  1. Or he preferred to go back to Japan (to take a slight paycut) where he could play in the best league/be a star again rather then riding the bus between Rochester and Scranton for another season? I don't give him any credit, he was a terrible ball player for this club and is one of the reasons why this team finished in last place two years in a row. Good riddance. He was a big part of the reason the 2011 team finished in last place. He had very little to do with how bad the 2012 team was/is. The Twins got rid of Hardy and choose to bring in Nishioka to be the teams starting SS in 2011/12/13. The SS woes that plague the team this year are still his fault, since he was getting paid to be the starting SS. I can't blame Nishioka for this season. It's not Nishioka's fault that the Twins didn't like Hardy and traded him for nothing. It's not Nishioka's fault the Twins didn't do their due diligence before signing him. I guess you could argue he should have played better, but considering the statistics on him between AA, AAA, and MLB, I don't think he's performed below his talent level.

I don't give him any credit, he was a terrible ball player for this club and is one of the reasons why this team finished in last place two years in a row. Good riddance. I'm not arguing that he wasn't awful, just saying that it takes some balls to walk away from millions of dollars as a complete and utter failure at your job. Few players will admit that to that, much less leave guaranteed money on the table. After all, Nick Blackburn is still on the roster. Nick Blackburn has it made in the shade, at least for 2013. It'll be the Summer of George for him. I wouldn't walk away from that. But though he IS guaranteed money, he's not technically on the roster.

  4. Two things I learned - the Twins have given up on Dozier at shortstop, and they're about ready to propose marriage to Florimon.
  5. It doesn't count as a FA acquisition if they pick up his $6 million option.
  6. Prediction - the Twins will sign a FA pitcher. But it won't be anybody who's on your or my radar.
  7. If we had two Escobars, I wouldn't be able to decide which one of them to call "Pumpkin".
  8. Is there any way we can call up Clete Thomas? We could use his positive WPA.
  9. It seems obvious to you and me, but the Twins have demonstrated twice now that they've got a love for Capps that goes beyond how he actually performs on the field. It was obvious to me that signing Capps again in the offseason was a mistake, but the Twins did it anyway.
  10. IMO you have to take the Triple Crown thing out of the equation. Say Joe Mauer somehow magically nips Cabrera for the batting title by .001. Cabrera still leads in HR and RBI, though. Does your mind change at all because he didn't win the Triple Crown? Because it really shouldn't.
  11. This is what I was saying in the thread about Florimon potentially being the opening day shortstop. Florimon obviously has the range and the arm, but he's got a bit of "stone hands" to him... I've seen far too many routine groundballs clank off of him. And I don't think Florimon will ever be as good offensively as Carroll. I think Carroll will get enough plate appearances, by hook or by crook, to earn that 2014 option. And if he does, keep in mind that a) it's a player option, so there's a chance he'd rather retire at that point, and if he still wants to play, he might rather go play for another team by then.
  12. The Twins' best chance to upgrade their rotation is through a trade, but Span alone won't get it done. My prediction is that Span and a prospect will be traded for an AA starter and maybe a throw-in. And the Twins will sign one "filler" starter a la Marquis.
  13. That "crazy fastball" is a double-edged sword. Look at the graphic - a lot of movement , but the pitch is obviously a ball and Deduno is lucky that Robinson swung at it. He's a unique pitcher but teams are going to figure out real quick to lay off Deduno's fastball. Deduno's numbers scream "regression" to me. But I think he's a lock anyway because the Twins won't bring in enough starters to bump him from the rotation.
  14. I'm going to assume you're referring to me since I was the one who first said I'd rather have Carroll at short than Florimon. For one thing, I'm not a Carroll backer. I don't like him as a starter. He's a capable backup. But I like 39-year old Carroll better than 26-year old Florimon. What I'd really like is for the Twins to find somebody outside their organization to play shortstop because I don't believe the Twins shortstop of the future is both a.) in the Twins system and b.) close enough to contribute in 2013. My point was I've already seen enough of Florimon to know he's not the guy.
  15. I don't think Terry Ryan will improve the rotation enough. I think Span will be traded for a pitcher, but we're going to be disappointed with the caliber of pitcher received. I'm not counting on positive contributions from Baker. And TR already said he's not going after the best pitchers in free agency. So the team will be improved, but not enough. I predict about 75 wins.
  16. Remember that if Carroll gets 401 PA's next season he has a PLAYER option for 2014 when he will be 40 years old. Would you still rather have Carroll? Yes. If I'm the Twins I'm not thinking about $2 million for Carroll in 2014, I'm trying to put my best players out there. I really don't want Carroll there either, but I'd rather give him 401 PAs next year than give Florimon 401 PAs, option or not. If Florimon gets 401 at bats next year... It will mean that he got better at some things and is doing a job. Therefore no problem... If he continues to struggle... He won't see 401 at bats in 2013. If Carroll gets 401 at bats next year... It will mean that Florimon and Escobar and Dozier or a new MI didnt get the job done and we needed Carroll to hold down the fort. Im hoping Carroll doesn't get 401 at bats for that reason. There you go. Are you confident that the Twins will have all of 2B, shortstop, and 3B locked down for an entire season next year? It hasn't happened recently. And look at the guys you named - I'd even add Plouffe to the list - how many do you think will be able to stick without needing to be replaced? Like I said before, it looks to me like Carroll will get enough PAs anyway.
  17. BTW, I think Carroll's going to eclipse 401 PAs next season regardless.
  18. Gardy must be seeing something I'm not, because I can tell Florimon has the range and the arm to play shortstop but I'm still concerned about his hands and his concentration. His bat has been as advertised. I think I'd rather have Jamey Carroll as the regular shortstop.
  19. It seems that TR's "no scholarships" philosophy was mostly just lip service.
  20. Wow, it sounds to me like there's a lot more plus-offensive shortstops in the league than I thought. I'm sure that all those teams that have good hitting shortstops and aren't in contention have problems beyond that position. But when you list the good-hitting shortstops on the good teams, and then go on to list all the good-hitting shortstops on the bad teams, too... it makes me think that going with a Florimon at that position is putting the team at a disadvantage.
  21. If the Twins don't go out and sign or trade for starters, De Vries would be the #3 starter in 2013 behind Diamond and Deduno. Remember, TR said the Twins won't be in the market for big time starters. And if De Vries is the 3rd best starter on the team, the Twins would need to get three better starters than him somehow to bump him out of the rotation. My guess is De Vries is in the rotation out of ST as the #4.
  22. I'm not sure why Gardy felt the need to put Doumit in LF. There are so many other options right now with the expanded rosters. Gardy could have put Doumit at C and a better hitter than Butera in LF if he wanted to put his optimal lineup on the field. Also... why is Revere back in right field? I get that Gardy wants to reward his veteran guy by giving Span back his position, but there's no reason Revere couldn't be put in left where he's a better fit now that there are other outfield options.... it's not like Revere's future is in right field anyway.
  23. He also had surgery earlier that offseason to remove a kidney stone.
  24. "Opposing the firing of Ron Gardenhire" isn't exactly the same thing as "wanting Ron Gardenhire to keep his job".
  25. Back surgery is why he was a month late to start the season in 2009.
