  1. Moderator's note: While jorgenswest's point in general is well taken, there ought to be separation of the human side of the game from the business decisions a front office makes, and from a site moderation standpoint I think spycake's position represents my view on the phrase most of the time when it comes up, that it's a front office looking for cheap contracts. In any case, please let's not continue this tangent in a thread about a player's signing.
  2. Back in my day, we didn't have Monty Python to keep us entertained, and had to make do with At Last The 1948 Show. Right, and you try and tell that to the young people of today.
  3. Quoted for truth.
  4. Reference probably goes right over the heads of the nice folks in Pensacola. Ought to save that'un for a Cedar Rapids player.
  5. In keeping with part of your theme today:
  6. The baking geniuses I've run across don't measure anything anyway, and you can't get a useful recipe out of them when you ask. It's always "not too thick but not too runny," or "put in enough rum extract that you'll be able to tell, but not so much that the reverend will be offended." None of this scant-one-seventh-of-a-tablespoon nonsense.
  7. The sitcom dad Randy Dobnak had a terrible episode last week; it was really obvious he hadn't memorized his lines and was reading from cue cards. I won't be surprised if the show's cancelled, if he's this bad again.
  8. Do they drop someone from the 40-man, just for a pinch runner for September?
  9. Moderator's note: The article makes this assumption plain: "if the Twins do make the postseason." Let's give the author the courtesy of considering his actual points, as opposed to contradicting the premise. There are plenty of other threads for that.
  10. Capsule review of any Tarantino movie: "I enjoyed it, until a certain point where I didn't enjoy it even a little, then I enjoyed it again. Go see it!"
  11. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood? That was my and Mrs Ash's choice.
  12. Back in my day, they used to print out the Internet, and then send out some low-life with high aspirations to try to sell you a copy for a thousand bucks, calling it an Encyclopedia. Back in my day, Amazon was called Sears, and every few months they would print out a book with some of the deals, and once a year they would print out all of the deals, and send it to you unasked. Back in my day, there was only one phone provider, and they would print out everybody's contact list and send you a copy, whether you knew those people or patronized their businesses or not. Man, we killed a lot of trees, back in my day. Kids today don't know what that felt like.
  13. Google Image Search returns this guess when I gave it the JPG: "Tree" Thanks Mister Google!
  14. You mean a .115 BA for the past several games? I consider that an issue. Facing a tough righty in an important series, you ask your veteran lefty bat to give a little extra. Might backfire, but not completely wrong-headed, to me.
  15. Sorry for your loss. The stages of grief are tough. Denial. Anger. ...
  16. Yeah, "Sugar" was right there in the product name. Sugar Crisp, Sugar Smacks,... Kids today, they don't know how easy they've got it.
  17. If you could promise me that...
  18. So Rob Antony's out of the loop, and is purposely blowing a hole in his own career by bringing up the possibility in public comments?
  19. No, the move itself smacks of desperation. You judge a decision at the time, not after the results come in. Hoping that Kirilloff turns around a month of tepid numbers at AA into good major league numbers would mean our FO is much like a batter who is pressing. Anything can happen, but it doesn't make it a solid move.
  20. This would be a desperation move, more than just an aggressive one.
  21. Relax. Have fun. Oh, and change your entire approach when you go up to the plate. ???? Profit!
  22. Prepare for the same kind of disappointment as with Cave's major league batting. They both have unsustainably high BABip at AAA. The balls stop falling in, the OPS plummets, even before taking into account the higher level of competition. De Aza, in his 30s by now, represents emergency depth only, IMO. That said, he impressed me with a fine running catch in the RF corner, the game that I saw last week in Pawtucket, so it's not like I dislike the guy. If not for 40-man considerations I'd swap Cave and De Aza too. Give me a good show, I'm a fan for life - or at least until the next bonehead play.
