  1. I agree, it makes too much sense. Given May's back issues, I also have him starting, so that somewhat limits my options. Feel if Santigo or Gibson have good springs, and some of the younger starters look like they should be in Minnesota, that you would trade at least Gibson for some lottery tickets. This will be more true is Dozier is traded. Maybe you package Rosario and 2 of these starters to the Rockies for one of the non Parra outfielders(this would probably be light, but may be a starting point, since at least Gibson seems to fit what the Rockies need).
  2. Nice article Seth. Given the fact that the last 4 years picks are not here yet, is not too surprising. Some of those pitchers, most have had surgery will tell the tale over the next few years. Many will be busts, but that is the nature of the game. Biggest issue I have with the Twins was failure to spend over the international budget, sort of knowing it would be changed in this CBA. Twins need a high impact pitcher or two and I do not yet see that type in the system. We shall see.
  3. St. Louis has a surplus of infielders at this time. Do not see them buying Dozier for prospects. That also is not the St. Louis way. It is more of moving a player a year too early than a year too late. Pittsburg with 2 upper level starters close to the majors might have more of a reason to make a deal, division is very difficult and their window will be closing in the next 2-3 years.
  4. Just would be very careful dealing with the Dodgers, Look how the last two trades with Friedman worked out. Just think we are being offered disposable parts to help the Dodgers out.
  5. Mike you are making the point of trading Dozier without specifying how good a return you want. I feel we need a good return or hang onto Dozier for the time being. I do not think a headliner of a #3 starter is good enough return for a player who has averaged just under 5 WAR for the last 3 years. I do think if the Twins wait or check with more clubs, they will find a better return. They just need to be more creative and I do think this new front office is aware of this. The point on Mauer was that it is not sure he is gone in 2 years, if he is still here it will be at a much lower salary, but you do not force the face of the team out the door(think Killebrew). Neither of us knows how good the young players are, so to say lack of talent is incorrect, though lack of major league talent may be correct at this time. I have been the advocate of better pitching for a few years now and a shutdown bullpen is a cureall for bad starting pitching. That alone could result in the Twins being competitive next year. That is why I would give up the second round draft pick and sign Jansen and by the end of next year the Twins could very well have the shutdown bullpen. That along would make us competitive, and work on the starting pitching over the next 2 years. We will have to see if the current players in the field can take it to the next level. That is for evaluation next year.
  6. I agree on trading Dozier and have for a long time, if the return is good. Not for parts including a #3 starter as a headliner. Do not mind trading Dozier for players further away, but you had better be sure there is a winner or two in that package. Otherwise all you have is churn. I am looking for success over the long term and operating from a midmarket perspective. You cannot keep trading 5 WAR players for A level prospects and succeed in the long run. Sometimes that means sitting on your hands until you get a good deal. Some of your points are valid, though I do not see the Twins forcing Mauer to leave or retire, he may choose that course himself based on the money he if offered to play here. I do agree that a big part of the Twins problem is the lack of international spending and blowing by the budget over the last couple of years. I just feel trading Dozier for the sake of trading him is the wrong course.
  7. I believe the plan is to improve this year and treat last year as the perfect storm. Your line seems to be keep trading players and hope you get a class that comes together at one time. That is a small market strategy, Twins are a mid market team.
  8. It is still hard to sell tickets(corporate and business use type) if you are projecting to lose more than 100 games and be non competitive. That could well be the projection if you trade Dozier for high upside A players or middle of the road AAA players(#3 starters).
  9. You also have to sell tickets for next year and none of those offered parts are likely to help do that. I would rather than package Dozier and another Twins starter or mid level prospect and increase the return to at least a #2 upside prospect starter.
  10. What the Dodgers feel is reasonable is probably a package headlined by Deleon, who be all accounts is a probably #3 starter. Twins need a higher upside package or another player better that Deleon to make this deal. Twins have a number of type 3 starters about 1 - 2 years away, why should we give away our best player for parts.
  11. Would clear a second 40 man roster spot on the Twins, just in case I see two players on the list for rule 5 that I would want to have. We have plenty of dead wood on the 40 man.
  12. I feel what the Twins are seeing now is offers for Doziers of high risk, high upside talent in the A area. That should not be what the Twins are looking at for the headliner of a Dozier deal. Guess prices will come up after the meeting and clubs that need a 2nd baseman will figure out what they want.
  13. Was surprised the White Sox took the Bosox offer if that was what the Nationals truly offered. I would have jumped on the Nats offer if I was selling on Sale.
  14. Young controllable high upside assets. Always a risk, but one smaller market teams have to take. Expect a further teardown of the Royals as most of their players are out of team control after this season.
  15. Landa was not ready. If we lose him so be it He is only one of many relief pitchers in the pipeline and probably not ranked that highly by the new bosses.
  16. Castro Yankee prospect cost 0. Dozier Yankee prospect cost substantial.
  17. Doubt the Yankees would be in, Dozier would be an upgrade, but not a huge one over Castro. Expect some of the teams would be like the Pirates, Royals and a few mid market teams. Dozier's contract is great for those types.
  18. I am guessing more like spring, now clubs want to pay as little as possible, in the spring holes will be seen and price will rise.
  19. Would rather have the Twins spend their money on the bullpen and sign one or two top flight guys. This may be a small helpful signing, but would rather give someone like Kelly Jansen 5/$95-$100 to pitch in critical situations and help the starters and the club by knowing not many games are going to be given away after 5 innings. Also forces opposing manager to make decisions earlier in the game as being down after 5 could usually be end of game.
  20. Only question I have to the move is whether there are other payroll cuts that have to be made. If payroll is to remain where it is then what other moves have to be made, Dozier has to be traded, Santigo non tendered, Santana has to be traded . Would like more background, since sources are saying Twins payroll will not be as much as $100 million and this move puts the Twins over. Jury on the move straight up will depend on improvement of the pitching staff.
  21. I also am concerned with the back issues May has. For that reason, I believe he has to be a starter and only if that fails should he be moved back to the pen.
  22. This is why I sign Kelly Jansen. With the rest of the bullpen types coming, starting pitching is not as important in the short term. Twins by midseason should be able to have a close to 4 inning shutdown bullpen. Ask the Royals, that covers a lot of sins.
  23. Would rather have seen Thorpe kept, as I regard him as the most likely lost, you can always stash a pitcher on a bad ballclub. I do not remember seeing Turner being listed in Seth's top 50, so I am guessing the Twins brass did not see enough progress either. Santana may be one of the utility options if Dozier is traded, so he needed to be kept. Rest where little surprise and were what I felt was the best line.
