  1. Maybe the Twins didn't like the injury history? They've certainly seen him play as much or more than most of the other teams in the league. I'm guessing the Blue Jays will claim a bunch of guys, it seems to be their main source of player acquisition in the last year or so.
  2. Down to .214 now - he did draw 2 more walks - maybe the pitching is just really erratic in the Venezuelan league? He's 2nd in the league in walks, but he's just not hitting the ball... The whole team he's playing on is batting .247 - nonetheless, just one extra base hit for Hicks in Winter Ball, a homer hit early on, is not encouraging.
  3. I think the Twins should be given the benefit of the doubt for at least the weekend. And hey, if Maddon's agent is reaching out to teams, but hasn't reached out to the one team that has a vacancy, well, maybe he doesn't want the job?
  4. Will fans be more interested in Molitor or Maddon as manager? Certainly people that follow other teams in the league know Maddon's reputation, a lot of casual fans in MN may be more familiar with Molly. I definitely think Maddon would make a great addition to the Twins organization. I hope the Twins make an effort to contact him and gauge his interest.
  5. Does a manager's salary factor into a potential luxury tax penalty? If a team paid Maddon 10MM a year, would that necessarily have to impact their player payroll, or are they considered to be two separate things for revenue sharing purposes?
  6. Whoa, what's up in Tampa? Even if the Twins can't lure Maddon, maybe they will turn their attention to some of the Tampa bench coaches now?
  7. It's hard to be patient about this, I feel like the week following the end of the World Series will be when the Twins announce the new Manager. They will want potential free agents (as well as their own players) to know who is going to be in the dugout.
  8. Kepler would likely be safe from a Rule V draft, but would he be able to elect free agency if he was removed from the 40-Man? I'm guessing that he had to be added for a reason, was he coming up on minor league free agency already? I felt that Polanco was added early last year, too, but it turned out that the Twins were in danger of losing him and it also ended up being important to have him on the 40 Man so he could fill in for some of the wounded infielders for a couple cups of coffee.
  9. Also, it was interesting that Jose Oquendo, Dave Martinez, and Wally Backman seemingly were not on the Twins' radar at all. There's no way to know if they were or were not contacted, but those three have been in lots of other team's managerial searches recently.
  10. Because he's still on the 25 Man Roster? Parmelee should be DFA'd or traded (if that's even possible given his limited value)
  11. That's an interesting angle - that Terry Ryan is interviewing as many candidates as he can to get some scouting on the other organizations' feeling about how the Twins do business. I'm sure that's part of it - at least, that's an added benefit to casting a wide net and doing the diligence to find the right candidate.
  12. Hicks recorded his first 2014 Venezuelan League hit , going 1-3 yesterday. Box Score
  13. To me, the ideal configuration looks like this: LF: FA/trade acquisition CF: FA/trade acquisition 4th and 5th Outfielder: Schafer and Hicks SS: Danny Santana UTIL: Eduardo Escobar DFA'd, traded, released: Nuñez and Parmelee. I think Parmelee is fine, but the Twins can find someone else to surpass his production and be the starter ahead of Hicks and Schafer.
  14. Yes. exactly, it's not just the fact that he was extended, it's that it was a very good deal for the Twins
  15. Before Gardy was let go, I was concerned about what would happen at the Catcher position if Suzuki was traded or allowed to leave via Free Agency - in the thread talking about extending his contract, my big worry was that Pinto would still be stuck riding the pine with Suzuki gone and the Twins would trot out Eric Fryer and or Chris Herrmann instead of Pinto. Instead, I think Pinto will get a closer look in 2015 than he would have under Gardy, and Suzuki will have the pressure of a younger, more powerful bat waiting in the wings. I think it was among the best possible outcomes for the Twins to retain Suzuki, because even if he's his 2012-2013 version of himself, that's a better than average back-up for Pinto.
  16. If Rasmus wants that Granderson money, I think he'd need to sign a 1-year deal somewhere and have a really good season. Then he'd still only be 29 and a good season could make someone overpay for his services. The Twins could really use Rasmus in 2015, but I agree $12MM/year is a bit steep considering what the Twins typically spend.
  17. MLB Trade Rumors guessed it would be about $12MM on a one year deal (assuming he'd take just one year).
  18. It's possible (not likely, just possible) that the Twins could get production from Eddie Rosario in LF - There's not much data to say his bat would be that great in the majors yet, but even putting Rosario there would feel like an upgrade to me over Parmelee/Colabello/Willingham/Kubel/Bartlett etc.
  19. I think Nuñez will be playing for a different team in 2015, just a hunch. I hope Parmelee is not in Left field, he's an adequate first baseman, but I cringed whenever he or Colabello were in the lineup playing the outfield. Schafer is perfectly capable to play in Left, with Hicks being at least average. I could see the Twins rolling with a rotation of those two and Danny Santana covering Center and Left. That said, I really really hope that the Twins add an outfielder that capable defensively and is a better hitter than Hicks/Schafer in Left, and/or a better CF defender. Santana didn't embarass himself in CF the way that Escobar did (or Bartlett in Left) , but it's nowhere close to an ideal situation. Colby Rasmus, Peter Bourjos, doesn't matter to me ultimately who the Twins find, but I feel that have to add somebody to the current rotation of outfielders that pushes those three down a space on the depth chart.
  20. Definitely looking for bouncebacks from Sano and Buxton, though I'm guessing that will be mostly in AA or AAA, with potential call ups at mid season or later. Nolasco can't get much worse, can he? I unfortunately also am dreading a "reverse bounceback" by Kurt Suzuki. I think he was great this year, but I don't see him repeating a career year again. Hope I'm wrong about that and he and Pinto have a spirited battle for the starting job. And I won't call it a comeback / bounceback, but I have hope for Arcia to put it all together in 2015 and have a monster season.
  21. That's a good distinction to make - it wasn't a direct line from one to the other. I think the point remains valid though, in the sense that Hunter did have Puckett around spring training and throughout the season, and Span was around Hunter in Spring training and had him as a resource as he made his way up the minor league ranks, Revere and Span actually played on the same team for awhile. By the time Hicks was promoted to starting CF, he was the best CF left in the organization (player or coach), and we can all see how that worked out for him.
  22. I think this is the most important offseason of Hicks' career - if he can find a way to improve in some key areas by next Spring, he has a good chance of keeping his job. If he is no better next year, he'll probably find his way out of the organization once Buxton is promoted (or earlier if the Twins find a trade partner to acquire someone to replace him). He showed a little improvement this year compared to 2013, but it hasn't looked good for Hicks in the majors to date.
  23. I think all of the outfielders lack a mentor in the Twins organization right now - Even when Willingham was still on the roster, he was an outfielder in name mostly. Certainly he had some leadership qualities, but he was in the outfield because that was the least damaging place to play him in the field. Most of the coaches that worked on Gardy's staff were infielders. Bruno is another exception, but I don't think his fielding was ever a big plus on his resume. CF is a hard position to play, and having a veteran on the roster that can relate some of the finer points of the position would be extremely valuable. I am not in favor of a Torii Hunter Reunion Tour signing, but if it did happen this would be the biggest plus - having him in the org again would allow Hicks and Buxton both to have a mentor that was the very best CF'er for years.
  24. I wonder ... How are the pitchers' fielding metrics this year? Usually people think of 2B and SS up the middle, but there is a 3rd infielder that's usually positioned right up the middle. Are pitchers getting into a good fielding position after their follow through? Or is this another data point showing that Twins' pitchers are giving up more than a fair share of line drives vs, pop ups or ground balls? Do Twins pitchers have much of a chance to field screamers back to the box?
