  1. Because he seems good at some things. Just not "the vision thing", in the immortal words of the first President Bush.
  2. Yeah. Leadoff sees the starter that one extra time, at his freshest. After that it's as close to a wash as can be. Not that I really get your original point about it being particularly valuable to face the tired out starter. Just that #9 and #1 are more or less the same in that regard, so it's moot.
  3. The leadoff batter comes right after #9, once the game is underway. If the leadoff guy sees the tired out starter, so does #9.
  4. All right, I guessed a little wrong on the motivation of the thread. But (moderator note:) let's keep the personal side out of it toward each other. I already had to remove one post that took it too far. If you disagree with the characterization of under-performance of certain players, rebut or move on, please.
  5. Aside from Duffey, all the moves you listed in bullet items, as having occurred and actually on the 25-man roster, strike me as arranging the role players. Mainstays are what's missing for the most part. The callup today of Buxton qualifies as part of the bigger picture of course.
  6. Will they be just as happy knowing they may have to pitch a spotless game, if Buxton hits like he did before?
  7. Word on the radio at the end of today's game is that Buxton is being recalled, following DSan's hamstring injury.
  8. Yes. But the hope would be that this is due to trying to pace himself for a long outing, and in the bullpen his warmup routine would be different.
  9. Memorial Day Baseball!!!
  10. I never had a bad experience watching a game there. YMMV.
  11. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJXQSBWO5Qc
  12. Centeno throws to second base to allow the runner to be declared out! Is there a term for that kind of play? I don't think I've seen the Twins do it.
  13. Exactly. Now if you had spent the time in Wisconsin...
  14. I would like to be forced to watch an ad. Games in Oakland are blacked out by MLB.tv when I am in northern Nevada. Poor planning on my part.
  15. I see your point, but I also read the thread as more tongue in cheek regarding the superstitious side of the game, moreso than a Scorching Hot Take. Four game winning streak? OMG, don't touch a thing!
  16. So that's why we can expect a pitching prospect to significantly outperform his minor league record, larded as it is with undeserved hits and earned runs, when he reaches the majors? Minor league official scorers operate under the same guidelines as their major league counterparts. So it would be very unlikely that batting average inflation in the minors comes from things handed to the players by the occasional close decision at first base.
  17. I'll cherry-pick just slightly differently, from May 2 to 22, and in those 17 games his BABIP was a ghastly .190. For the season as a whole it's .321. Explanations involving defensive shifts and so forth probably don't account for this much of a difference; sometimes the hits just don't fall in.
  18. I agree, which is why I indicated that an import player might be an outlier. And it's all just averages, which means any individual player might beat the odds. Still, one of the major reversals in baseball thinking in my lifetime is that the average player is not entering his prime when he turns 30, but leaving it. Father time has the final say; that IS part of the human side of baseball. But I'm hopeful in the case of Park and the moderate length and dollar outlay of his particular contract.
  19. I would prefer to learn he was having an illicit affair with .300, but oh well.
  20. All except Chief of course. He's the jackwagon who pulled the pin; it's his duty to fall on it now.
