  1. The other candidate would be Brooks Raley. The chances of him making it to Minnesota are rather slim, or should be slim. Although, with this management of the roster, you never know..
  2. You know, I know it's not good for him, but at this point go and bring Kepler. At least an outfielder that know how to track a fly ball. And maybe can hit better than Hermann.
  3. Talking about Pino, have you seen what he did in Rochester today? CG shutout, 3 H, 0 BB, 4 SO, 93 pitches, 70 for strikes. Wow!
  4. Not that much afraid of Sanchez of Verlander and Sanchez, but afraid that our starters will wake up the Tigers line up. Well, and afraid of Verlander and Sanchez too.
  5. Is a cardinal sin to bring Perk for a 4 out save?
  6. Only problem now Florimon batting after him..
  7. I remember his fastball being around 91-92 mph. Yesterday, if the radar was accurate, he was reaching 89 mph. For a guy that relays in his change-up, losing those 3 mph could be a serious problem. May be he is hurt?
  8. I tend to agrree with Thrylos in this one, because it is not only Pelffrey, but all of the starters are struggling right now. Having said that, I don't think there will be any move before May in that front.
  9. It sounds like the curse of the Twins opening day starter.
  10. Well, if they didn't, they will after today.
  11. This is a very good point. Extremely short starts (4 innings or less) not only tires more the bullpen, but also exposes the worst part of it. Either the designated long man is overworked, or the worse pitchers in the bullpen have to eat more innings, even in situations where the game is still "close".
  12. One thing the article doesn't address is that time has passed. The Gardy that led the young 2002-2006 teams is not today's Gardy. It happens to all of us. Patience grows thinner. Communication becomes more difficult, etc.The last young team that was relatively successful under Gardenhire was the 2008 team. The 2010 team had a lot more veteran players in it. But probably the most disappointing issue going to next year is that there are no apparent changes in the approach to pitching. And if that doesn't change, we are in for a long 2014.
  13. I would say it depends on the pitching that the Twins get in the offseason. If we get decent pitching either via free agency or trade, then no. If we get again the Jason Marquis of the world, I'd rather see Hendricks than one of those.
  14. With a couple of good free agent pitchers I think the team will improve a lot. I am not talking contender, but at least "not embarrassing". A rotation of Santana, Hughes, Correia, and Gibson, Deduno, Worley, Diamond, etc. competing for the last two spots should be decent. Not top of the line, but decent. And it is very doable. The position players, with Sano and Rosario coming up during the year, should be OK. Hopefully Willingham and Doumit could have better years than 2013, not as good as 2012, but not 2013 disaster either. I think the Tigers are strong now, but will be getting old. The one I actually fear is KC. Their players will be maturing, and they still will have good pitching. Our team will have their really good players starting in 2015, but 2014 has to be better than this.
  15. At this point, all I want is at spring training time, Mauer reporting without any issue. I would leave the position discussion until that time. In the meanwhile, cross your fingers.
  16. 90 feet x 3 = 270 feet, roughly 90 meters. The world record for 100 m is just under 10 seconds (without turns and starting without a bat in your hands. That is pretty impressive. Wow!
  17. I put framing in the same category as working the referees in another sport. Yes, it is a repeatable skill, but I am not sure it is a skill I want games decided on. I am all for automatic calling of balls and strikes, at least in MLB. It is not fair, even for umpires to ask them to do a task well that it is almost impossible for the human eye to do.
  18. Boy, Gardy has put on a lot of weight. I guess #1, #3 and, in some way, #7 were predictable. There is a lot of talent in the minors, but it was not in AAA at the beginning of the year. Arcia being the exception. I hope they don't give up on Hicks, he always was slow to adjust to changes in level, but ended up playing well in the end.
  19. Oh, my! Give a lot of mediocrity like Kubel's over what we have to watch on the field these days. Coming back to the topic, I think Arcia will be fine. He'll learn a little bit more discipline, more patience, and will give some power in the middle of the ine up for years to come.
  20. 2 problems with tanking deliberately: 1) It's immoral, and betrays the purpose of the game. 2) baseball is a team game but it is also an individual game. It is not in the interest on the players to tank and ruin their statistics. Having said that, there is nothing wrong in sitting the regular, more expensive players and giving playing time to the rookies and the question marks. If they lose a couple more games for doing that, then so be it. Besides, I don't expect that this team is going to win many games against the Rays, the Tigers, the A's, anyway.
  21. My thinking too. The twins always come with some statement that is what the casual fans want to hear, not necessarily the whole truth. I will put that statement in the category of "the Twins will be contenders this year".
  22. You give the argument for the opposite response. If an athlete is not prepared for the extra effort, then better not do the extra effort or chances are he is going to get hurt. Probably not on the 110 pitch, but the longer he goes from this point the danger increases. And he was visibly tired at that point, the number of 3 ball counts was increasing, it wasn't only the walk. I gree that the 100 pitch count thing is kind of arbitrary. But if that is what a pitcher is trained to do, then you have to stop it around that number, especially in a debut.
