  1. I just logged in, and saw the game situation, and thought to myself, we'll see if Sano can bring himself to take 4, because they aren't going to give him 1 to hit. Test: passed. Good for him. Now bring them in, Marwin. / edit - Test: failed
  2. I was a misunderstood child. I stated as clearly as possible, "steak and tequila." They gave me strained peas and Similac.
  3. This article will look brilliant, when and if our front office does go big.
  4. Angels have had poor (indeed tragic) luck with their pitching acquisitions. Perhaps Mejia will help them. Good luck to him, just not when we face him.
  5. It's worse than I realized: Marked Man starts with a pair of M's itself.
  6. It's a fair question, and I'll offer my snap opinion (as only a moderator, not an owner or featured writer) - others might chime in too. The removal of the tweet was almost certainly a PR decision. The removal of discussion here would be an editorial decision. TD is independent of the Twins and is not responsible for the team's PR. Not symmetric situations. / edit - I should add, again with my moderator's hat on, that this thread obviously will bear heavy scrutiny for respectful posting without trolling.
  7. I'll let you know when Dave St Peter reaches out to the TD moderator team for similar action.
  8. Or, they decide that that IS the price of urgency. Sometimes, I comparison-shop the hell out of a product. Other times, I pay full retail at the most expensive shop that happens to be right around the corner, because I want a bandaid for the knee I just scraped when I unexpectedly tripped during my walk downtown, and the cost of waiting would affect me some other way than the direct cost. I'm not saying to trade Royce Lewis for a bullpen rental arm. But there is such a thing as false economy. I've been a stay the course, conserve the assets, guy for years. This is not the year.
  9. One hears about a manager "losing the clubhouse." I don't recall a FO discussed in similar terms. But if asked, as a seasoned General Manager over many, many seasons*, I would advise FalVine to be careful about this. * playing Out Of The Park.
  10. It's a conversation starter.
  11. The CF he plays alongside, Ramon Laureano, is ranked very low (a fine play against us the other night notwithstanding). That could still be a flaw in the methodology, even though I know they try to correct for this obvious interaction among fielders. Grossman in his years with us was paired with pretty capable centerfielders.
  12. Yeah, I thought that was an eye-opener too. I don't know what the "points" actually translate to*, but they have Mitch a bit above-average, in whatever it is they measure for catchers, and Jason a bit below-average. I actually think this may be reasonable, if you compare to the catchers on other teams close to them in the rankings (e.g. the Red Sox' two guys). But then I'm not really the biggest woofer in the world for Jason Castro's defense overall, so it's not a big leap for me to think Garver is about on a par and perhaps even a little better by now. I know that Garver still has his detractors, and there is just about one D'oh moment for him every game. But catcher's a demanding position, and a true clown back there would be pretty unbearable, and Garver is beyond that modest hurdle. * Actually I think I do know that it's a mishmash of numbers, somewhat like OPS is, making it "just a number", though I think it's trying to look on a par with "wins".
  13. Look at 2018 and 2017 too. You won't be disappointed.
  14. Woah. Tim Melville, Darin Mastroianni, Tommy Milone... the list literally goes on, the further back you go. It's a long-term pattern with this team, perhaps spanning decades! Further research is called for. How did we miss this pattern? The signs were all there! Trevor May is indeed a marked man.
  15. Concur. When the window is open, as I believe it is, the road is not going to be smooth and even. There will be lumps and bumps, and those are not evidence by themselves of no window.* That said, I don't view this as probably 1987 again, quite yet. More like 1984 - we may look back someday and say that this team wasn't ready yet, but later on was. But, that's not to claim I have a crystal ball. No two rebuilds are alike. You compete, when you might have the horses. We've got equestrians, of some species TBD. Let's go, FalVine, this is the core that's going to win or lose, show us what you've got, while the players do likewise. * Heck of a mixed metaphor, eh?
  16. You already did the leg work here, so let me ask: What are the analogous numbers for low-leverage and other situations? Are they now just not hitting well, period?
  17. Indeed. Jake toed the line just short of insubordination, which I think is just fine in any athlete who lives to compete. Leave me in, Coach, I'm ready to play!
  18. They didn't DFA him, last year.
  19. Covering the tip, next time they have dinner together. / edit - and, just to kill the joke by explaining it, the intended subtext is "this is a really small transaction", not "teh Pohladzes are teh cheap."
  20. I don't think that's a hawt taek, at all. Perhaps any move made will be even more tilted toward long-term controllable talent, and no rentals for a 2019 push at all. Or, if the FO is really pessimistic, only rentals, at minimal prospect cost. I think I can reverse-engineer any deadline outcome, after the fact.
  21. This has been true in 2018 (bad year) and 2017 (good year) as well. The only reason we know this, unfortunately, is that he misses so many games! Isn't Auto-correct fun? I agree completely about our SS. I was very skeptical about his arm, and I still cringe when he throws because he looks a little funny, but it's now the case that he passes the eye-test where it comes to making the plays, and he didn't before, and the SDI number bears out what I think I'm seeing, so it's all good!
  22. SABR's mid-season defensive stats are out, and some Twins are looking really good in them. Byron Buxton leads all American Leaguers in the aggregate SABR Defensive Index (SDI) score. Max Kepler isn't too far behind. Right with him, and causing me to eat some crow, Marwin is shining in his efforts at third base. A little further down, Jorge Polanco ranks among the league leaders also. Martin Perez is showing well, among pitchers. The entire listing, both tops by league and also rankings by position, are here: https://sabr.org/sdi/2019-07-07 I'm here this morning to celebrate our guys - or critique them if need be. If you are skeptical of current attempts to quantify defensive contributions, please start your own thread - this is a thread about defense so I'm entitled to be defensive.
