  1. I really like the concept of golf as a three man team game. Especially if two teams played at the same time and time was involved. You had your driver, your middle guy and your short guy. Driver in the box, middle guy halfway down the fairway and the putter close. The two drivers hit first and from there it's first a number of strokes thing but all ties are broken by who finished first. And you could have them have to switch roles every hole. This sport would be way better than actual golf.
  2. Yeah Gibson will get more time. And should. He's potential trade bait at the deadline if he has a nice year (not super optimistic but hopeful). Hughes is a guy I'd include on the list of guys who need to be worried. His weakened stuff may play better from the pen.
  3. He also hits lefty. The ideal twins 4th OF can hit from the right side of the plate. I know we all hate Danny Santana here but he's a pretty decent 25th man. Very good OF defense, adequate IF defense and he can steal a base and pinch run well. Switch hitter too if you need him to hit. The problem is not having him on the roster, it's how he's used. He shouldn't be starting anything but the occasional game unless there are injuries - Grossman is bad in the OF but he should spell guys out there. Santana should be a late inning pinch runner in every close game and a defensive sub for Grossman when he plays.
  4. 1.) We're talking about having a DH not a utility infielder. No one is saying "get rid of Escobar", just that having Escobar DH is ridiculous. It's Jason Tyner 2.0. Escobar's career OPS = .682, Grossman's = .723. Grossman's OPS vs. righties (his weak side) = .696. Escobar vs. righties = .659. You might as well use Grossman (who is a solid platoon partner but not a full-time DH and not useful against righties) than replace him with Escobar. If the question was "DH Sano and Escobar plays 3B vs DH Grossman and Sano plays 3B" I'd get your point but if we're talking DHs (which we are), it's insane. 2.) Palka is an interesting option no one talks about. He hit righties and lefties pretty evenly in the minors in 2014 and 2016 (though not in 2015 to be fair) and is a much better bat at 1B than Gimenez on days Mauer sits. And when the Twins play righties (70% of starters) they'd be able to DH Palka instead of Grossman, who slots much better into a DH-vs-lefties/bench bat role. Palka is a viable option besides Vargas/Park. He doesn't solve the lefties dilemma but that's only 30% of pitchers. Let's solve the 70% problem.
  5. I'm not sure the Twins have problems at shortstop. They have Polanco not looking awful at the MLB level and Gordon and Vielma in the upper minors looking like they have a good shot at being at worst major league regulars and perhaps even more (in Gordon). And Jermaine Palacios is a promising guy who might be able to stick at short. You can never have too many athletes but I would never draft a guy because we need a shortstop. I don't think we particularly do and I'd rather draft the guy who will have the most impact at the MLB level, regardless of position. If that's a CF, then we get a CF.
  6. As should small samples in April. Moving him down was smart but let's not give up on him.
  7. Outside of Palka, Vargas and Lewin Diaz, there's not a solid left-handed first base/DH prospect. Assuming Mauer hits similar to what he does now, there may be room for him on a small deal. Strictly platooning at DH/1B with someone and Sano (Sano playing every day)
  8. Ugh. I thought Twins Daily was a sanctuary city.
  9. And boom goes the dynamite. Sano on pace to double Bonds season record.
  10. If Sano and Polancao can be average, this could be a very nice defensive team.
  11. This lineup does not make me miss Jason Tyner DHing and batting 8th.
  12. Castro for MVP! Why isn't he batting cleanup?
  13. Vargas also hits much better as a RHB against LHP. For what it's worth, Park hit right handed pitching better than left handed pitching last year. It's a small sample (183 PA against righties, 62 AB against lefties) but them's the numbers.
  14. Yeah, I'm with bighat on this one. I'm much more excited about Rosario. I think Kepler got moved up too quickly and I see his struggles from last year continuing this spring. He's just raw for the level and I think he'll be back and forth between AAA and the majors this year. He's still got an insanely bright future and I think he'll be okay but he's really really raw.
  15. Excited about Breslow. He may wash out but he seems like a guy you could trade for something decent at the deadline if he has a nice year. There's always a market for LH relievers and Breslow has "playoff experience" and "veteran savvy." Might get an okay prospect and make way for a younger guy.
  16. My hope for the health front is that Sano is only playing at 3B against right handed starters. When the Twins (hopefully) rest Mauer against most lefties, I hope they take advantage of the situation and put Sano at DH/1B and get Escobar some time at SS/3B. It'll make the defense better and help preserve Sano's health. I'm hopeful for a bigger year from Sano. He should have much better protection behind him and batters on in front of him. Hopefully get a few more fastballs over the plate.
  17. I mean, Duffey is still a young guy, he's only 26 to Mejia's almost 24. It's not like they put Vogelsong in the rotation over young guys. Duffey isn't eligible for arbitration for two more years, he wouldn't be picking an old guy with no future. And I'm not sure which young guy should have made it over Danny Santana. Santana is 26 and is younger than Adrianza, JB Schuck and Vargas (albeit by three months), the other guys who could have taken that last spot. There's no young guy Santana is blocking. The Twins don't have anyone young who they want to be the 25th man - we all want Vielma, Garver and Granite to be playing every day and working on their game, not languishing as a backup who starts once every week or two and gets a few late innings every once in awhile. I'd have liked to have seen Wimmers over Haley (I still hold some hope for Tonkin, I never wanna give up early on a guy with his tools) but get wanting to hold onto a guy with Haley's upside. Wimmers will be first one up if anyone gets hurt/sucks. Chargois can use a few months in the minors before forcing his way onto the team. Not too worried about him. Unlikely as it may seem, Belisle, Breslow and Kintzler may be worth something at the deadline. I'm okay with keeping them - I just want a short leash if one of them goes Jepsen's way.
  18. Oh man, Vogelsong. The panicked fretting on TD was amazing. I almost miss it.
  19. I hope this happens but no way Mauer bats 4th even if he hits 18 bombs. Much better choices in Sano, Vargas etc. Mauer in your scenario is the ideal #2 or #3 hitter. Huge OBP, pop. I hope this happens more than almost anything.
  20. Mauer's first pitch strike % (60.1%) is right about league average (59.5%). So taking that first pitch doesn't appear to be hurting him much (and perhaps helping him and his teammates see more of pitchers). Just a thought.
  21. I've been saying the BABIP all off-season. I'm glad it wasn't a figment of my imagination.
  22. This is more like it. Unfettered enthusiasm with little basis in reality. That's March baseball talk.
