  1. Wait, you're saying this isn't our shortstop of the future? http://www.philliesnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/WilliansAstudillo2.jpg (From 4 years and, I'm betting, 20 pounds ago.)
  2. "Looks like I picked the wrong year to give up on pennant contention."
  3. Contention for the post-season was already becoming a faint hope. Contention is not possible without the key members of the core starting to contribute. Sano is off the table for that, now. Therefore, we're in Sell mode whenever the contenders come to the market - not quite yet but sometime in the next several weeks. Strap in, it's going to be a bumpy ride from here on.
  4. Pythagoras Park has some strange ground rules.
  5. Robbie Grossman's arm. You can't stop it. You can only hope to contain it.
  6. Fair enough, but putting my moderator's hat on for a moment, let's go easy on this angle. Everyone here is entitled to a view - if posting were limited to baseball insiders it would be a quiet forum. Discuss topics, but not other posters.
  7. Moderator's note: OK, we have a two-fer here. The topics of "racism" and "Luke Heimlich" have both been discussed many times on this site, and both invariably lead to posts that violate site posting standards. If you have something new to say in response to the article, make sure it is stated respectfully and without flame-baiting.
  8. So would opposing batters. Just a hunch.
  9. It looked like a normal swing, so I'm not sure what his prognosis will be for coming back.
  10. Ha ha, those fools! Cleveland fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia," but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go into the second half of the season without Matt Belisle when post-season contention is on the line!"
  11. TD's minor league report of that day also conveyed the news, for those who read that site: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/30214-article-twins-minor-league-report-67-rooker-and-kirilloff-tee-off-on-opponents/
  12. Must have been an unseasonably warm April in Cedar Rapids in 2013. Buxton started out hot as a firecracker. He had hits in his first 6 games, and in 12 out of his first 13. At his 12th game, his BA was .476, and his peripherals contributed to a 1.274 OPS. (For fans of BABIP, you could see the good times wouldn't last, as this was built on a .581 average. ) https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=buxton000byr&type=bgl&year=2013
  13. Yes, and maybe, respectively. He's not yet 20, and his April was markedly worse than his May and (so far) June. He has a chance. In addition, the article lets you get to know a little about the player behind the stats. If that's not your cup of tea, so be it.
  14. I appreciate your willingness to find common ground. As I said, I see it as a form of crowdsourcing. In statistical terms it would be a biased sample, albeit a bias toward people who are willing to put their money where their mouth is. But it also contains a bias against the most knowledgeable baseball people, since those inside the game are forbidden to gamble on it. Published odds are... a starting point for some kinds of discussions, I suppose. They quantify conventional wisdom, for both good and ill. quote: I tried on a more than one occasion to have someone explain in baseball terms how this team is anywhere near the same level as the other playoff teams I don't see this roster as being any closer to the top teams than you do. If they were to nose out Cleveland for the AL Central, they'd be underdogs to whomever they faced, including whichever Wild Card team emerged. However, I do think you undervalue getting a seat at the post-season table. There's direct money for the franchise just by being there, plus the goodwill and other intangibles toward the next season's ticket sales. And the short-series phenomenon allows for occasional unexpected outcomes. For me, and apparently Judd, the choice becomes clear-cut only if we are buried in the Central standings and become sellers; if we're still at the fringes of competing with Cleveland in late July then I don't think the decisions are clear-cut at all - except that nothing would probably make me go all-in to the extent of draining the prospect pipeline in favor of established veterans for a pennant push.
  15. He'll accept. Is that a $17M game of Chicken you want the team to play?
  16. If you're a jerk then so am I for thinking it.
  17. The comments already covered the territory I had come up with*, so my contributions are not needed there. * And then some.
  18. Do you really believe that when you put your money down on any sports proposition at a large casino or sports book, you are going head to head against the house expert in that sport? Or more succinctly, that you are betting against the House? That isn't what's going on at all. Oddsmakers are highly skilled, but not crucially in determining team likelihoods. Their skill is in matching up money on both sides of the line, and taking their sure profit from the juice. (Seems like I just got done making this observation, jokingly, to Chief in yesterday's game thread. ) Crowdsourcing is sometimes an effective way of distilling information, but that's an incidental outcome of the oddsmakers' business, and can go very wrong if taken as a prediction. They're in a business related to arbitrage, and of market-making; I would think someone with your business background would spot that from a mile away. Old Nurse had it right on a macro level.
  19. Thank you for the other article. I find it interesting that two writers on the same day took approximately the same starting point (damage worse than initially thought) and interpreted the surgical information so differently. I hope Castro's outcome is as favorable as yours. Even with Berardino's take, I am not so optimistic. My daughter also had meniscus repair after a skiing mishap, and it's never been quite right since. Perhaps only our resident medical expert, Heezy1323, would have a chance at discerning the differences between your, and her, and Castro's respective surgeries, except he's working without MRI to compare.
  20. Whoever works in a plausible reference to spelunking in a baseball headline will win teh internets.
  21. Slegers' game on June 6 against Indianoplace was so-so at best. He gutted it out into the sixth inning, getting the leadoff batter but unable to retire any of the next three guys; reliever Baxendale then allowed the inherited runner to score, bringing Slegers' earned run total to 4. All told, Aaron gave up 7 hits and 4 walks. Three of the hits were for extra bases: 2 doubles and a homer. He did achieve 4 strikeouts in the game, and pitched clean innings in both the 1st and the 4th. The7-2 loss brings his w-l record to 5-3; his season AAA ERA stands at 3.43.
  22. Ben got his Florida State League career off with a bang, by going 2-for-4 against Dunedin on Saturday night. He drove in two runs with a single in the 8th, after having gotten a base hit also in the 7th.
