  1. Fryer is fine with me. Turner probably could already catch well enough for the majors, just not hit, but he also would be fine.
  2. You can never have too much good pitching. If you have way too much good pitching, it becomes a trade chip to be spent on filling other positional player holes in your lineup. Nolasco does not seem to want to be here and I hope he pitches well enough to make that happen. I expect that is why Santana was signed. Having 7 or 8 starting pitchers competing for 5 jobs will be the best the Twins have had in a long time. They still have more on the way. Getting to average starting pitching this year and above average next year is our best hope of having a better record. We should temper that by saying the Central Division is improved on the lower end and a little less good on the upper end(unless Detroit resigns Max). That still will mean the Twins will have to make better strides against the Central to get near to .500 for the year. Hopefully the Twins will be competitive enough to bring in reenforcements at midseason instead of trading veterans for prospects. They will have to be there soon to avoid becoming another Cleveland which now has decent teams and not great attendance, which hampers signing the players you need to get over the top. Even with the improvement the Twins could well have the worst starting pitching in the division this year and will need some of the rookies to step in to get above that level.
  3. Great move for Hughes, still am in favor of trading dozier, but I was looking for starting pitching in return. May not be as necessary now.
  4. Not all Cubans are winners, but most of the last round of position players have been. Think the Twins should go for it, but then what do you do with Sano(if outfield it is almost certain that Arcia would have to be traded if Vargas succeeds at DH. Mauer will be here until 2018 so that is another issue as 1B is not an option. You can never have enough talent and if you have excess you can make good trades to keep the pipeline or weak spots fixed.
  5. Do not know how much of this was a plan, it now has a big downside. 1. Agents will be less likely to play ball with Houston and want close to slot value for their clients. 2. Players will instruct their representatives to tell Houston they do not want to sign with them. (Friends of friends can have a significant impact). This may not affect Houston, but could have an impact on who they are able to draft. Aiken could refuse to sign with Houston or allow Houston to draft him, so in effect the Twins could have the equivalent of the #4 pick for Aiken, if he falls that far. This could also force Houston to use one of their top 5 picks on a college player who would have less leverage. 3. Given a choice of signing with a team the player does not like or going to college or returning for another year, Houston may have to overpay for some of their top 10 draft picks to convince them to sign. Where does this put the Twins. Twins will be in great shape in the first round to get a better player than if Houston had not lost this gamble. Either Aiken or a top high school pick could slide to the Twins at 6, which would not happen if Houston had not gambled and lost.
  6. Does Burdi start the season in Minnesota, if not where does he start the season? What does Rosario need to do to start the season in Minnesota?
  7. We are closer to getting to .500, but our division may be one of the better ones, so it might be difficult this year. I believe it will be more entertaining this year. No one can have too much pitching. This will be different than the last several years for the Twins.
  8. Interesting but reading some earlier articles convinced me that TR has already had the discussion with Pohlad. When it was brought up TR said the Nolasco was not guaranteed a spot in the rotation. This means that Pohlad may already have signed off on eating part of his salary or cutting Nolasco if he does not pitch up to where the Twins feel he should during this year.
  9. Agree with much of the above. Losing Dougie over assignment would be very bad. For his own good he should take either Rochester or Chatanooga if he does not, it will be harder for him to advance in the future. If Jeff Smith leaves the organization to me it would be no big deal.
  10. I feel that TR and the owner had a talk on where the club was going and it came down to the comment last summer by the owner that prospects were just that until they proved themselves at a major league level. The need to reverse or slow the ticket decline made a difference in that the Twins have to play meaningful games later in the season or the season ticket base will go away.
  11. After signing Santana, do not think Dozier will be traded. Would have preferred trading Dozier for a #2 type starter that had stuff with some team control or would accept an extension(Zimmerman of Washington would have been my pick). Will live with this, but selling high when contention is 2-3 years away is a good thing.
  12. This looks like a send a statement move, do not know if this is best, but maybe a starter could be flipped later, this is a good problem to have.
  13. Would probably have added Levi Michael, but he may not be certain enough to be taken. Would hate to lose him to a talent poor club just taking a look and find out Twins were wrong.
  14. Do not even think of this, he is at best a #3 starter, Twins have plenty of those.
  15. Still think we should sell high on Dozier. Have 2 years to see if one of the Twins prospects in middle infield(we have several we be a replacement). Could bring some very good pitching(though not a fit with Cinni which is looking to trade some).
  16. Garcia sounds interesting, take him and stash him for a year. 2015 is probably a throw away year, so adding a possible good left hander could be a bonus.
  17. Would rather see the Twins buy Anderson than spend big money on a new starter who will block the kids coming from the minors. Next year if things go right would be the time to fill holes, not before you know what you have
  18. Do not see Masterson here, we need #1 or #2 type starters, not rotation filler. Do think Oliveros will be here, can see Pelfry, Tonkin is more of a long shot, but could make it. See May being the last starting pitcher, and many more arriving over the next two years. Hicks may or not make it, but could believe the Shafer - Robinson platoon will be serviceable.
  19. Doubt much will happen. Sign a relief pitcher or two, do not see a trade happening unless Terry gets an offer he cannot refuse.
  20. I can see a few reasons for this, not saying this is correct. 1. Molitor wants some clubhouse leadership by a respected player who is vocal. 2. There is a wink, wink handshake agreement with Tori that if he can be traded to a team that has a decent chance for a ring the Twins will do it. 3. If he did not sign with the Twins, it was unlikely he would be able to get his post career coaching(etc) job in the Twins organization.
  21. Twins will have to tender Duensing, too good a record to give away. Hope they can package him for something. Would not cry over it if non tendered. Nunez is a question mark and I could see him non tendered, depends on what the Twins do with some of the marginal players now on the 40 man. If they cut 4-5 of them would not bother me.
  22. I think if Polanco continues, and Santana is able to handle SS this year, Dozier would fetch a good return in the trade market and move Polanco back to second where he has a chance to be better to much better than Dozier
  23. Without anywhere near the Twins farm system, White Sox certainly need to take another line to be competitive. This deal will cost the White Sox most of their upper end farm system, so only time will tell which team took the correct approach.
  24. I found a couple of items interesting. Think this trade was about equal, but Beane has to push boundaries due to his ballpark and payroll concerns. Second item was it is hard to build a very good farm system when you are drafting every year higher than 10. Sort of like the Wild you get good players, but not any franchise players unless you are very lucky or roll the dice everyear by taking injured players or high injury risk players. Beane went all in last year and it did not work out, so this year is to regroup on the fly and hope things roll your way. Trades seem to be way up this year, should be an interesting offseason.
  25. If Sano does not make it at 3rd this would be reasonable. I think the Twins should go for this. If Sano makes it, the cost control would make Plouffe a reasonable trade chip. Given the inflation if anyone turns this down it would be Plouffe, betting he will continue to improve for at least the next two years.
