  1. ... or, we keep hammering at the rock pile and finally break through to the valuable ore.
  2. He had a couple of very good September games in a row, but lacked a signature third one that our guy Martin has given us. It's true, that September (actually very late August also) was Ricky's high-water mark as a Twin. Good times.
  3. Hated it, back in the day. But now when I see it, it reminds me of home.
  4. Detroit starter Tyson Ross is in his 10th season. He has amassed a grand total of 6.0 Wins Above Replacement. That looked weird. Since the Expansion Era started in 1961, he is #78 out of 748 in fewest WAR, for pitchers with at least 899 innings pitched (yesssss, I cherry-picked by using his lifetime total). OK, so if I don't cherry-pick quite so obviously, and limit the search to 890-910 innings, if his career ended today he would be right in the middle group of 31 such players, at #15. Never mind. I still think he's been lucky to keep a career going with such relative lack of success. But, among those who get this far, this is about what it looks like, I guess. I love baseball-reference.com. So many times I wonder something, but now I sometimes stop and realize, hey, that could be looked up. This one didn't lead anywhere, but I still thought I'd share.
  5. Our BABIP is taking a dive, despite solid contact these first two batters.
  6. Disappointing throw from Kepler after playing the ball well, off of the wall. It might have been tough to prevent the double, but a three-bouncer sealed it. Buxton tracks hard hit balls extremely well. I was bothered by his catching his right ankle in the fence padding, but he untangled without drama this time. Every encounter with a fence remains an adventure. But, bottom line, he saved a run and not every CFer would have.
  7. I had neeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww idea. Fifth year with the team. Player/coach, part-owner, groundskeeper, and beer vendor?
  8. "That's three good games in a row, Martín. Why the long face?"
  9. Still waiting for Ricky Nolasco's 3-game hot streak with the Twins, on a par with Perez's.
  10. Sanó has a minor league option remaining, if they choose to use it in the way puckstopper1 suggested.
  11. It was obviously doctored - I could see that a few of the pixels were out of place. Moreover, both of the actors purported to be Abbott and Costello had plenty of screen time, and yet "I'm not ASKING you who's on second" was never uttered once. Clearly a fake.
  12. I'm sure there's a good explanation behind this photo at a school in Palmdale CA. There always is.
  13. I think if luke had included the word "then," as in "slumps and then sulks," the intent would have been clearer. At least, that is how I took it on first reading.
  14. You're saying that when he's not throwing a clunker, he's good/solid, not electric (or other superlative)? That's pretty faint praise, if so.
  15. "Aw, ya shouldn't oughta have gone and called me inconsistent, Skip." I didn't recall anything about him wearing out his welcome in Houston, but it's remarkable what Google sometimes turns up when you search a player's name and include "clubhouse cancer" in the string. Hard pass, I think.
  16. It needs to go, then. "We Have Tickets"??? That seems like a minimum level of competence expected when running a team. Did they hire RandBall's Stu as their ad agency, using Falvey's middle-school nephew to do the graphics?
  17. Is getting demoted to AAA after another bad outing, and then getting traded, a valid way to evaluate consistency?
  18. I don't own an Internet device, so I was unable to read this article. It probably sucked, anyway. Usenet was so much better.
  19. Baseball has long been considered a statistician's delight. And yet, the traditional stats are really simple, either counting stats, or else simple means like batting average and ERA. One further step would be to compute variance for things, for instance to get a handle on consistency, and yet I don't know of any popular stats based on variance. (There are some difficulties in trying to construct one.) The following non-baseball graph from Wikipedia illustrates a way two players could have similar batting averages or ERA and yet deliver very different results to the team. So, with that as preface, compare Nelson Cruz's hit-counts games in 2019 to Byron Buxton's (3 PA minimum), starting with the observation that their batting averages aren't very far apart: BA ... 0-hits ... 1-hit ... 2-hits ... 3-hits ... 4-hits .277 ..... 13 ........ 5 ........ 6 ......... 3 ......... 1 ........ Cruz .255 ...... 9 ........17 ........ 5 ......... 0 ......... 0 ........ Buxton This spread of data looks kind of like the above graph, if you squint hard enough. I don't have the database chops* to automate any kind of a good study, but doing this one by hand suggests there could be information to be learned. What that information is worth, I don't know. If it was validated beyond small sample size, would you prefer a more "steady" player, or one more prone to offensive outbursts in between long snoozes? Probably the answer depends on a lot of additional factors. * Nor table-formatting, apparently ** I left out pinch-hitting, since 0-1 or 1-1 makes the concept of "variance" a bit harder than I'm willing to tackle
  20. I came into this season expecting bupkis from Castro due to the knee surgery, and am happy to have been proven wrong. The guy has to have a ton of character, to achieve this. (Uh, erm, not that I was doubting his character, during the offseason. Just that I didn't think it would be enough.)
