Article: Bullpen Calculus
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, if the goal is to acquire a relief pitcher that is better than Tim Stauffer, I think Fryer is not an unreasonable starting point. If they want someone especially good.... Yes, they might have to trade away someone like Escobar, which to me would be a mistake. "Moved" includes being put on waivers in my mind. As in, the Twins could claim a pitcher that someone else discarded and then waive Aaron Thompson, or Fryer, or whomever... Still improving the bullpen, without really giving up much in the deal.- 85 replies

finishing a convo from the other thread: Yes - the Twins could trade Dozier in a couple years, though recently they've generally only traded guys that were playing poorly or "didn't fit" the Twins Way (see JJ Hardy). Dozier has been playing well and seems to be a front office favorite. My guess is that he will not be traded if he maintains this level of play (and the front office stays the same). He's more likely to be traded for next to nothing following a slump.

What if Torii had stayed all along?

is "The" = "forg" an inside joke of some kind? -
Jones is still the Twins' all-time leader for Leadoff homeruns, yes? I would also submit an honorable mention top 5 moments game - he hit two homers (one of them a grand Slam, his first career Grand Slam) in the same game that Torii Hunter and Corey Koskie also had two homers. Even though it's against the Twins, that's such a great GIF - I mean, If I were Tom Lawless and I hit a Homer in the World Series, I would probably do the same thing. When would he ever in his life get that opportunity again? (yeah yeah unwritten rules, act like you've been there before, etc etc.) To that point in his MLB career he'd only hit one homer. He only managed one more after that, in 1988. I looked it up and Lawless played his entire MLB career without being hit by a pitch once - so if there was payback, it wasn't on him. Jim Lindeman did get plunked by Joe Niekro later in that same game, though the score was still close enough that it was likely an accident and not revenge. Lawless faced Viola again in game 7 of the series, and went 0-3. That homer was the only hit Lawless managed against Viola in 10 career plate appearances.

Article: Rocking The Boat?
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ah, I should have phrased that more carefully, I was wondering what the "threat" was that Kennys allegedly made on Sunday. As in, was the threat that he was going to withdraw the earlier request for an extra week? In any case, what we know is that Baerga benched the teams' top three players for some reason, and then the team fired Baerga (possibly/probably for benching three top players in a playoff race). Baerga was the league's "manager of the year" last year, so it's not like he's some scrub. Maybe the three guys did something to "disrespect" Baerga and he tried to make an example of them. Vargas could have been the instigator of this, or just happened to be in the same room as the player that started whatever it was. Maybe they were out too late, maybe they broke an unwritten rule of some kind... Like you said, we'll probably never know. I think it's worth the Twins having a casual conversation with Vargas, but certainly nothing to be too concerned about. -

Vargas is probably the youngest of the three "pillars" mentioned above, yeah? I wonder what Vargas actually said or did that led to the article stating that Vargas "threatened to leave the team." Was it that Vargas was saying he wouldn't ask for the extra time from the Twins? Was it really about Baerga? This is a tricky thing about translation and sports reporting. Maybe the reporter read something into statements by players (including Vargas) about Baerga's managerial style. Then take the story as written by the reporter and translate it from one language to another ... There was no direct quote from Vargas in the article. So.. we don't know what he said, to whom, in what context. Was he bashing Baerga? Was he concerned that the team was losing and if they lost again their season would be over? We're reading the sports reporters' version of the events, translated from Spanish. It could have gone down exactly like it is implied (Vargas and two teammates conspired to get Baerga fired), or maybe it was not anything like that at all. I don't think the firing of Baerga should put Vargas in a negative light, nor do I think Molitor or any of the Twins' coaches should have to worry about Vargas' attitude as a Twin. They might want to have a chat with him during Spring training and get his side of the story, but I don't see enough info to make Vargas (or Baerga) a villain. -
Carlos Beltran played a few years back when he was still in his prime. It's more common for a great player to go home to play winter ball than for a star to go to another country to play what amounts to an exhibition. Bobby Abreu played winter ball the year before he retired to show MLB teams he could still play. I think Arcia is just on the cusp of "established" even though he's been with the Twins for awhile now. He's still very young.

Article: Twins Extend Phil Hughes
Kirby_waved_at_me replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Makes a person wonder if Dozier and/or Plouffe will get an offer this offseason as well. Both were discussed in depth on other threads already, but it seems like the Twins are generally in favor of extensions over finding a free agent replacement. -

The exciting thing to me about this rotation is fans are at the point now where they can talk about the Twins' fifth starter and have a legitimate argument that the pitchers (plural!) that don't make the rotation could be starting for another team. It's something I'm trying to be carfeul about - I don't want to set my expectations too high. But to me, this is the best transaction of the offseason for the Twins so far. -

SWEET. That's really a reasonable contract, too. -
the Rule V guy Graham should be on the list under bullpen arms, unless the thought is he won't make the team out of spring training.

Did the White Sox try to get Samardzjia from the Cubs at the deadline (or last off-season)? It sure seems like the price to acquire the Shark has gone down as time went by. Very different circumstances, of course, for the Cubs letting him go vs. the A's trying to get something of value for him... I think the White Sox, if they were after him before this offseason, they were pretty quiet about it. It's possible they couldn't afford to acquire him via trade with the Cubs (they definitely would not have matched the A's offer).

Semi-related thought: I really wanted the Twins to sign Melky Cabrera. However, once the Twins signed Hunter, adding Cabrera on top of Hunter's signing would be a bad move. Same thing if the Twins went after Alex Rios. I think the Twins could still add Colby Rasmus or make a trade for a good defensive CF, but once they signed Hunter, the other plodding corner outfield types rightfully fell off the Twins' radar. I really wanted the Twins to go after Brett Anderson and Justin Masterson on one year deals. Once the Twins added Ervin Santana (and had already missed on Masterson) I was glad they didn't add Anderson on top of that. All of the White Sox signings would have been bad additions for the Twins, but in aggregate they will improve the playoff hopes of the White Sox.

Very true, though Santana will be 35 in 2018 and 36 in 2019 - pitching 400 innings over those two years would not be unprecedented, but it's still a mark of a pretty good pitcher. Those options vesting seems unlikely, but if Santana can pitch effectively enough to get that many innings, he's earned that extra $14MM. Also, who's to say Molitor will still be the one managing in 2019? (sad trombone) (I hope he is)
-
It would be pretty impressive if Ervin Santana pitches 400 innings over those two years considering the Twins' best pitcher didn't throw that many this season. Unlike Hughes, Santana has reached the milestone 5 times in the past and was just 4 innings shy in 2014, so I guess it's more likely than some things, but still pretty unlikely that either option will vest.

It's odd; each deal on its own feels like a questionable call, yet when they are all put together, I can't shake the feeling that the White Sox really improved their roster for the near future (3 or more seasons). I agree that I don't think the Twins would have benefitted from making these deals themselves (though I think I could live with a 3 year deal for Melky compared to the 5-6 years he was rumored to be asking for...). I will feel a lot better if the Twins add one more defense first outfielder (or if Rosario breaks out in 2015 and ends up playing in the field a lot with great defense).
