  1. You are close. I would trade Dozier for starting pitching, if the offer is good. Plouffe should be gone, and that would free up another spot(D. Santana or other options). Do not believe Palka should be a bench bat, either play him or have him in Rochester. Youth on the bench usually does not equal good results. Believe the May - Duffey switch could happen, so this was a good catch. Do not think Twins will give Santiago away for free, but with new GM, who knows. New GM scares me, do not think a top flight person will take the job knowing the owner will interfere. That leaves Rob Anotony and other lesser options. Much will be known after the end of the year.
  2. I would also roll the dice on Boshers. I also would try and deal other Twins starting players(Dozier,Grossman, Santigo) for 3. Zach Jones suggested above would be an interesting add. Some also would suggest protecting Wheeler(not me). Twins will need roster and payroll flexability for the 2017 - 2018 offseason to be able to land a front line starter. They will also need to give tryouts to some of the closer starters(Gonsalves) comes to mind. Would either trade Duffey or move to bullpen to give rotation spots to up and coming pitchers before 2018. Problem is that decisions have to be made and Twins seem to not have a clear view of what prospects can offer because of limited major league time before decisions have to be made.
  3. Most of the Twins starting pitching will not be seen until at least the middle of 2017 if not later. You have to figure out who needs to be protected and then who you have to get rid of to make it happen. Those who wanted the front office change, have a problem here. A new GM may well not be established until around the end of the world series and these decisions have to be made shortly thereafter, do trust the current establishment to do it right. Plouffe and Milone are the only two current roster pieces that I feel are surely gone. Suzuki is another spot, but who after that. Easy are Dean and a couple of other pieces, who do not have a big future here. Would not add Wheeler(you have better choices coming(but would try and trade him, with another piece for something better and further away)). Maybe you need to trade some close(lower) prospects to a team with a A+ or A player they are down on that you think is better. Patience is a virtue in this game. See how things play out.
  4. Twins are at 37 or 38 spots I now believe. Plouffe and Milone will not be tendered and then there are Wheeler and Dean, plus Suzuki. Should not be much of an issue to get to low 30's.
  5. Dozier is not going to bring a difference maker in pitching unless you are willing to take the risk of an A ball pitcher or two with very good upside. World has changed and even the top money teams do not trade great prospects for everyday players. I would use 2017 as a ground to see a number of prospect pitchers in the upper levels of the system, including with the Twins. Based on what I saw, I would then consider spending the dollars for a #1 or #2 and maybe both in the 2017 - 2018 winter. Twins have Mauer's contract coming off after the 2018 season so should be able to afford 1 top flight starter if not 2, as most of the Twins onfield roster should be cheaper until 2020 - 2021.
  6. Would not call Santiago a little coming back in return. Do not know how good he can be, but has more upside than Ricky and may be finding himself. Plouffe could well be a non tender in the offseason, so payroll should be a lot lower and money should be there at the end of 2017 to make a big splash in free agency. See if we use it.
  7. I wish Alex Meyer all the best with the Angels. Santiago is young enough to possibly be given a 3 or 4 year deal after next year. Do not know if the Twins will do it, but at the current time he is a 3. That now leaves the Twins with a hopeful 2 and 3 #3s for next year. Not bad and with about 6 more starters coming in 2018 - 2019 Twins should not have rotation issues. Deal could be very good if Santiago puts it all together, or just passable if he does not. We should revisit in 2-3 years, this is not a short term thing.
  8. Great piece. Might as well am high, but also not high on trading Rosario, but it could work out. You can never have too much pitching.
  9. Two reasons for moving the starters. 1. You need to figure out over the next couple of years which younger pitchers will make it, the older ones are blocking and need to be moved. 2. After 2017 season there will be ace types available, money must be available to sign them
  10. Am hoping for a director of baseball operations and a GM under that person, removing them from being under the president. That would let stay for a while until new person became familiar with the organization.
  11. Feel Monitor will have too much say in this. Twins have 2-4 pieces that should bring B- to C+ prospect types and a few others that need to be moved. Salary needs to be cleared so that Twins can be a player in the ace market after 2017. 30 million a year could be spent if total starting rotation is under 35 million first year or two and under 50 the rest of the time. Most of the Twins core is young and cheap, a few expensive players will not break the bank. Test will be to get A and A- level players that can develop into something good, TR was good at that.
  12. Royals are a club that needs Dozier, but does not like spending prospects plus they need pitching more. Some national league clubs are a better bet.
  13. It could just be the old home town factor. Pohlads are big here and could have some influence on coverage. Also the owner of the Star Tribune is Glen Taylor who owns the Wolves. Could be some influence.
  14. I read somewhere that Pohland's daughter and Molitor's daughter had a business together or worked together, that could have been a real factor in this decision. If this is actually the case, it is a big whiff by the reporters at the Star Tribune and the Pioneer Press.
