    If THAT'S the new Moneyball, Ralph Kiner's heirs are going to be kind of miffed at missing out on the royalties. "Home run hitters drive Cadillacs, singles hitters drive Fords," dontcha know.

    Always obvious... in retrospect. But just try prying the gun away from a person's warm living hands via a psychiatric finding and court order, though. A county would have to be prepared for $1M at minimum in legal fees each time they try. Not to mention that to have any effect, you'll end up taking away guns from people who turn out to not be a threat after all - someone who just mouthed off on Facebook for example. Not to mention the potential for criminal mischief against someone the authorities don't like. The people all concerned about Deep State and Teh Eliteses!!1! suddenly think those are fine and dandy if it lets them keep their guns.

    Farting Around In The Snow is just a demonstration sport this Olympics, but could become a medal event some future year.

    The one thing I find in favor of this is that if he sets up for himself a high price for failure - the risk of his bling-flashing being laughed at if his baseball career doesn't pan out - it might be how he motivates himself. Even Ted Williams admitted that fear of failure was a strong motivator.

    Funny how it's not too soon when an immigrant here illegally is accused of killing an NFL player and an Uber driver in a drunken driving crash. Then, it's important to jump right to the one and only solution: "build that wall, yesterday". The difference is that you don't hear many from the left saying "too soon". Indeed they're eager to talk about the issue too.

    I never had much opinion about Shaun White one way or the other, except his being in a sport that doesn't get a lot of respect - but I take my hat off to anyone who gives the best performance when the chips are down, and he did that the other night to take the gold.

    I think I mentioned that I had the pleasure of seeing Breslow a couple of weeks ago at the Boston SABR chapter meeting. He answered my question confirming that during his time with the Twins he found fellow lefty Glen Perkins a kindred spirit in their questioning/analytic approach to the game - he mentioned a shared skepticism of defensive shifts based on lack of evidence that batting average is reduced. (I don't have any independent info on this topic, I'm just relaying what he chose to say to my open-ended question.)

    "See what we're got", in the sense of it being a critical time in the development sequence for certain key players, maybe. In the sense of new guys needing to come up to speed on players they didn't know before being hired, I'd hope they'd be quicker studies than that. (Regarding players, not for FO personnel and scouts and so forth.)
