  1. Yeah, something like a 2 year $12 million deal sounds just about right. Good guy in the clubhouse, not going to be threatened by the emergence of new stars, still a fan favorite and a really nice weapon against lefties. Would love to see him get hot and help carry this team into September.
  2. Interesting the Gold Glove at two positions. I imagine that would be a nice feather in his HOF case, the kind of thing that some voters latch onto.
  3. Weird that the Twins have, in my mind, two of the borderline HOFers in Puckett and Bert. I'm still convinced Bert doesn't get in if he wasn't an announcer trumpeting his case while Puckett clearly got in with some nostalgia for a player struck down in their primes. It'd be nice to have a HOF who is considered borderline who actually deserves to be there. Go Johan! P.S. I can't wait to be having these discussions about Joe in 7-10 years.
  4. Santana should very clearly make the Hall. That Colon Cy Young will always burn me because it's what kept him from winning three in a row. Three in a row would be a surefire HOF argument. He'll still get in but I think it'll take 5-10 years for momentum to build.
  5. Yeah, they should ridden Santana one more inning. Especially with an offday Monday - he has an extra day of rest this next cycle.
  6. 1.) Because right and left have different meanings depending on if you're facing the prow or stern of the vessel. Too confusing to have it be "the right side as you're facing the front". Thus starboard and port, which don't change based on which way you're facing. Port was originally larboard but that was too close to starboard so they switched it. 2 and 3.) Knots are tied up to Nautical Miles. Nautical miles are used because they're measuring distance on a globe, constantly using longitude and latitude. A nautical mile is 1/60th of one degree. It's useful to have the distance of a mile match up with lines on the map. Knots comes from that as you'd have to say "Nautical miles per hour" which is bulky. Knots is way better. 4.) Fathoms were originally the distance between a man's outstretched arms. This was a useful way to measure distance in the days before tape measures and what not. It also was easy when working with ropes and cables at sea. Over time, they realized that the six foot fathom divided nicely into a nautical mile so they kept it. 5) The term sheet came from the sail as the Old English word for the corner of the sail where the rope attached was sheet. This differentiates ropes attached to sails from ropes attached to other things on and off a ship.
  7. Why is Friday TBD? Is Colon not able to pitch? Too many slow curves? Seems like the Twins are settling into Santana, Berrios, Colon, Gee and Gibson for now. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Mejia is ready to come back - gotta think Gee and Gibson are start to start and Colon is a few bad ones away from being replaced. I know Slegers had a good start but I don't see him replacing anyone for now. Nice to have Mejia and Slegers who you're at least a bit excited to see if they get an opportunity.
  8. How do you feel about Fenway? I'm sure players don't like the Monster but that doesn't make it terrible. I love a park with some history and some flair. The ivy is amazing, the way the ball flies out on a windy day is awesome -- it's a great park in a different way than San Fran or Pitt but every bit as great.
  9. Disagree. Wrigley and Fenway don't have modern amenities in the same way as modern parksbut both ballparks have a feel and a history that is amazing. The Alamo is a dump too but it's also not meant to be a Holiday Inn.
  10. I mean, I like a clumsy guy as well but that does burst my bubble.
  11. I have to say, I like this Sanchez guy for the White Sucks. The glasses are amazing and he's diving into first base down 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth for a team that doesn't have any reason to play that hard. Like a guy who competes that hard.
  12. Wow. That's not even seeing the glass half empty. It's throwing the glass at the wall.
  13. He's been trending down really hard in the past few years. Velocity down, BB rates up, K rates down. At this point the name is sexier than the performance. Seems like more of a back of the rotation type than a frontline starter. I look forward to beating up on him for years to come.
  14. 1) Eduardo Escobar is unlikely to remain a useful inexpensive player in two years (no Mauer means this has to be 2019). He's going to hit arbitration and start costing more. He's also always struck me as more of a utility guy than an every day guy - he's stretched at that point. 2) No faith in Vargas long term. Maybe I'll be wrong but I'd rather do a Mauer/lefty masher platoon. 3) I want Buxton hitting in the #3 spot. He's got too much extra base pop to be at the top of the rotation.
  15. Not in the NL. The second wildcard makes it so the first wildcard is truly wild. Love the second wildcard - one of the best innovations in baseball.
  16. See my post about lefty/righty splits vs. Giolito. Love getting more lefty at bats. Especially because I imagine that Adrianza is a better OF than Garver.
  17. I'm excited to face Giolito. His MiLB splits have righties with a .671 OPS and lefties with a .879 OPS. And that's the minors. THe Twins will send seven lefties to the plate and the two righties are the red hot Dozier and Buxton. We will need that with Gibson n the mound.
  18. No thread for tonight yet. I'm excited to face Giolito. His MILB splits have righties with a .671 OPS and lefties with a .879 OPS. And that's the minors. The Twins will likely send seven lefties to the plate, assuming that Vargas DH's. We will need that with Kyle Gibson on the mound. I love the Twins ability to throw tons of lefties in the lineup.
  19. Do we know Mejia will be on the DL? I've heard nothing saying he's out for the year. Most fantasy sites say that he'll be back at some point. I know Byung Ho would have to be added to the 40 but if the Twins have a spot, I think he'd be a nice addition.
  20. I mean, no one should get you excited as anything more than a role player. That's what the September call-ups are for - pinch running, defensive substitution, LOOGY, pinch hitter with pop, late inning sub in a blow-out game to rest a starter. Those are all useful guys who might be able to give the Twins a little something to get them over the hump. This is also unsubstantiated but I like young guys getting their MLB debuts this time of year. The season can drag and it adds a nice bit of excitement for the rest of the guys.
  21. I'd like to see Byung Ho come up when the Rochester season is over. Well-liked in the clubhouse and a bench bat with some pop. Same goes for Vargas (assuming Sano comes back around 9/1).
  22. Likely was on a bit of a pitch count seeing as he hasn't exactly been stretched out of late. that's why that outing is so good, I bet they only expected 4 innings. So is the rotation now Santana, Berrios, Colon, Gibson and Gee? With Gibson/Gee pitching for their job every time and Slegers and eventually Mejia waiting in the wings?
  23. I've been trolling for the Twins to sign Danny Valencia as the other half of 2018's 1B platoon. This only adds fuel to my fire. Mashes LH pitching, can play 3B and corner OF reasonably well and now is a GG talent at 1B :-)
  24. This is amazing and you're absolutely right on all points. I'm not a Joe West fan but man, he got jobbed on that one.
  25. Dozier isn't going to sign some small extension. He's never hit free agency and he will want to at 31, especially since his value is not tied to being a 2B (thought that obviously helps). He'll be looking for one of those 4 year deals with a ton of money (and more power to him, he deserves it). I'm down to sign a 1-2 year extension with him but naive enough to think that he'd be interested in that. Not a big fan of a longer deal. He's a very nice 2B but a fairly average DH. And between Gordon, Lewis, Palacios, Polanco and Vielma, there's a ton of middle infield depth coming up. And I'd like to start extending Buxton, Sano, Berrios etc. (we may regret not extending Buxton last offseason, he's getting more expensive by the day). Tough to see Dozier with the Twins past next year. Not sure I'd trade him this offseason - sometimes you just let a contract play out and hope for that career contract year. Dozier makes the Twins better in 2018 and then the young ones can take over.
