  1. Prices in prospects are very high for frontline starters, that should be option #2. Do not see all of Twins top players working out to big paydays, of the 6 maybe 3 - 4 if we are so lucky. Then you can use some of the talent to trade the major league players for the cheaper options.
  2. According to MLBtraderumors John Farrell has been fired as the Boston manager. This opens up one very desireable managing job. If the pitching can be fixed this job can become a long term playoff hunt for another world series.
  3. I would lock up Buxton and Sano, Rosario maybe also. Rosario more because if I chose to trade him later, those cheaper option years could be worth a lot to a small market club. I would expect I would want to lock them up for 7 - 8 years(Sano and Buxton), price if somewhere close to reasonable. Might well put some weight clauses into a Sano contract, but just worry that if we do not sign him longterm, he could be the next David Ortiz. Plus after next year we will have plenty of salary room.
  4. My comment was to point out that if you are going to pay $20 million a year for a #3 or #4 starter, why not pay $25 - $30 for a #1 or #2 starter, more like go big or go home.
  5. Gibson will be tendered because of the shortage of starting pitching and his finish. Mejia I hope will be better, but the Twins had better expect to fill 2 starting pitching holes if not 3.
  6. Good luck to him. Hope he is all that he is hired to be. Real young for this type of job. He has a lot of work to do.
  7. Depends on how close the new FO thinks Romero is to being ready. If he feel he will not help until 2019 they will have to bring in help. Just will not want to spend $80 - $100 million for 5 years of a #3 or #4 starter(Cobb or Lynn). If you want to do this go big and spend $25 - $30 million a year for Darvish.
  8. I believe Frankie Viola was let go by the Mets(I could be wrong). Blyleven seems to be able to get results with the Dutch pitching staff, so he would be a good choice, but do not think he will give up the cushy booth. Talent level may not be as good as we were lead to believe, so hope the new FO finds good teachers for the pitching staff.
  9. Liked Allen, maybe not the right fit. Good luck to him.
  10. Not a Gibson fan, but believe he will be here. Do not think we can compete in the starting pitcher market(do you want to shell out $60 - $80 million over 4 years for Lynn or Chatwood). I would more likely take a flyer on Brett Anderson and hope the calvery arrives at midseason or earlier(Gonsalves and Romero). Would only spend major money on an ace type and do not think Twins will win those battles.
  11. I am fine if it is a one year deal, I did not want 3 years, which I thought he would get. This looks like an unfair stopgap, since I do not see the next wave of FA signings and new players until 2019. This also would be the end of the Joe Mauer contract, and Jake Mauer is considered by far the best of the Twins minor league managers. that could be a plan.
  12. I also am looking for an increase in payroll. With us shedding between $45 and $65 million after next year, depending on the health of Hughes and a possible buyout settlement if he does not pitch this year, we should look at adding payroll. My guess, we sign a couple better relievers for 2 - 3 years between $5 - $10 million a year. Maybe take a cheap flyer on a rebound starter(do not see any starters on the list I would think would be bargins(best of lot Lynn, etc will get $15 - $20 million a year), they are not worth it. Brett Anderson would be by best play and when healthy he is good. Outside of that see what we have, use the shuttle and hope by midyear one of Gonsalves or Romero has made it into the rotation. And a few others have taken a step forward.
  13. My problem is you have to give a three year contract(that is the standard) at this time. I just am not sure I want to commit to Paul for 3 years and then have to have Pohlad cut the checks if things go sideways. I feel if there is to be an extension it will be announced today or tomorrow(it may have to wait due to baseball rules), but if there does not seem to be activity in that direction, they are working on a new position for Molitor.
  14. Anderson may have problems getting more than a 1 year contract due to injury concerns.
  15. Not clear on how many starters the Twins will need next year. I could also see signing Brett Anderson on an incentive based contract with a fair base salary. Will need that to get it done.
  16. Do not see spending a lot on pitchers close to 30 who will want 4-5 years at 15-20 million a year. May need to go big, but do not think Twins are in the ballgame. May want to get a young controllable starter from a team who needs a young outfielder, but have not examined other rosters yet. We shall see.
  17. You seem to forget Rogers who did a good job this year, even if he is probably a LOOGY long term
  18. My question is to the FO, is he worth a 3 year contract, if not who do you replace him with? I would guess, if allowed and they had an obvious replacement he will be transformed into a different Twins role. I think he overused his good bullpen and only went with the newbies when his main men where overworked and needed a break. I respect Molitor, just think that maybe there is a different place for him in the organization and let the new FO bring in their own guy. Next level will be much harder to get to(Cleveland is in the way) and need someone who can get us there without a fallback next year.
  19. Cannot see to find the main MLB season thread, but maybe just because I do not venture there.
  20. Would rather shoot for a bounce back, not horribly expensive trade for a pitcher with risk, Matt Harvey anyone.
  21. Very unlikely, not holding my breath.
  22. The Braves GM and his top assistant have been forced to resign over a major league baseball investigation into the teams international signings. John Hart has resumed the role of GM until the position is refilled. It is possible that some of the signings including the top international 16 year old the Braves signed this year might be voided. (Most of this information came from posts on mlbtraderumors). Should the Twins be interested and at what price for Kevin Maitan(he could be an unrestricted FA). John Coppolella and his top assistant Gordon Blakely have been forced out and it is expected some scouts will also be forced out. Stunning is that up to 15 baseball clubs are under investigation for these type of agreements with 13 and 14 year olds. Maybe many clubs paying the price. Baseball is expected to insist on a full international draft after the current CBA expires(2021)
  23. Twins will need to take care of their own, before signing other players. Do not see this happening.
  24. Problem is most of the prospect list is 2019 material, maybe midseason 2018. I would rather make a trade than pay/overpay most of this thin starting pitcher market. Cobb and Lynn will be in the $16 - $20 million a year for 4/5 years. They are #3/#4 type starters. Twins have plenty of prospects that have that potential. Giants are going to pick up Matt Moore's option, so that will not work. We shall see.
  25. Biggest issue with a trade is that you are trading your top 2 closest to the majors pitching prospects to make it happen. Twins need more possible arms, not less. Do not see a lot of hope with what the Twins have now. Only Berrios and Mejia rate to be here 3 years from now. Santana and Gibson are very good at beating lite hitting bad or rebuilding teams, do not have as much confidence on them beating the teams the Twins need to beat. Twins may have to trade Sano, Rosario or Kepler headlining a deal to get a young pitcher already in the bigs with #1 or #2 starting potential to even get the needle to move. With the pitching market what it is now, some GM's might even ask for two of them to make a deal.
