  1. As of right now, the only loss I will want back is the next one (hopefully the Twins can win out and take a playoff spot).
  2. Trevor May is not being mentioned much in this thread, but I think his move to the bullpen is both a positive and a negative. Positive of course because he's been one of the best options for Molitor to use in the second half, and he actually strikes guys out and has a pretty solid and consistent record out of the pen. However, if the Twins had added another reliever via trade, May could have stayed in the rotation, and maybe he'd be taking Pelfrey or Hughes' or Milone's spot in this last week. I absolutely think May should remain in the bullpen for the rest of this year, I just wonder if moving him in the first place made a hole in the rotation that Twins will regret this week.
  3. I'd randomly pick any game against Houston- they'd have us up an additional game in the WC standings Houston's record would be 82-75, The Twins would be 82-74, a half game up on HOU and tied with LAA for the 2nd wild card.
  4. Escobar squared to bunt and then pulled the bat back (at least according to the radio, I couldn't see the play), and Gladden's point was that Hunter was reacting to Escobar squaring around to bunt, took a few steps too many towards third in anticipation of contact, then got himself hung out to dry. My impression of the exchange was that Gladden blamed Hunter for getting himself out, however he could see why Hunter would think a play was on. Still Hunter's fault for being too far from 2nd to get back in time. I do think that Gladden hates it when players square around to bunt and then pull the bat back. He's said similar things many times this year about needed to actually try to bunt the ball if you square around (and the bunt is the play called) because if you don't it shows your cards to the other team and basically removes the option from the equation. Plus things like Hunter getting picked off can happen because the runners on base don't know you are bluffing any more than the fielders on the other team do.
  5. Regarding Joe Mauer - I think people look at his numbers and think, wow, he's not the player he used to be. They are right in thinking that, but at the same time he had that ridiculous on base streak this year, as well as plays like the two-out double last night that have helped the Twins score runs, take the lead, and win games. As his counting stats have diminished, I think he's still helping the team win. I don't buy into players being "clutch" or having some innate ability to come through in specific situations. At least, not in a way that is predictable or projectable. What I do buy into is the results that have actually happened this year. Mauer's performance with runners in scoring position this year has been great. His ability to get on base in front of Sano in the second half has been so valuable. He deserves scrutiny for the position he plays and payroll he commands, as well as the elite level of past performance, but I have to give the guy some credit for the role he's played in this team's success.
  6. I think the first game is huge - if the Twins can knock Cleveland out of contention, it could drastically alter the strategy of the team no longer in the race. "Critical Series" and "final week of the season" are such nice things to read in tandem about the Twins.
  7. Evan Gattis is just the third guy in MLB history to have 10+ triples in a season and 0 stolen bases. One is a pitcher, the other was Russ "I am not a Crook" Nixon. Gattis actually has 0 Career Stolen Bases. It's just weird.
  8. This Jeckyll and Hyde business is getting old for Gibson, regardless of the gravity of the situation. He improved upon his rookie season, and maybe his consistency will continue on that path next year. He's hard to trust at the moment, but it doesn't change the fact that he can be very effective at times. He may be worn out now, which is not good for a rotation full of guys that are coming off injuries, currently injured, or just gassed. Ervin Santana is probably the healthiest guy starting right now, and that's too bad for the Twins' in the postseason, assuming they can make this last push.
  9. I think it's time for scoreboard watchers to be a Mariners fan - they can put a dent in a couple teams' post season hopes. That Hou - Tex series is the one that has the biggest chance to decide the playoff teams from the West. I would pull for Texas in that series, I wouldn't count on Arizona providing much resistance against Houston to close out the year.
  10. In his Career, Santana has only pitched once on three days rest. Here is a link to his splits: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=santaer01&year=Career&t=p#dr Couple ways to view that- either that there's no time like the present to test him, or that maximizing his value means giving him just two more starts. He did get the first half of the season off, so he's probably less fatigued than the guys that have been pitching all season...
