Ervin Santana is an excellent consolation prize for the Twins after missing out on Lester, Scherzer, and Shields. Especially considering Santana has a shorter and cheaper contract than those guys. The comparisons to Nolasco just makes Ricky look better to me... I'm hoping that he regresses (in a positive direction) to the mean, too! Maybe they'll still go after Brett Anderson - the more the merrier! Oh, and an outfielder!

I mean, compared to a team that lost 90+ games 4 years in a row, sure the White Sox look pretty good. I was responding more to the tenor of comments saying that Sox were now the favorites to win the division and/or serious playoff contenders this year. I don't think they have done enough yet this offseason, and we haven't seen what the rest of the league will do yet. But if there's comparisons to be made: I think Plouffe is better than Gillaspie, both now and when Plouffe was Gillaspie's age. I'd take Plouffe over him. Also, I'd take Sano over Gillaspie for the next decade or two. I'd take Dozier over the current hole at 2B in Chicago, too. I think both outfield corners in Chicago are suspect. Viciedo and Avisail Garcia are both trouble. The Twins can't really talk in that department, though, so I won't belabor that point. Catching... ? Tyler Flowers and Nieto? I'd honestly rather have Kurt Suzuki and Josmil Pinto. If Molitor would let Pinto have more playing time in 2015 than Gardy was giving him, I like what the Twins have even more. The Sox have a better rotation, no argument from me there. The bullpens I think will depend on what the Twins do in the offseason and how fast the 2013 and 2014 draft class moves up.

Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In some cases I also take solace in the fact that the mystery team rarely wins the bidding... -
Yes - the middle ground rhymes with "The Faint Bluest Dardanelles" I think the difference between the Sox and Twins means that in order to be competitive any time soon, the White sox had no choice but to make large FA signings and trade whatever prospects they think they can spare. The Twins have been slowly (re)building the farm and as a result, there's less urgency in the front office to make a big reach now. The Twins will wait for the next crop prospects to arrive and then contend for a few seasons before starting over. The owner makes money, the fans have something to hope for, almost everyone is happy.

Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?

It makes me feel better to always assume that the Twins are the mystery team in every rumor. -
Plouffe also had twice as many homers and hit 40 doubles. Plouffe had a 3.9 WAR to Gillaspie's 1.5. Gillaspie hits well enough, but his defense is not so hot. Maybe he turns it into a strength as Plouffe did in 2014 - but I think they are not as close as their triple slash makes them out to be. The White Sox have been actively looking to replace Gillaspie this off-season, they've been linked to Sandoval and are rumored to be after Headley as well.

The first thing I said they need is to upgrade the rotation. The White Sox did not just win the AL Central by signing these guys. The Twins have some ground to make up, but the Sox roster was such a mess that these changes alone are not going to buy them a pennant. The Sox still have a pretty terrible farm system.

There is a mystery team offering Lester 7 years ... -
I hope those trades and new contracts cripple the White Sox for years! Sox still need a Catcher, 3rd Base, Left Field and could probably use a bench bat and more help in the bullpen. The Twins, on the other hand, need to improve the rotation, Left Field, Center Field, and could use more help in the bullpen. I don't think that The White Sox have become instant contenders after spending all that $$ - they were terrible enough last year that these changes will make a difference, though probably not as much as they think it will. Cleveland, I think, is the team that should be concerned more so than the Twins. They acquired Brandon Moss to do the 1B/DH/RF shuffle, but other than that they've got a lot of holes to fill.

Article: Twins Preparing To Make Their Pitch
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nolasco had a 4.30 FIP last year - CJ Wilson was at 4.31 A bounceback year for Nolasco should be better than Wilson's 2014. A bounceback year for Wilson could be much better. Wilson's been consistently league average or (much) better with the exception of 2014. Nolasco's ceiling looks like League Average. I think if the Twins add anyone to the rotation, they should at least have the reasonable potential to be better than league average.- 48 replies

Article: Twins Preparing To Make Their Pitch
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Maybe he can pitch more innings if he doesn't have to wear himself out hitting so much," said no AL executive, ever. The thing is that Vogelsong is not a bad pitcher. There are certainly teams that could upgrade the back of their rotation by adding him to mix. I just don't see how he helps the Twins in the short term or the long term.- 48 replies

