunately, by comparison and in the case of JR Murphy, so far it's been the worst possible solution. The good news is that, on paper, Murphy is 3.5 years younger, definitely the better catcher and at least as good, if not superior at the plate (OPS+ of 74 vs. Hermann's OPS+ of 49).- 11 replies

He actually hit 2 HRs today. Major Beast Mode. Still not a very good catcher or hitter.- 11 replies

Add possibly add Jorge to the list. And maybe Sam Clay.

Hopefully, and I think likely, the Mastro move is very short-term, and the need for the move has just been exacerbated by Escobar's injury, as D Santana might have to fill in infrequently in the IF. Another good thing about the move is that unlike the other potential call-ups, Mastro doesn't have to play consistently, let alone start. The Twins current OF alignment is challenged defensively (to say the least). If they actually someday soon are leading late in a game, they can sub Mastro into the game in CF. If they're tied or down one, they can PR him. But the best good thing about the move is that when they need a roster space and as Kepler and Buxton become more ready for MLB, they won't have to think twice about DFA'ing him.

If he continues to bat .450/1.372 OPS with equal 13% K/BB rates over Five Weeks, I'd say he's flat out dominating and has successfully reinforced good habits into his approach at the plate. I do agree though, he needs to use his time in AAA to develop more of a situational attitude in his At Bats that can best utilize his speed and overall hit tool- -shortening his swing when appropriate to assure more contact- which leads to more leg hits, -more willingness to work the count for walks and better pitches to swing at in more favorable counts, -bunting, -hitting the outside pitch, especially with 2 strikes, to right.

He's the lowest-ranked in Twins' prospect terms among the "Big Five" Miracle SPs. Jay, Stewart and Gonsalves are the high ceiling guys who have- or will soon- dot various MLB Top 100 lists. But, Jorge currently does have the best ERA/FIP of the bunch, so far (1.38/2.30- good for 2nd best in the FSL to Top 100 Rays' prospect, Brent Honeywell) and is far superior to his peers in K/BB% ratio (20.5%- which is also 2nd best overall in the FSL- with Honeywell also rated #1). It really appears that the friendly SP competition in Ft Myers is constantly challenging these guys to aspiring to better and more better performances. A very bright spot in an organization that currently needs all the good news it can get.

Buxton continues his hot May, reaching 3 times in 6 PAs, HR/Single/BB, and best of all, no Ks. Hitting line in May over 5 games and 23 PAs: .450/.522/850/(1.372) 3 BB/3K 9/20 4 more weeks or so worth of something anywhereclose to this sort of production and K-rate and it would be just about automatic for a call-back.

Oh No.... what ever will DickNBert do for the daily Ray of Hope segment? -
How about pattern recognition? Buxton pattern has been initial struggles, both at each successive level, and in the spring as the season begins. Invariably after his first month, and especially into the summer, he demonstrates mastery of a level with a torrid streak of hitting. Hopefully, his current little run here is sustained, the drop in strikeouts the last 3 games is particularly encouraging. Speaking of patterns- People want to see more walks from Buck, and that's understandable, but right now the "book" on Buxton is evidently out- he appears to be attempting to very tenuously read the first pitch or two or three- he usually takes a strike, and swings feebly at a borderline pitch- soooo... the opposing pitching coaches have to be telling their guys to throw him early strikes in the AB and bury him right away, down 0-2 or 1--2. It's difficult for any hitter- short of Joe Mauer- to hit for both high average and high BB rate when you're usually so far behind on the count on practically every plate appearance.

Looking more like Buxton might have flipped the switch on May 1. In the 4 games in May thus far, Buxton has a hitting line of .467/.529/.800/(1.329) with only 3 strikeouts in 17 Plate Appearances. and 7/15.

Article: Minnesota's Misuse of Meyer?
jokin replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Huh? He spent all of 2014 in AAA and dominated, have we completely forgotten that he was perhaps the top SP that year in the IL? Spent a retraining/refining year in AAA last year, probably in the wake of a late-season shoulder injury suffered in 2014. So now we're saying spending a 3rd year in AAA as a starter is the answer? It appears that he's healthy again, he just needs major league experience. WHY, OH WHY should he languish for a good part of a Third Year in AAA with his stuff? There is nothing left to learn at that level. Get him up here the way the Cards have brought up their best prospect arms- ie, in any capacity possible- the Cards understand the concept of a finite amount of bullets in the weapon. -
Article: Give Alex Meyer A Chance To Start
jokin replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If this is what you believe (and I will admit that I too am fond of winning over losing), then you have to be contented with giving heavy playing time to guys who will most certainly not be part of the future, and also not part of the solution to the Twins "winning" dilemma. The sooner they can cut the ties with the pieces that don't fit into the future, the sooner we can all get on with the grooming process with the pieces that do fit into the future. It's hard to know who it is that fits for certain if they aren't here playing. And that will more than likely mean more losses than we'd like- but that's in all likelihood the necessary cure to the dilemma. -
If you search the minor league threads just a little bit, Bob Sacramento covers the EST games on TD and gave Thorpe a fairly decent report in his first outing.

So you don't agree with Chief, then? Er, I'm confused by the multitude of mixed messages here.. -
Jay's likely going to be a work in progress as he transitions, lots of fits and starts (no pun intended, well, maybe a little ) I would bet. Let's revisit after the ASG. I suspect his second half will be better than his first, I also suspect an early shutdown as he no doubt is on strict innings limitations.

And Buxton also drew a welcome walk tonight. I'm going to mark May 1 as a potential day for when Buck might have begun to "flip the switch."*** In the last three games he's reached base 6 times in 11 PAs, with 5 hits. ****May has historically been a good month for Buxton as he's adjusted to a new level, he's OPS'd @ a combined .933 in the month of May the last two seasons... and then his Junes go up from there.

jokin replied to Riverbrian's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wow. You and I have something in common. I too interviewed the Nuge, he was indeed a great interview, and a surprisingly decent chap. He was actually concerned about getting the interview right during the pre-interview- mind you this was at a little 5,000 watt station. We stayed mostly away from politics and discussed other things important to him. But he had no problem taking the trip down memory lane to the days of the Detroit hard rock scene in the late 60s. He actually thanked me for a great interview, and shocked me a few days later when there were two signed LPs sent 2nd day delivery, entirely unsolicited. -
