  1. New post on MLB Trade Rumors - http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/twins-notes-coaches-yang-pitching-targets-hunter-duensing.html#disqus_thread Twins have offered a contract to Hunter, usual suspects have been contacted about pitching help, not much to get excited about...
  2. I'm talking mostly in terms of the counting stats, less so than the advanced metrics. Mussina was better than Kaat, and had a higher peak. Roughly similar, though, are the counting stats that HOF voters have tradtionally (rightly or wrongly) used to elect guys. ERA, Wins, Shutouts, World Series Wins, yadda yadda yadda. Kaat had a lower ERA, but Mussina pitched in an offensive heavy environment. Mussina struck out more batters ( a lot more) but as Seth noted, that was also typical of the game at that time, fewer Runs, but also fewer Ks. Maybe Mark Buerhle is a better comp?
  3. Blyleven is 5th all-time in strikeouts... Top 5 in the league in Ks in 14 seasons - 4th or better every year for the whole decade of the 1970s. Compared to his peers (not including Nolan Ryan) Blyleven struck out more batters than most.
  4. Descalso is a non-tender candidate - I think Dozier is closer to the first group than the 2nd. Plouffe I think is closer to the 2nd than the first. Don't know why I feel that way, it's unfairly rooted in a gut feeling. Both are better in my opinion than the 2nd group. I'd rank Dozier above Allen Craig, for sure. I'd rank Plouffe above everyone in group 2, for sure. Outside of that, until they actually play the games, it's anyone's guess how they will play next year and the following years...
  5. I think a really close contemporary comp for Kaat is Mike Mussina - if Moose is deemed worthy by voters and gets in, I think Kaat should be in too.
  6. How many other 17-time gold glove award winners have been passed over for induction?
  7. I think Blyleven was a better pitcher than Kaat, though I think both were very good. I give Blyleven the edge with all the Shutouts and Strikeouts. Some of that is longevity, but being able to remain on a major league roster (and in a starting rotation) is an accomplishment on its own. If the voters were looking at defense, I think Kaat would get a well-deserved boost. Both in reputation and iby the numbers, Kaat was one of the better defenders at his position. He could also handle the bat pretty well for a pitcher.
  8. I'd be happy if they did even half that - a 2015 debut for Sano, May in the Rotation starting opening day, Rosario and Burdi sometime in 2015. To me that would be a lot (given the track record). In retrospect, May, Santana, Vargas, and Polanco all getting major league service time in 2014 was a pretty good step.
  9. So the deadline to offer players like that a contract is Spring Training? At what point would they become free agents if the Twins did nothing at all?
  10. My guess is that these decisions were already made weeks ago by Terry Ryan, and he has kept his cards close to his vest. Nuñez and Duensing should both be able to find work somewhere, I think they don't fit in the Twins' plans in the short term. Nothing particularly wrong with either guy, just that they are taking up roster space and have not created enough separation from their peers to be retained over adding more of the young guys from the farm system. What is the contract status of the three Chris' ? Are they already under contract for 2015, or do they have to be extended a contract by Tuesday as well (arb eligible or not)? Herrmann, Colabello, Parmelee could all be packing their bags and I think the Twins would be able to replace their contributions with either FA signings or with promotions to guys like Rosario.
  11. I think Plouffe says yes to that. I think the Twins would say maybe to that. Nice cost certainty for Plouffe, and some security. The Twins like it because ... They get a fixture at third base? It's already been mentioned multiple times, but that Sano fellow seems poised to play in the majors in the not -too-distant future. Maybe he takes over at third. Maybe Sano gets relocated to 1B, or RF or LF... but he's probably going to be given every opportunity to stick at the hot corner. It's easy to say now that the Twins won't need Plouffe in 4-5 seasons. If I were the Twins, I wouldn't be in a hurry to extend his contract - he's a valuable piece, but he's still under team control. I'm less certain that Plouffe would get arbitration raises as high as Dozier will, so I lean towards an extension for Dozier more so than for Plouffe. Even though it's easy to say, it's not a certainty that Sano will stick at 3B and thrive there. The upside is that Plouffe is a solid piece that won't break the bank. By the time this hypothetical extension is over, Plouffe should still be producing at an acceptable level. To me, the Dozier extension was a yes-yes win-win. Plouffe is a bit trickier to judge.
  12. It worked out really well for the Twins on the Span deal, not so much with Nick Blackburn - I think those might be the two extremes. To me it boils down to whether Dozier can be reasonably expected to stay healthy and productive for the next 2-3 years. The original post proposal would be totally worth it at that point. Had Span not gotten that concussion, I think he might have netted the Twins even more in trade than they got from the Nationals.
  13. "Top performing pitcher" from the KIA Tigers' perspective I should have said - that's a good point. I think the market showed what MLB teams felt these two pitchers were going to be worth.
  14. Assuming he doesn't suffer a major injury, Dozier would definitely make more on a FA contract than any extension offered this offseason. The value of the contract in a trade is worth considering.
  15. I think it's very team friendly - it reminds me a little of the contract extension that Denard Span signed with the Twins. The added benefit of a team friendly contract is that it is also a more appealing trade chip. The Twins would be fortunate if Dozier signed it, because if he's good for the length of it, he'd make more in Arb, and more in that 1st FA year. I don't think the Twins would want to have him under contract for much longer than this, though... I think Dozier might politely decline that offer this year, though.
  16. I think the team was hoping for more than the other KBO pitcher received from the Padres, which was in the neighborhood of $2MM - they must have thought that the league's top performing pitcher would earn a higher bid, but it didn't turn out that way.
  17. Oh, well, back to focusing on Masterson, Shields, Ervin Santana, etc., and trades - Really hoping the Twins find some talented Starting Pitching to add to the rotation this offseason.
  18. He won his league's Cy Young award - I think he'd be the Twins' 2nd or 3rd best starting Pitcher in 2015 (assuming they don't sign anyone else). Hughes will be better, and hopefully either Gibson, May, or Meyer would be #2.
  19. That's a good clarification. The KIA Tigers do not know who the winning bid is from. The Korean League doesn't tell the team the name of the winning bidder. So, Berardino's source was just guessing, or was given bad info.
  20. One of Berardino's sources was a coach on the Korean team - seems like a pretty close source. It's not like the league in Korea sprang up overnight - they should have a phone number- http://www.tigers.co.kr/season_off.asp
  21. Someone should be able to call an official with the Team and/or the league and get this story correct, shouldn't they?
  22. More money in the bank to offer Torii now, I guess...
  23. Bernier wasn't added to the 40 Man, was he? I read that his deal was a minor-league deal, but the Rochester article says he "still has options remaining" - I'm guessing those are personal options as opposed to contractual options? http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/extra-bases/2014/11/19/red-wings-star-doug-bernier-re-signs-with-twins/19284749/
  24. Probably two somebodies as he's the 2nd best guy the Twins have assuming that Santana is going to be playing SS in 2015.
  25. I think they should look elsewhere even if they tender Schafer a contract. Every player is unique (just look at Brady Anderson), but it does seem like regression is likely for Schafer. As long as he can play competent defense, he has value to the Twins. I hope they keep him for 2015 in addition to adding a new outfielder (or two) to challenge him for a starting spot.
