  1. I keep thinking of what should be a list of qualifications, and when I write them down an awful lot of them can be acquired by On the Job Training. For example: a sense of fairness, a willingness to be out front or act decisively when it's called for, an ability to articulate one's reasons, a knack for (the phrase I keep coming back to) taking a punch gracefully when that's called for, the capacity to re-evaluate and even say "I was wrong" when need be. Also: can they help us construct the next list of candidates? That should be Job One. Probably decisiveness is the hardest of these to learn, and it also may be the most difficult to detect with certainty just from reading posts, game thread or otherwise. A complete absence of one of these characteristics becomes visible with time; I think we've weeded them out instinctively, in the candidates discussed. OTOH none of us is perfect in these, and we've probably all improved in them over time. So I think we have a lengthy list in this thread already of candidates who can be good, and who haven't been eliminated by the above traits, and the key becomes more to do a good job integrating whoever we do pick. Which also means we can be arbitrary about who we do pick, among this crop.
  2. Believe me, we are all haunted by this.
  3. Yeah, and how long have they been stuck at 201 now? Over 12 hours, at a minimum? Maybe longer. Something needs to be done.
  4. These names are pretty good, and I'm not good at remembering long posting histories anyway so I doubt I can give Brock an independent 3-name list like he asks. I have a vague recollection of Sconnie being a little thin-skinned at times, perhaps in the presence of "negativity". And an even vaguer recollection of our having to take mod action against bighat in the very early going. I'll try and remember to do some vetting/research in the next day or two, to provide more specifics. How about milldaddy? Brian makes a good point about minor leagues, I guess as a way of gauging commitment to the site. I also like to see how well candidates do in game threads - sometimes you have to "take a punch" there and roll with it, which is IMO a key consideration for being a mod. Maybe I'll take an unwarranted swipe at one during a coming game, something unfair even , and see what they do - although, people do react differently to the mods so that's probably not a fair test.
  5. But all that said, yeah, this dance has a very familiar feel to it, so I probably will sit the next number out.
  6. And Mejia's short-term gain is some other player's short-term loss. The Angels weren't going to run with a 24-man roster. I don't see the net benefit to "the players".
  7. I just noticed, you're so stingy with the explanation points. Why not give four, one for each base? Here ya go, I'll borrow you one. !
  8. Oh no you don't. I'm not falling for that, and trying to understand you on the same day I tried to understand Riverbrian.
  9. No no, I knew all that. I just made the rookie mistake, and tried to understand Riverbrian.
  10. Just joining the game-thread in progress, and I'm REALLY struggling to reverse-engineer where this'un came from. Seems beyond just normal 5-2 lead hijinks. I will study this.
  11. I'll say what I say every time some team claims one of our guys - the rules should be changed to be more like Rule-5, where the new team needs (say for the rest of the season) to offer the player back to the original team first, who can then resume the waiver/DFA process as though the gratuitous claim had never happened. Angels want to stash Mejia at AAA? Hey, so did we. Way too much game-playing going on with these claims.
  12. I took the liberty of moving the two posts over there. Hope that helps.
  13. Cease, and desist, you're saying.
  14. I got international bonus pool space, which I could never use because I had no allowance. I hate you, Grandma! Hate. You.
  15. Always take the pint. Always.
  16. Don't underestimate the effect of special relativity on a moving aircraft. Fastballs get a lot of late movement.
  17. I don't understand why this record is so low. Major league teams have 25-man rosters.
  18. Are they? Do they? If pitching behind in the count, you'd think this would show up in elevated walk totals. Instead, they are 5th of 30 major league teams in fewest walks surrendered. https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2019.shtml You'd think their strikes-thrown would be few. Instead, they rank second in the majors in percentage of strikes. https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2019-pitches-pitching.shtml You'd think their number of instances of being behind in the count would be above league average. Instead, it's below. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=p&team=MIN&year=2019 As the saying goes, we're all entitled to our own opinions, but we're not entitled to our own facts.
  19. Good Cop, Bad Cop. "Oh, I'd love to do this deal, but the big mean owner doesn't want me to. Can't you add another decent pitching prospect, so that I can persuade him?" I get the same kind of spiel at the dealer when I buy a car, regarding the flunky's manager.
  20. I realize it's different posters posting at different times, but... we trade a player away for cash considerations, and people ask why we didn't get a lottery-ticket prospect instead, while when we acquire someone for nothing but money it's evidence of cheapitude or something. I wonder whether Yankees Daily is giving the front office any snark about their acquisition of catcher Brian Navaretto for cash considerations?
  21. The mark of a true professional is to keep the head held high while hanging it in shame. Bit of a contortion act but the great ones do it.
