  1. The knocks on Pinto's defense have always been vague and indirect, IMO. This article might be the most specific I've seen, but it still doesn't tell me what I want to know. Game calling: what is it they don't like? "Good relationships with umpires": an intriguing comment, is he setting up an inch too far back, or not crouching quite far enough down, or some other physical thing? Or does he get hot-headed and mutter a curse word at every borderline ball called? Or what? And more generally, is catcher defense such a black art that no one can just come out and say in the interview what is the problem? The "book" on individual pitchers and hitters is sufficiently well known that players and coaches alike can talk about their strengths and weaknesses without giving away the really sensitive stuff. Why don't I feel the same openness about "inside baseball" when it comes to catching?
  2. He only out-hit Florimon by 4 points (.225 versus .221) and had only one more RBI (45 to 44). Not worth the defensive downgrade. No, I'm kidding. He looks like he'll hit, and those aren't the stats I'd look at anyway, and then there's the age difference. But there do seem to be questions about his defense at SS, and I'm sure the Mariners are hoping for a lot more than the out-of-options fifth-starter types that we'd like to trade away. Since there's no current need for a 2B replacement, I don't see a fit here.
  3. Whew, Suzuki in the second spot. It's just a spring lineup, but that's an indictment of the three guys batting 7-8-9, all of whom have skillsets suggesting leadoff or second but none of whom have as yet forced their way up there their based on performance. Mastro's my adopt-a-prospect guy from a couple seasons ago so I'll forever root for him but I'm losing hope at this point; Escobear is the one who has a chance.
  4. The player Eduardo Escobar wants to be when he grows up:
  5. If he's comin' down the baseline, I ain't blockin' no plate.
  6. Coming up to bat five times, and hopefully being on base twice, should leave him three hours or so to sit next to Steiny.
  7. I didn't even like seeing him lean on the arm during his video.
  8. Mauer may want to pick his brain.
  9. So NOW we know who was really pulling the strings on the Doumit trade.
  10. Did a quick check of the 2013 pitching staff, before finishing reading what had already been posted, and not only is the philosophy in strong evidence, it goes pretty far back: Adam Wainwright spent his age-24 season exclusively in relief, after having done essentially nothing but start while in the minors. The next season they took the training wheels off and he's been a starter ever since. More of a Bill Clinton joke, I believe. Think: "beret".
  11. It's probably hard to tweak the CBA between the major negotiations, but the QO has had enough unintended consequences that I expect a tweak will happen.
  12. Just from listening, and not having seen one instant of the show, I'm guessing Tarantino would be a fan.
  13. Moderator's note: This kind of personal bickering has reached a level where it needs to stop.
  14. Or, Gardy/Andy need 12 days rest between his starts?
  15. Looks like we're going to have to suffer through a season with a stone-glove at first base?
  16. That chicken and egg question is a good one. The slash lines for first pitch strikes could be skewed by the willingness of the guys with elite arms to not nibble, for instance; that by itself does not prove a direct link saying a guy with a lesser arm will necessarily do better by throwing more strikes, beyond a certain bare threshold of course.
  17. Skipping a birthday this year, but still having cake?
  18. Albert Pujols's name has come up in this context, dating back many seasons apparently.
  19. That threshold seems a little low. If you reverse the scenario and have Gibson go north with the team, and suppose he puts up a 5+ ERA "in May" (early? late?), sending him down to AAA might seem premature, depending on fundamental factors and if he's showing signs of being able to improve. So I wouldn't fault a team for sticking with a veteran in that circumstance either. Pitchers have bad months or two and still turn the season around, if the hole they've dug isn't too deep. If they had a Jason Marquis situation with an 8+ ERA after 7 starts and didn't drop him (as they did in 2012) to give someone like Gibson a chance, that would be damning. They also did let Blackburn run up a 7+ ERA that season, in even more starts, and that would be even more damning in this situation now to keep Gibson down if he's performing.
  20. I must have told you my Eddie Guano story, right?
  21. "Mother Machree?"
  22. The only Minnesota Twin player, of 3 years' tenure or longer, NEVER to be the answer to a trivia question!
  23. Did he finally retire from broadcasting on WCCO?
  24. If the dyslexia is bad enough, everything sǝɯʎɥɹ.
