  1. ah, bummer. Buxton got a good pitch to swing at, though.
  2. I just mean that we're all older than we've ever been. And now we're even older. Sano will be up sooner than ever!
  3. At this point in the season, I don't see many teams that I would call desperate for starting pitching. Pelfrey is the kind of player for which a desperate team trades.
  4. A trade would be a good solution - the Twins have needs - a middle of the order bat that can be a regular DH, or a catcher, or a better SS, or some bullpen help.... There could be a match that would help both teams. I think all other things being equal the Twins should look to trade the guy with the most value. That might be Trevor May due to his age or Milone due to his lefty-ness and longer track record. I would hate to lose May, though, so my vote would be Tommy Milone (assuming the return is a needed upgrade with as much team control as the Twins have for Milone). I suppose the Twins don't have to make a trade - May or Milone can be optioned, Pelfrey could move to the pen. The return in any trade has to be more than a short term patch to be worth it. The Twins Rotation depth has proven to be very useful so far - why give up that depth now?
  5. my point is that you don't carry the bat out onto the field with you, and if you're hitting poorly, it doesn't matter which defensive position you play. If you are a slick fielder, that can give you a little leeway. If the rest of the lineup is hitting, then it's less of a problem. If you're not fielding well, and you're not hitting well (like Mauer), the only saving grace is being the best option out of several bad options. The production team A gets from their first baseman, that same production doesn't have to come from the first baseman on team B.
  6. Somewhat of a tangent - Mauer not hitting as a first baseman, or Mauer being the worst hitting first baseman is not the thing to focus on. Teams can construct their lineups differently defensively. Dozier's homers and XBH in general are welcome regardless of where he's playing on defense. If the Twins had another player that had no other place in the field and was outhitting Joe right now, then sure, bench Mauer for this other guy that provides more value. I don't see that guy on the current roster. If you wanted to pretend that Joe was at second and Dozier was at first, would it be better somehow? If a team has a cleanup guy an he's a catcher, or a SS, or a 2B... that's great. I don't subscribe to the idea that certain defensive positions have a duty provide a specific brand of offense. What is significant is comparing Mauer to other hitters batting 3rd in the lineup. That feels like fair ground for criticism. In that sense, there's a big problem. Most of the team is slumping right now, so it's not just Mauer, but it couldn't hurt to try some other configurations, they can't hit much worse as a group as they are now.
  7. So - have any media members had the stones to interview Mauer and ask him questions about his health, or his own theories for his slumping performance in 2015? I think Molitor would be candid if asked point blank about his first baseman. Has anyone asked him on record? It feels like they've ignored the issue on Molitor's radio show on Sundays, maybe I am just forgetting what they talked about. Mauer would not be obligated to really say anything about it, and I wouldn't blame him if he decided to give a non-answer, I think the coaches might be more likely to give some feedback publicly.
  8. I would like that platoon - especially if Arcia also gets some additional starts at DH and Hicks every once in a great while would play in the corner opposite from Arcia to give Rosario a breath or in CF to give Buxton a rare day off (even Super Humans might not play all 162). I really hope the Twins don't give up on Arcia, I think he's got better days ahead.
  9. I feel bad for the Twins Starting Pitchers - they've kept the team in the game for most of this long run of losses, but the offense just hasn't shown up. Gibson is gonna have to mash his own taters, I guess.
  10. The food's a lot better in big leagues, too, so that's something...
  11. I think it's a run saved over just not having a player crouched behind home plate at all. Just Kidding! I like Suzuki just fine, though I wish there was a prospect a bit closer or that Pinto had made bigger strides this year and forced the Twins to call him up.
  12. The Twins could really use a hitter in their lineup that hits like the good Arcia. It's harder to find legitimate lefty power these days, so I think the Twins are more than happy to give Arcia time to work out of his funk in AAA. He's not blocking anyone down there at the moment.
  13. The only thing more important than fielding is Madison Bumgarner, apparently!
  14. I'd be surprised if that happened, but he does seem like the odd man out at the moment.
  15. I don't think fans should be voting for starters either, but to take that away from the fans at this point seems punitive. The problem is that the game actually has an impact on the outcome of the World Series, so the players selected to each team are more significant than if it were a true exhibition. If I were a KC fan working the ballots, I'd vote for the worst NL players on the ballot while selecting Royals... you want the NL team to be terrible so the AL gets home field, right? Switching from paper ballots + online to online only must be saving MLB some money...
  16. Or evidence why more fans should vote... I think Kansas City fans figured out an efficient ballot stuffing method. have you ("you" as in every Twins fan) voted for Dozier lately?
  17. Yeah, Santana looked completely lost since Opening Day - I think sending him to AAA was the right decision. The Twins have other young players that can play SS at the major league level while Santana figures things out. With Rosario, keeping him in the lineup and in the outfield keeps Schafer/Robinson from playing everyday. That's a good thing for the Twins and for the development of Rosario. I suppose if Rosario started flailing away like Danny was, an argument could be made to move him down again. Danny got almost two months to try to sort it out up here, I hope the same treatment would be extended to Eddie R., were he to start slumping.
  18. So odd that those ERA and FIP numbers are running in opposite directions like that...
  19. That would be my guess as well, but I'd add that the only CFer whose 40-Man spot is secure is the newest addition.
  20. so... what IS the deal with Schafer? Is he traveling with the team? Have any of the beat reporters tweeted anything or posted anything about Schafer's progress? Would the Twins rather have Schafer, Robinson, or Hicks- assuming only one is going to be able to stay?
  21. Not to mention that Nolasco was (FINALLY) starting to earn his paycheck, I really doubt that the Twins would want to pay him to be on the DL. I thought the official word was that Hicks told the coaches he was hurt during morning batting practice. It was a surprise to Molitor, at least that's how he described the situation Sunday morning. He was still holding a lineup card that had both Hicks and Buxton in it. He said more than once during the radio show that he was waiting to hear Hicks' status before posting his lineup. I think if Hicks was really day to day or just sore, I think Duensing would have been the guy to go (or possibly Shane Robinson).
  22. Whatever the opposite of Smoke and Mirrors is - that's the formula the Cardinals have used to somehow have winning teams year in and year out. They've got pitching and defense, they don't really have a replacement in the batting order for Pujols, but that hasn't really slowed them down much. One weakness seems to be that they strike out a lot. Almost everyone in their lineup strikes out twice as often as they take a walk. (let's ignore for the moment that the Twins are even more strikeout prone...)
  23. I think it would be a shame if Rosario were sent down. His play on the field has earned him a long tether. Arcia, when he's ready, should take the place of Robinson - giving the Twins mostly young outfielders and Torii Hunter. Depending on how long Hicks is on the DL, the Twins might have time enough to decide if Buxton should stay up or go back down. I think he may need to beat the odds to stay up - the Twins are talking about Buxton the way they have been taking about Polanco, with the exception of also mentioning Buxton's top prospect status. Personally, I'd want all the young guys that have been called up to stay up. I think Rosario should definitely stay, even if he gets into a slump.
  24. Buxton will either leadoff or bat at the bottom of the lineup today, per Molitor on the radio right now...
