  1. Plenty of times, TV broadcasters onFSN
  2. The thing is, getting rid of Anderson is getting rid of Gardy, pretty much. I would think that if they are going to go that way, they will wait till the end of the season.
  3. You know you are having a good year when your batting average drops to.317. On the other hand, you know you are not having a good year, when your average improves to .190. On other topic, when will we are going to learn that Cole De Vries is not really healthy? One, two weeks from now? A month?
  4. So, next roster move, DeVries for Pelfrey?
  5. Hey, Hicks's got the average, he's got the strike outs, he's got the walks, all you add is the home runs and you've got an Adam Dunn with speed.
  6. Summarizing; Worley: worse than expected. Pelfrey: considering he is on the way back from TJ surgery, as bad as expected, although improving. Expect a clunker from time to time, though. Diamond: more or less as expected. An ERA about 3 for him is unrealistic. Correia: better than expected. I hope it continues (but it is a hope and a lot of prayer, not a reasoned argument). As for Pedro, I'll say give him one or 2 more starts, while they see if Gibson is consistent. That will give some time to sort out whether it is him or Worley the one to be replaced. Given the state of the bullpen, it will also gie time to sort out whether Gibson will replace a pitcher or a position player in the roster. I wouldn't be surprised if they add Hernandez as an extra bullpen arm when Gibson is added, at least temporarily.
  7. No. Doumit is a terrible catcher. Not little, a big one.
  8. While many of the comments deal with Gardy's behavior, I am more concerned about how Dick Bremer and all the FSN crew were all over Hicks. Generally they don't do that if they are not channeling something said to them by the Twins (Remember Slowey, or the focus on Valencia last year when the whole team was a disaster). I hope they don't end up mishandling a talented player that then either is lost or succeeds somewhere else.
  9. I know that FIP is not an experimental result, but is a coefficient calculated from results of at bats, that, obviously, you can take as results. So, even FIP does not carry an error in itself, it carries the propagated error of the ratio of experimental results. I am not a professional statistician, but I am suspecting that there could be adistribution model that it is appropiate to treat those results of at bats.
  10. Interesting discussion. Related to this and the validity of parameters like BABIP, FIP, etc. Anybody knows if somebody has studied the error and variance in those parameters? For example, I have some scientific background, and in the lab, if you make a measurement, repeat it 3 times and the average is 50, that number is much more reliable if the individual measurements were 50.1, 49.9 and 50.0 than if they were 40, 50 and 60. And there are multiple procedures to calculate standard deviations, significance of differences and so on. I don't know how those analysis could be applied to baseball (for example, to calculate if the FIP of pitcher is 4.0 and of another is 3.7, if that difference is significant). I wonder if anybody has analyzed that.
  11. I am just following Gameday. Is the strike zone as inconsistent as it shows here?
  12. Well, after tonight may be we need two of DeVries, Gibson, Deduno, etc. In the case of Pelfrey, maybe is still the lack of control after surgery. But in the case of Worley, he says he is fine, but you can see from the TV that his pitches are very hittable. Everything is thigh high.
  13. I am glad to see Levi Michael doing well in his return. If he gets going, the gloomy perspective for the middle infield can change quite a bit.
  14. I agree that this could be a good team pretty soon. I don't like to use words like contender because that depends on a lot of things that are not under control. One key is health, especially health of the young pitchers (and of Mauer). A rotation of Meyer, May, Gibson, Diamond and whoever takes the fifth spot doesn't look too bad. As for the infield, if the team looks good, you can always plug a hole with a free agent. By the way, I know it is too early to say, but Escobar is looking better and better.
  15. What a difference it makes when the pitching is not a complete disaster.
  16. I am sure they thought Burnett would clear waivers, but it is not a big loss. He was sent down because other guys were better, and there are plenty of other options.
  17. My hunch is that and the end of April, beggining ofMay Pelfrey is either rehabbing or in AAA (a la Liriano in his first year after TJ), and we have DeVries, Hendricks and Deduno up. Worley is not doing great either, and Correia, well you know.
  18. I have a basic disagreement on the subject that a leader has to be all outgoing, screaming, cheerleading. My best boss in my long years of work was areally quiet, shy guy. But he was a leader by example, and a guy that you knew that when he said something he meant it. That made everybody around him take things seriously, and put a good effort. You can do that being quiet, or being more outgoing. But the emotion show many times is for the cameras and nothing else.
  19. I saw Pedro Hernandez pitching in the game on TV today. Not too bad. I don't think he is going to be with the Twins, but if they need an extra starter, he is an option (and he is lefty)
  20. Hey, Italy is beating Canada. Great chance to make a splash and go to the next round. Now it is getting interesting.
  21. It seems to me that what stringer bell is trying to sayis that, if you keep Duensing stretched to go more than one inning you could use him as a long reliever against a line-up that was prepared to face a righty.
  22. It is a really bad deal for Gardy, but from the institutional point of view, it makes perfect sense. You let the departing manager, take the "give away" season, and bring a new manager for the start of the new era. That is what they did with Tom Kelly as well. When they thought they finally had a team that had a chance, they let Kelly go (well, Kelly retired on his own, but he is not stupid either) and started with a new manager. It is going to be interesting to see what happens at the end of 2013. If Gardy is given a one year extension, then you know the Twins are not going for 2014. If thye start with a new manager in 2014, it is because they think that is the year they can start winning again.
  23. I voted for Diamond not because I think is the best of the five, but because I think he is the least likely of the five to get injured.
  24. No reason. I don't believe in creationism but there's no reason it can't exist alongside evolution because evolution doesn't even try to explain the formation of life, just what happens to it afterward. Unless you're a crazy person and believe the earth to be 6,000 years old, like my brother does. He's an idiot. I can't believe we share genetic code. I agree with both of you that they can co-exist. But I would note that the main evidence for creationism is the Old Testament, and no one seems to know exactly who came up with the concept. The problem in creationism arise from the literal interpretation of the Bible, that insists in seven days. for the Creation. Once you remove that, and take 7 days as seven (and seven in the Biblical sense, as many) as seven periods, there is plenty of room for evolution to fin into the Biblical story. That is why Catholicism, that does not interpret the Bible literally, has no major problems with evolution. But the Churches that take the Bible literally (certain Evangelical Churches, for example) they do. Regarding on how Biochemistry started, there are certain explanations. Under the primitive earth conditions, it is possible to synthesize urea and a few aminoacids from inorganic forms of nitrogen. Once you have nitrogen in organic molecules (like aminoacids, and urea), provided there is some water, it can go from there. Mind that we are talking here of periods of hundred of millions of years. How did we get from baseball to here?
