  1. "Correlation does not connote causation" from Intro to Stats more than 50 years ago and I believe it is still taught that way. We don't know what causes Alcalá to be so inconsistent or more accurately for him to have such inconsistent command, but we do know his results have suffered. The same with his injuries. The manager and coaches that are around him are at times using him on back to back days and for more than one inning as is often done with the last guy in the bullpen, but almost all relievers are tasked with multiple innings or consecutive days at some point the way the game is now played. I don't think mistreatment is keeping Alcalá from being successful. The same for Miranda and Kirilloff who you have also asserted were held back by Twins field staff.
  2. I don't think an outfield of Larnach, Keirsey Jr. and McCusker is ideal. We don't know when Willi Castro will be available and Wallner and Buxton are out for the foreseeable future. If Bader isn't hurting himself long term, having him at less than 100% is better than the alternatives IMHO. Similar situation with France earlier I think. He wasn't 100% and got pressed into duty after the collision between Buck and C4. I don't know if he's 100% yet, but the alternatives are not any better than France at less than 100%.
  3. Tuesday looks like rain all day. I think they'll get games in on Monday and Wednesday. Even though the Twins are banged up, Cleveland isn't going great either. They just got swept in Cincinnati with Emilio Pagán getting saves in all three games. Some measure of revenge for Pagán after what Cleveland did to him in a Twins uniform.
  4. Alcalá has too much service time to be optioned without his consent. If the Twins want him in St. Paul, he would have to be DFA'd.
  5. The injuries are concerning for sure. There is no way to know how long Buxton and Correa will be out and without them the up-the-middle defense takes a big drop, not to mention the two most established hitters. Three guys--Castro, Bader and France--have injuries that seem to be dragging their performance down and Wallner and Keaschall are weeks or months away from playing. The lineup seems to be a house of cards. If most everyone is healthy and hitting up to expectations, it is a good and deep group. Pulling a couple pieces out exposes a lack of depth. Lewis looks infinitely better than he did during the most recent homestand and if a couple guys get back soon, the lineup will look much better. Kody Clemens had a week and for now it looks like he is a regular against right handed pitching. However, having Clemens, Keirsey and Vázquez all in the lineup is asking for trouble. I don't expect great things from Fitzgerald and McCusker, but both are good stories and both have played well in St. Paul. Keirsey and Zebby Matthews are demonstrating that the last step (from AAA to MLB) is the toughest. It's too bad the squad is beat up when facing division rivals in the coming week. The pitching staff is in good shape and the Twins will lean on them to win games. I do hope people show up for the games. It looks like weather for the Cleveland series won't be optimum.
  6. That is the one thing about Pagán that is out of the ordinary. He will keep taking the ball 3-4-5 days in a row.
  7. Nine outs remaining to score three or four. It won't be easy, but it's doable.
  8. Peralta vs. Matthews gives the Brewers the advantage according to the betting line. Nice to be an underdog after 13 straight wins.
  9. The important factor here is keeping high-leverage guys available every day with overuse. The Twins are pretty conservative with reliever usage, avoiding back-to-backs when possible and giving a day off if they go over 20 pitches. Varland has been the most used and he is among the leaders in both games and innings, but he hasn't shown any signs thus far of wearing down. The team has been cautious with Stewart and Topa, guys with extensive injury histories who are older. Doubleheaders and extra-innings really mess with the bullpens, but the Twins haven't had many extra frames and got through a doubleheader a few days ago. While the team has endured plenty of position player injuries, the health of the pitching staff has been excellent and is the main underlying reason for the long winning streak IMHO. All that said, I think "backup closer" might be as accurate as "bridge" for Coulombe and Sands. Griffin Jax's usage has been limited almost exclusively to a setup role in the seventh and eighth innings with no ninth inning save chances. Probably the best news is that the Twins have as many as five guys to be trusted in the late innings to protect small leads. Edit: Well, I've jinxed the team. I see Coulombe was put on the IL.
  10. With two homers today, the Twins for the first time this year have a positive home run differential. 44 homers hit, 43 allowed. Walk differential--130 walks taken, 112 walks issued. Strikeout differential--376 strikeouts by Twins' hitters, 414 strikeouts by Twins' pitchers.
  11. Also, finally some headway in the standings. Yes, Detroit is still up four, but the Twins have moved into second place and are the top wildcard as of now.
  12. Probably the most comfortable win of any in the streak. Took the lead in the first and added on in every inning until the seventh. Not much traffic on the bases for Pablo and he was sharp. A much tougher test tomorrow afternoon. Peralta is a good pitcher and the Twins will be using a rookie.
  13. I know I'm in a minority, but I don't mind Atteberry. Granted, I have mlb.tv so I don't listen to the radio broadcasts that often.
  14. The great streak is going to end some time. I'd hate to see it end after the Twins get a nice lead.
  15. Perkins is good on radio and TV. I think he's good with Atteberry.
  16. Pablo needs a quick fifth if he wants to work deep in this game.
  17. Ryan is a boring interview considering how quirky he seems on the mound.
  18. Wow, everything that can go wrong is going wrong for the Crew.
  19. At this point the OP is accurate, but a six-month major league season has lots of twists and turns. What is conventional wisdom in May is not necessarily the same in September. i do think Falvey has done a good job putting together a major league pitching staff without breaking the bank and it appears there is help available in the minors. Good health on the pitching side has helped. Baltimore hasn’t had good luck this year and it might be a lost season for the Birds.
  20. I think service time and option considerations can factor in when performance is equal, kind of a tiebreaker. I don't think it was a tiebreaker in the current Matthews/Festa decision for a recall.
  21. For the season, the Twins have allowed the fewest runs per game in the American League. While the offense is less than average, it is broadly middle of the pack. That formula nets a winning record.