  15. Maybe we need to move Gonsalves to Rochester and put him on the fast track.
  16. To me this looks like Pohlad picked Molitor over TR. That would be a horrible decision. Would not be surprised if TR wanted to fire Molitor and was fired instead.
  17. Nice writeup Seth. I hope the Twins having made this change, go outside the orgainization for the next GM. I also am a believer in things could be much worse if the Twins pick the wrong person, Witness Seatle. Trying to fill the seats while rebuilding is not easy, but hope the Twins move a lot of the veterans and make a few philosophy changes, 1. Sign only possible #1 or #2 starters, with the pitching coming up the ranks Twins have plenty of bodies, only need a top of rotation type to move this along. 2. Pitching wins, keep finding and moving pitchers though the system. 3. Development and fundamentals seem to be an issue, this may need a major overhall of minor league staff or just a change in making sure playing time relates to this area. 4. Hitting seems to be ok, though this is more of a player issue than a coach. 5. Move on from older players, Twins may only be competitive in 2018 at the earliest, trade most of the older over 25 players 6. Have a frank discussion with Joe Mauer to see if he will waive his no trade clause, he may want to go out with a winner and he is almost certainly not part of the next very good Twins club. 7. Continue finding good young players in trades, this was a TR strength, this must be continued. For the next day or two, I am sure RA will be called with sell low offers, hopefully offers will be better closer to the deadline.
  18. Did not expect this, but hoping Twins bring in a new GM quickly. It does not look according to Wolfson, trade deadline decisions were the issue, but to me it could be the same issue as Bill Smith, badly spent owners money. That will always get the owners attention. Expect given next years revenue projection, the Twins will do a major salary dump this year and rebuild with the youth. Hope new GM guesses right on which ones to keep.
  19. Twins have many more starting pitcher prospects in the mid minors than almost any other club. How will they turn out, I do not claim to know, but most of them should be here in 2018. A couple of years later than expected due to injuries but that is life. Except for catcher and Polanco's final position, we seem to have most of the team here as far as position players go. Only thing I want to see work out is to trade some of the higher priced players at this time, spend money in the offseason on a catcher if you feel that is the need(also some bullpen types) and prepare to sign an ace in the 2017 or 2018 offseason. By that time most of Mauer's money will be off the books and most of the young players will not be having big paydays yet, so there is a window there. TR has proven to be able to change, so despite this year being disappointing, timeline has just moved back a bit. If you bring in a new GM, that person might feel they have to change things, and that does not have to be for the better. Now in the off chance that all but one of the younger pitchers fail, that is a different issue, then you are talking about evaluating and drafting talent. That is what you change GM's for.
  20. Zuck has had 1/2 a great season and a great month and a great month and a half. Trade him now if you can get a fair prospect for him. We do not know what will happen next year, it is not likely we will be contenders until 2018 at the earliest. Turner or Garver could be here next year, along with possibly Murphy or you could pay big buck(which Twins should be able to afford given trading 2 pitchers this year, for Ramos or Wieters. Banking on Zuck is not an option.
  21. Most clubs are looking internally at this time. The next week or two is when things start to move, first with clubs that are 4-6 games back in the wild card race. Tampa Bay starters will be addressed first and then clubs will move on to secondary targets. Should be plenty of pitchers needed, so Twins will have a chance to move some. Many of the contending clubs have 1-2 holes in their rotations. Twins also need to see what they have that is close. So if they move 2 starters(even 3), we should be able to see what pitchers on the 40 man roster can be dropped at the end of the year.
  22. Would rather take 2 - 3 Class A types. Twins will have enough issues with the 40 man this fall without adding to it(will take sure things). Not likely to get those so take the lower higher upside players.
  23. With Boston, Texas, SF, LAD, Toronto, Detroit, NYY and other contending clubs out there, this should be a sellers market. The Tampa Bay starters will go first, but Twins should have offers if not multiple offers for Santana, Nolasco, and Gibson. Only Gibson rates to be here and effective in 2018-2019. Take the best offer and sell. Expect the Twins to get a couple of mid-level prospects for Santana, maybe a better lower level prospect and an org filler type. Nolasco should bring more of a lottery ticket type(even if the Twins pick up part of the contract, and I suspect they might have to). If you can move Santana's contract, picking up $5 million of next years Nolasco salary is not a big deal as payroll should be down due to large number of youngsters on the team. Sell high on the assets you have(this includes position players) that will not be in the plans after 2018.
  24. Agree with the five givens(adding Turner). Twins may only have 1 catcher(Murphy) after this year. Granite is the only other add (though Vielma is close). Depends on trades, what the Twins get back, and the number of open spots on the roster. Hope the Twins trade some of the major leaguers to create more spots on this list.
  25. Good news on the promotions. It means that most of the possibilities for the Twins rotation in the next few years are now at AA or at least at A+.
