  1. What % of him is the racism towards Dominican and Latin players though? Sorry I'm not a fan of excuses for anyone under the age of 85 to be having and saying these things, not in 2015 certainly. Hopefully hunter can change, it certainly is possible if he will have even a slightly open mind. But ultimately that's on him, doesn't effect my life. I learned long ago that athletes aren't the best people to "look up" to. I have some extended relatives who have these outdated and disgusting views as well, I choose to simply not keep in touch with them whenever possible. People shouldn't give passes to this type of behavior due to "oh well this USED to be the norm" times change, time to grow up.

  3. Oh man, Schilling, what a nut! I would think that Hunter would be smarter then Schilling to be honest. Best case scenario is that now that he is away from the game every day perhaps Hunter has some time to meet some gay couples, gay ballplayers and can grow as a person.
  4. Yeah, I can't in good conscience ever root for Peterson directly again (I tossed his jersey and autographed ball he signed for me in college in the trash) I do however still root for the Vikings overall to win, so nothing makes me happier then to see Zach Line getting those touchdowns when the ball is at the one yard line instead of AP. Hunter, I don't agree with him, but whatever, I still had no real qualms rooting for him on the field, I do get a little "miffed" about all the off the field leadership stuff. (calling Latin American players "Fake Blacks" can't have endeared him to many of his latin teammates, and fwiw I play in wood bat league that is at least 50% Dominican players, not many Hunter fans out there among them to be honest. And Hunters overall comments on that topic are some of the most ignorant I have heard)
  5. Arcia also has produced for his other two seasons in the majors as well, it isn't a stretch at all to say it's reasonable to think he can at least duplicate Hunter's numbers this year.
  6. The bible literally sayings NOTHING about Gay marriage
  7. He had a higher OPS then Hunter last season.
  8. Free agency? Hell, we have a guy in Arcia who likely will exceed those numbers Hunter put up (and cost 10 mil less)
  9. Uh, make no mistake about it, it's bigoted plane and simple, and these aren't just "personal views", Hunter went on paid political ads talking about a candidate who among other things vehemently opposed Gay marriage, now one can disagree or agree with him, but since he has very publicly said these thing on multiple platforms it is more than fair for people to bring it up. Deadspin nailed my feelings on it perfectly: http://deadspin.com/torii-hunter-all-time-near-great-centerfielder-retire-1738832310 I liked Hunter as a player, but if I had kids I wouldn't want them looking up to him as a role model, does that make sense?
  10. Great player on the field, great teammate on the field, disappointing human off the field with his countless bigoted acts.
  11. Honestly, he is so good on TV and in any interview, I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up on ESPN, TBS, MLB network or Fox in the next couple years.
  12. Retirement is always a touchy issue at times for once great players (make no doubt about it, Hunter was a great player, not hall of fame great, but one or two thresholds below and will go down as one of the best 10 players or so in this franchises history) But good for him to see the writing on the wall, this year was far from great for him, but he didn't embarrass himself and had a couple nice stretches when the fork wasn't in him I don't mind him being a part of the org moving forward, but to be honest I wouldn't want him in an everyday role just yet. Maybe ease him into it a bit? I don't think you can go from player to every day bench coach in one year. Spring Training coach and some front office/ambassador position for year one, and go from there? Anyways, thanks for the memories Torii you were a big part of bringing the Twins back to respectability the first time around, and you will be put into the Twins HOF sooner rather than later. Jersey retired? Maybe, but that is a debate for another day I suppose.
  13. I'm not sure you need a true "ace" to win, but you need better pitchers than what the Twins have now to win (or a kick ass offense that would make Brad Childress blush)
  14. Nebraska! We have a shot at a 6-6 season now!
  15. Considering that the Twins have now been towards the bottom of the league year in and year out for the better part of two decades in terms of k rate, I would say that org philosophy has an awful lot to do with it. Even moreso when they ship out guys like Liriano and Garza both who had much better k rates then the rest of the staff, and choose to sign guys like Correia.
  16. When was the last instances of the Twins taking a hard thrower in the first couple rounds of a draft? Stewart? Hunt? Anyone else?
  17. For years their strategy was to get "pitch to contact" guys, and continued to developed their pitchers in the org to do the same thing. It was actually quite hard to miss.
  18. Velocity isn't the issue and never has been the issue. The issue has been and has remained the fact that the Twins don't strike anyone out, in the rotation or in the pen. Up until very recently they actually pretty much exclusively looked for guys who could "pitch to contact", now that they are going after strike out pitchers they are already well behind the 8 ball and it will take several years for the minor leagues/org to catch up. How many guys have they passed in high rounds of the drafts over the years because "well he strikes a lot of guys out, but he walks too many" and gone with the Nick Blackburn type clones? The rotation is going to take time to develop/sign/trade for guys with decent K rates, but when it comes to the bullpen there is no excuse to be signing Boyer and Duensing types with their 4.5 k/9 rates.
  19. Yeah I think May should be number 2, Agreed, I think the impact that Sano had on the lineup was more than enough to push him past Rosario for the award. With that said the fact that an argument can be made for Rosario and even May as well shows the good young core this team has moving forward.
  20. 1. I never implied Vargas was Sano or even close, I implied that he could be a "power hitter" due to his numbers in the minors (20-25 HR power) the fact that he is HUGE and the fact that he is only 24 so the power still can come. 2. That is a very interesting way to not blame the Twins for the Ortiz fiasco and to give them a pass, they were the ones who ultimately decided that Ortiz wasn't worth 1.5 million. Also Ortiz still and always had remained a huge pull hitter, just look at his spray charts. Over 80% of his home runs have been "pulled". Look at the defensive shifts against him etc. Perhaps their thinking has evolved over the years, but there is no doubt at the time Ryan and Kelly both hated Ortiz's approach to the plate. (Apparently 38 HR in 715 at bats is a bad way to hit) Anyways, I don't want to hijack this thread into yet another Ortiz discussion, but my point is they should let guys like Arcia "swing hard" I am of the opinion that Arcia can be a 30 HR type guy, with bad defense and a "meh" OBP, but that still brings plenty of value.
  21. Some guys are just pure power hitters, Sano is one of those, Vargas could be too. Trying to change them ends up hurting you ala David Arias
  22. Congrats to Hicks! The more concerning thing to me is Pelfrey who came in second (can't really argue with that) If the Twins hope to take another step forward next year (90 wins), they will need multiple guys "improving" quite a bit next season. Buxton, May, Hughes, Nolasco, Arcia, Rosario, Mauer seem like some potential ones next season.
  23. Good work guys, lots of solid content on a daily basis. Extra bonus thanks to Parker whose anaylsis is second to none. Hopefully next year we can see some playoff baseball.
  24. For the record: I never wanted Gardy fired. I was mostly indifferent to Anderson, but Allen has done a nice job no doubt.
