  1. Smith left a couple of years ago, and took a job in minor league ball's HQ. https://www.news-press.com/story/sports/2016/12/01/bill-smith-who-spearheaded-hammond-stadium-leaving-minnesota-twins/94755838/ https://calltothepen.com/2017/05/04/interview-former-minnesota-twins-gm-bill-smith/
  2. Well, if they talk frequently, maybe it's a semi-useful or valid insight.
  3. Guess he was too busy to check the standings all season. I mean, I wouldn't fire a manager just because of the standings. But, blindsided?
  4. Any insights to share, beyond the normal "the team decided to go in a different direction"?
  5. I like the accompanying photo. Looks like a painting, say by Vermeer on a bad day, of some 17th century Dutch bureaucrat.
  6. He'd have enough years of service that he could refuse the assignment. What if they put him on waivers, though, and someone claimed him?
  7. My amateur opinion is pretty simply that Buxton's batting eye is subtly damaged by the concussions. I am hoping that a winter of rest is the cure. If it's not, and if Buxton-Cave is in any sense a contested battle, then we have a huge hole in the lineup that the front office will find vexing, because my other amateur opinion is that Cave can't sustain the offense he showed in the majors and his defense is less than sufficient for a major league CF. My "If" statement to which you replied reflects a genuine sense of uncertainty what to expect.
  8. A nice (if lengthy) exposition on just how weasely the judge was in his testimony to the Senate: How We Know Kavanaugh is Lying
  9. This betting site (predictit.org) still has Kavanaugh as better than even-money to be confirmed, but at the moment I visited the page, those odds appeared to be dropping by 9 cents (not yet reflected in the graph?).
  10. If Cave vs Buxton turns out to be a battle, we're already penciled in for an out-of-the-money finish to next season.
  11. The rest of your post focused on Twins players. But what other organizations should the Twins be emulating? Because if you say we're much more conservative, it should be possible to point to several.
  12. I'll let it go, after copying from the press release: "This is a rare time when there are no losers." Having spent significant time in marketing organizations.... I have nothing left to say. Looking forward to making up an excuse to visit JacksoPensacola for a baseball roadtrip some season real soon! And I'm hoping that both organizations look back on this somewhat awkward courtship as leading to a really good and long-lasting relationship.
  13. I seem to have "Jacksonville" in my post, where I meant "Pensacola". Clearly spell-correct was the culprit here!
  14. Moderator's note: This particular part of the exchange has descended into bickering, and if neither side has something new to add, please stop.
  15. I'm curious, from a business standpoint, which prospective partner has the most leverage when it's down to just one MLB team and one MiLB team. I'm not even sure what recourse they each have, if the relationship starts out on an unhappy note - the other 29 teams respectively all have signed contracts for the upcoming season. (Not that I'm predicting unhappiness here, just thinking out loud.) I suppose if Minnesota preferred Jacksonville over Amarillo and Chattanooga, but Jacksonville was kind of hoping for the Padres for whatever reason, then both parties know that Minnesota needs to do a little more to make their new affiliate happy. Heaven help them if they were both each other's third choice.
  16. I especially liked that play where someone looked foolish. Who was it?
  17. Hindsight is indeed a harsh standard, and I'm probably pretty far on the "get the process right and then trust it" spectrum in the first place, but at the end of the day you have to judge by results, and in 2018 more of their moves failed than succeeded, where moving the needle is involved. It plants a shadow of doubt/disappointment about the process, in my mind. Jacob DeGrom? He can't be a free agent until 2021. Did you mean someone else? J.D. Martinez could have taken over the Robbie Grossman role - someone who best profiles as a DH but you let play in the outfield to keep him engaged and/or when need arises. In that light he'd have been a huge upgrade. Yes, it puts more pressure on Sano or others to stay at their defensive positions, since 1B was occupado, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. They kind of tried that with LoMo, and you can call that hindsight, or you can call that not aiming high since he's even more limited defensively than Martinez and didn't have the upside at bat. Those who were on the record wanting Martinez get credit now - not that we particularly encourage score-keeping on the random TD forum discussion.
  18. Sure they are. That's why they have different words for it, "young" and "old". Let's leave out players with no actual hope - I don't support using them except as stopgaps (*cough*Motter*cough*). Players are always modifying their game, but the bad old veteran has very little room for actual improvement because his physical gifts are eroding, while the bad young player has a chance to work through the cause of the badness and maybe find that one last tweak that lets him be a productive contributor the next year. Also, (Moderator Note:) please leave out the condescending "for you" to the other poster.
  19. They'll find an opportunity every now and then, and possibly he won't have to travel far to come.
  20. Shoulda put a smiley face on my comment. Not my intent to launch a Realmuto digression - just a sad sidenote on Miami's sorry situation.
  21. Does Miami have any other players in their prime they'd like to trade away? How about a catcher maybe? Good observation. One might be able to catch some favorable odds at your favorite sports book.
  22. They hold him as emotional a Going Away party as you'll ever see, and he's still waiting to hear back from HR as to whether he's accrued enough hours to satisfy Social Security yet? Oh, I don't think so.
  23. I expect congressman Steve King thinks the Hillary meme he passed along is just as funny. Libruls don't have senses of humor, dontcha'know. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/steve-king-christine-blasey-ford_us_5bae88ece4b0343b3dc01925
  24. Let's wait a few days and see how his retirement "decision" plays out. I don't understand his motivation, exactly, but it appears that at some level Joe didn't want to explicitly distract from the various other final-game festivities that happen every season, and resolved not to state the obvious. The lengthy taps to his heart and so forth kind of work against that, but it's still what makes sense to me. If Joe were really undecided about retiring, to say nothing of actively wanting to continue, his reaction to being asked to play catcher for one pitch would not have been tears of joy, I am pretty certain. He would have been angry, and probably would have balked, over what would be a condescending move by Molitor and whoever else had a hand in it. No. He's done, and he's told them as directly as he felt he needs to. Whatever way he came to that decision, it's been made.
