  1. I'm in the Eastern time zone so I am already 31 minutes in. And now I have good reason to.
  2. If you've seen the look on his face when the manager comes out to get him, you'd know Odo's ready response to that one. It would be similar to that one line from Ghostbusters, "everything was fine with our system until..." / just like any starting pitcher worth having on the team, of course.
  3. Perez would be my guess in that eventuality.
  4. He was shut down for a month, then has been back for 4 games.
  5. You have to be more specific, which sport.
  6. From the MLBTR article: "The Minnesota org scooped him up for a $1.8MM guarantee. There were a series of roster bonuses that kicked off beginning 130 days into the season, a point less than two weeks away. While the Twins won’t owe any of the extra contemplated cash, they’ll be on the hook for the remainder of the salary..." Fair to assume the writer's primary source was somebody on the beancounting side of the Twins front office. Because being on the hook for what I'm estimating to be $688,888.89 is not a phrase the fan on the street would probably have come up with in regards to a major league budget. Nor should it have anything to do with anything. It's a cost of doing business. It's noise in the system, lint in the filter.
  7. That's fair and I don't think anybody would disagree with the discretion you are suggesting, but I think you are overestimating the secrecy and bluffing that is possible. This isn't poker or an auction or anything similar.
  8. ... who flip him to the Texas AirHogs (15-45 at this writing) for cash considerations. Saints are in first place and can't monkey around.
  9. "Area Man So Distraught By Loss To Yankees That He Openly Solicits Satire Involving Norse Mythology' There ya go, Stu, I've done half your work for ya already.
  10. Shhhh! Don't give RandBall's Stu ideas!
  11. Each trade target probably represents unique negotiations, but yes, I am thinking mostly in regards to a good reliever, where normally two middling prospects are enough and I'm saying don't be afraid to look silly by offering three. Or if going after a starter, begin with Larnach and then add guys lower-down and further-out, more and more until you get the other GM to kind of blink a little bit. Maybe that can't work, but except for a deGrom level of pitcher I have to think there's a chance. I don't advocate stripping the farm system bare. But if culling is going to be necessary later anyway, make your assessments now and do it with purpose. They do have another draft coming up next June, I'm told
  12. It was surprisingly late in my career that a boss pointed out to me the important distinction between efficiency and effectiveness. Efficiency is needed and necessary and probably most of the time is the rule to follow. But once in a while, you have to tilt toward effectiveness. The overpay should be in terms of quantity. I know that rival GMs don't want 2-for-1 trades, although that was my lasting memory of Terry Ryan's style when he sold desired pieces in deadline deals and we've seen some during this regime too. So, make them 5-for-1 trades. We have 40-man issues looming for the next several off-seasons, if our prospects are as good as we keep telling ourselves. So, these assets will not all get used by the Twins anyway, like over-ripe tomatos falling off the vine, except when that happens they don't even re-fertilize the soil. So, get something for them now, even if it looks like an overpay via some trade-value calculator - it's a false economy to hoard all these mid-level prospects that we keep accepting in return for our trade chips in years past. This hasn't been my stance during the past several years. The window wasn't open, and it would have been a mistake IMO to have tried to pry it open prematurely. Now, however, it's time.
  13. "Don't expect much."
  14. Yes. What's your point?
  15. "Here's Trevor Larnach. You're a seller."
  16. Yeah, check the standings. After starting 19-31, Washington now leads the wild card race, and is hardly out of the picture to take the division outright. To get Scherzer, we'd have to include Brian Duensing as a sweetener, and we don't have him anymore!
  17. Yep. Don't misunderstand, I'm not calling anyone stupid. But when something like this happens to me, it's called the Stupidity Tax. It happens to everyone now and then. I pay it and move on. Said another way: they made some decisions in the off-season. Those didn't all work out. Make some new decisions.
  18. While I don't agree with every word of Chief's manifesto, the gist is totally right. False economy and half measures will not do, and the time for action was yesterday, not tomorrow.
  19. Moderator's Note: Folks. I see Carole's suggestion to our guest to tone it down. But please, be good hosts too. We've had trolls from other teams before, and dealt with them. Our friend here isn't in that category, IMO, and the moderators will huddle to make sure we're all on the same page with this. But, the site's Comment Policy is specific about being good hosts when visitors stop by. If you have issues, bring them to the attention of the moderators, via the Report button or by a PM, and not by bickering in the thread. Thanks.
  20. Rule book doesn't provide that option, when the starter goes 5.
