    Here are 3 pitchers, through June of last year. Gilbert, 26 years old, 5-5, 92 1/3 innings, 93 k's, 12 homeruns, 19 walks, 79 hits, 4.19 era, 3.58 fip. Kirby, 25 years old, 6-7, 94 innings, 79 k's, 10 homeruns, 7 walks, 94 hits, 3.26 era, 3.24 fip Ryan, 27 years old, 8-5, 96 2/3 innings, 105 k's, 13 homeruns 15 walks, 79 hits, 3.44 era, 3.36 fip Healthy Joe Ryan was every bit as good as either of the other two last year through the end of July. IF he is healthy again, I have no reason to think that Ryan is a step below either of them. Ryan is a really good pitcher.

    I guess I don’t see the twins trading Ryan or Ober personally. I certainly like their 2024 more than I like the Mariners young guys just for 2024. I very well could be wrong. I would absolutely have Festa go instead of one of them to Miami, but we will see if something unfolds here :)

    Great point. Pablo would be great to work with whoever they acquire. But a former teammate, that information would be invaluable

    I mean, if it takes Wallner and Julien, I bite that bullet. Or at least the parameters to that. Other pieces could be added on both sides in some ways, but Luzardo's arm talent is ace level. Is Luzardo a good teammate? I haven't heard anything to the contrary, but his ability is high end.

    IF, what Bobby Nightengale quoted, the Twins are pushing for a "high impact arm" to add to the rotation this offseason, I don't know that the players you mentioned fit that description. Possibly Garrett, but I wouldn't immediately put any of them otherwise ahead of Ryan and Ober. Luzardo I would.

His arm talent is undeniable. I'm certain the package would start with Lee or Julien, but he is the type of arm I would move a LOT for. Thoughts?

    I think SWR gets some starts even with another starter. They'll need 9 guys minimum to make starts this year. That's pretty typical across baseball, unless things go wrong, for a season.

    SWR, I think he will get time in the majors, and frankly I like him as a STARTER more than I do Varland or Festa.

    Dan Hayes' article this morning did note that of Polanco, Kepler and Farmer, expect 2 of them to be traded this offseason. My guess is he has been told this. Now I'm just curious who of the 2 he is talking about? I ALMOST think it could be BOTH Kepler and Polanco then, but who knows.

    Thank you for laying it out this way. I do see how it's arguable that Julien is at his peak value right now, which is why I would listen on him too. IF you can get a really good pitcher for him, I also really like your idea of Lee at 3b with Lewis moving to 2b (or at least, keeping Lewis on the infield.)

    This is where I'm at with Keller too. I don't know if they will extend him. They certainly haven't to this point. Maybe they hold off and listen more at this deadline (if an extension can't be made) but I'd be surprised if they don't either extend him, or trade him, before next offseason.

    Rogers would be a worthy gamble, and if you can get him back to his 2021 form you really have something. That said, even that year he threw 141 combined (between minors and majors) innings, and he's not really come close to that in any other year, Coming off of a year where he only threw 27 total innings (in 2023) I'd be hesitant to make him the PRIMARY addition. If they bring in one other pitcher who is coming off a healthy year with him (whatever that looks like) then this sounds good. Also, cromulent. Good word.

    I wouldn’t trade swr in a deal like this. Maybe someone else, but I’m not certain that this is the deal I would shoot for. I appreciate the thought process here though

    I hadn’t heard about this from the Giants. Thank you for pointing it out. And yes, it feels like a lie, and a cynical one at best. How you lay out Zaidi’s views on top of budget spending, it reads like he needed a scapegoat for not getting Ohtani to sign there. I don’t understand at all the purpose of crapping on the city you are from to blame for a player choosing to sign elsewhere. Who is to gain in this scenario? What was the purpose.

    If he is healthy, he certainly will have a chance. Would love to see that as his stuff always was exciting, if erratic. Does he have options left?

    I think this is a product of baseball now, generally. It's difficult to be a starting pitcher AND show that your coach can depend on you to go 3 times through the order IF you are not solid that 3rd time through. IF a starter is capable of handling a lineup a 3rd time through, I'd argue that starter is not "back-end" of a rotation. I mean, how good is it to have a starter pitching the 7th inning when they typically get clobbered a 3rd time through? Sonny Gray comes to mind for me last year; If he didn't have a blow-up inning in the 4th (which FELT typical at times, that his 4th inning was the hardest one for him IF he were to have a bad inning, but I don't have the numbers in front of me) then it felt like he would get into the 6th that game. But Ryan (pre-injury at the end of June) and Pablo (all year) were the two guys who I had trust in handling a lineup a 3rd time through. My hope is that Ober and Paddack and whoever else they acquire also can get to that point, along with Ryan getting back to his pre-injury self. But yeah, if you have a strong/lights out bullpen (which I'd argue the Twins have set themselves up to have in 2024) I'd rather have a really good reliever face a lineup if the starting pitcher that day isn't a playoff level starter, which I also think is the line of, not being trusted a 3rd time through.

    I'll only add, the offseason is kind of a blank slate right? They don't have to clear payroll first before adding now. They could, theoretically, add payroll first and then trade guys after right? Players don't have to be traded to open up salary room. There isn't a set order there. If this were in-season that might be different. But with the offseason, it doesn't HAVE to be one before the other. To me, they are trying to add a pitcher that is a clear upgrade over your Lugo's/Wacha's/middle to back of rotation types.