I had a similar feeling about Pinto that I now have about Meyer and May. If the Twins aren't going to give their aging prospects innings or at bats, they should trade them for someone they will actually put on the field. (Sano, Buxton, Berrios, Polanco, Stewart, etc are still young, I'm not saying they should be traded this year if they aren't promoted, but for Meyer/May/Pinto/Santana/Vargas/Arcia - now's the time) Put them on the field or get something back for them! -
Article: Who Says No? Trevor Plouffe Edition
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
oh hey did everyone forget that Plouffe broke his arm at the end of the year? I realize that he had successful surgery on it already and is expected to be ready to go for spring training, But I noticed that no one mentioned that his season ended with a broken forearm - it's possible that this will have a lasting effect on his hitting. I remain in the camp that the Twins should not look to extend him this offseason, the broken arm was just one more reason that I had forgotten about. -

CJ Wilson might be available via Trade - he had a bad 2014, but that may mean a team would be buying low on him. I can't decide if I think it would be worse for the Twins to do nothing, or to add a starter that's not as good or better than Ricky Nolasco- 48 replies

Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Every indication from offseason rumors are that that Twins will be pushing hard to sign another Starter this week, which is only going to further muddy the picture. Hughes Gibson Nolasco May Meyer Pelfrey Milone Some Random Free Agent Dude The S.R.F.A.D. should be better than at least five of the names on the list, or there's really not much point in offering the contract. The Vogelsong rumors are extremely troubling to me - I feel like the Twins have not learned from their past decade of signing N.L. free agents. These guys are not improving the rotation. Correia is an exception, though even he regressed from his NL numbers and was good mostly in comparison to how bad the rest of the rotation was. -
Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The one-year-make-good-deal looked promising before the Twins crippled their outfield defense - If I were Brett Anderson, I'd be looking to get someone with a better defense to sign me. Also, Target Field was originally thought to be a pitcher's park, but it seems to have normalized a bit. It's not really that appealing on a one year deal, unless a guy thinks he can be Phil Hughes 2.0 . . . -

Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's up to Molitor and Neil Allen to say that now. Terry Ryan is going most likely sign one or two more starters this offseason. It'll be up to the pitching coach and the Manager to determine playing time. maybe they'll go with a six-man rotation? Wouldn't that be bonkers? -
Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only reason I think Santana would still be in play is that Ryan allegedly offered him a 3yr deal last Jan/Feb after the Twins had already signed Nolasco and Hughes and re-signed Pelfrey. This year Milone is an addition, but otherwise, it's essentially all the same guys one year older. One would hope that a year later May and Meyer would have cemented a place in the rotation but I think Ryan would rather have them force the issue by beating out the competition in Spring Training. -
Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ryan has been saying in pretty much every interview that the Twins need more starting pitching. The rotation may be full, but I get the sense that it could get a lot more crowded by Spring Training. I think Ryan's highest cost target is probably Ervin Santana. I think the chances that Ryan signs a bigger name will depend on how long it takes for Lester and Scherzer to sign, because he's pretty much stated that he's "waiting for the market to develop"... I don't really understand the logic there, but I'm not a GM. Brett Anderson, Justin Masterson, Brandon McCarthy, Edinson Volquez, Frankie, Ervin Santana are probably the best Twins fans can hope for this offseason. -
I like the part where Terry Ryan says "I'm not going to say that a lot [of the defensive metrics] aren't accurate . . but a lot of them aren't accurate either." *slow clap*. We don't care what the score is, we're champions on the inside. Surely one of only two players in the league that was WORSE than the Twins' RF will somehow improve the defense in RF.
-
I guess there are pros to this move. Pro - Adding Hunter's bat to the lineup Pro - It's only a one year deal Pro - Molitor could have Hicks/Hunter/Santana in the OF lineup against "tough lefties" That's... about it. Torii was one of my favorite players (not just on the Twins) in his prime, so some part of me is very happy that he will be playing for the Twins again. The logical part of me, however, sees this as such a wrong headed move. It adds a player that solves none of the glaring problems of the 2014 version of the Twins, but it does add a sizeable $$$ to the payroll, effectively limiting further moves that could have been made.

Article: The Case for (Jim) "Kitty" Kaat
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But if you're comparing Kaat to Blyleven on the basis of Strikeouts, I think Bert wins that comparison quite handily. Kaat averaged 4.9 K/9 for his career.