  11. Kepler Watch begins now! 13 games left, so my expectation is 26 Homers between Kepler and Sano. Anything less is a horrible letdown.
  12. If any team can do the least likely thing, the Twins are the most likely to do it. . .
  13. Which best describes the Twins Playoff Chances? \ http://i.ytimg.com/vi/vnciwwsvNcc/hqdefault.jpg
  14. The years of 1962, 1963, 1964, are instances in which 8 Twins had 10 or more homers. 1962 it was all the regulars, 1963 and 1964 had one from the bench add over 10. 1964 had 5 guys with 20 + homers. 1997 and 2004 had 9 twins with 10+ homers, but not all regulars, it was some mix of bench guys and regulars. 1970 - all the starters had 10+ except 2B Danny Thompson, who had zero. 1965 and 1991 had 6, 1987 had 7.
  15. I think Pelfrey won't be back, but Santana will be, so the math works out the same way.
  16. here's a source for that nickname: http://www.brooklyneagle.com/articles/2015/8/5/future-brooklyn-dodgers-nicknamed-%E2%80%98superbas%E2%80%99-when-they-started-spring-training
  17. All the Red Sox, White Sox, Redlegs, etc. are named for the long socks and shorter than full length pants worn by the players. The original style of the long socks was introduced because the players from the 1867 Cincinnati team (a pre-professional team) wanted to "better display their manly calves in carmine hose." Other teams all wore long pants like Manny Ramirez! Cincinnati player Harry Wright brought his red stockings to a new team he formed in Boston, and that's how the Boston team started with the name "Red Stockings" (later changed several times, in 1901 they were known as the Boston Americans because they were in the American League) before settling on Red Sox.
  18. There is some debate among baseball historians about the link between the Baltimore team from 1901 and the Yankees. The Yankees themselves seem to largely ignore the Baltimore records, claiming that The Highlanders were an expansion team and the Baltimore franchise was a separate entity that went out of business. But the fact that several Baltimore players went directly to the New York Franchise and some of the same people were managing the "new" team's finances puts the Yankees' position in a different light. There's some interesting reading to be had on the subject for people that like that kind of stuff.
  19. fun fact - before moving to Chicago and becoming the White Sox, Ban Johnson's team was based in Saint Paul, MN as part of the Western League. A quick chart of the teams in MLB in 1901 and their current incarnations: AL Chicago White Stockings -> Chicago White Sox Boston Americans -> Boston Red Sox Detroit Tigers -> Detroit Tigers Philadelphia Athletics -> Oakland A's Baltimore Orioles -> New York Yankees Washington Senators -> Minnesota Twins Cleveland Bluebirds -> Cleveland Indians Milwaukee Brewers -> Baltimore Orioles NL Pittsburg Pirates -> Pittsburgh Pirates Philadelphia Phillies -> Philadelphia Phillies Brooklyn Superbas -> Los Angeles Dodgers St. Louis Cardinals -> St. Louis Cardinals Boston Beaneaters -> Atlanta Braves Chicago Orphans -> Chicago Cubs (The "Orphans" name came about because Cap Anson A.K.A "Pop" Anson retired, so the team was left without its "Pop") New York Giants -> San Francisco Giants Cincinnati Reds -> Cincinnati Reds
  20. Yeah - I also think it is great that the Twins are in the situation where Sano can come up and represent the winning run in a big game like this at all. I remember when the Twins lost the first playoff game at Target Field and thinking that at least Thome came up in the bottom of the ninth with a chance to win it. Can't win them all, and some losses are harder to swallow, but I have to think that being in a position to win it in the end is all a fan can really ask for.

  22. "I've found that you don't need to wear a necktie if you can hit." - Ted Williams
  23. Yeah - the Tex v Houston series makes me happy because the Twins can make up ground regardless of how that series goes. They can beat each other up and the Twins emerge in the driver's seat.
  24. All l hope is that the Touchdown the Twins gave up to the Sox the other day in the 4th inning is the last touchdown they allow this year...
