The consequence of failure is getting let go. Failure produces humility & meekness, knowing you're not invincible & know it all. Meekness is knowing that you don't know it all, this is the point where you can start learning. If there are no consequences for failure, you continue to think you are invincible & think you know it all. Blocking the way to really learn & grow, that there might be a better way than his own. The best thing for Falvey is to learn meekness by suffering the consequences of his mistakes by being fired.

The way the market sits, big bats are expensive. So why not focus on drafting & developing them? You may ask, isn't that what they have been trying to do? Yes, they have, but they haven't succeeded. The last 2 years, they have had qualified players in house to work their magic at 1B but they have wasted it on 1-year FAs. This year again, I'd prefer they go in house, Fedco, Lewis, 0r even Wallner or Larnach than going out house.

Frankly, I'm sick & tired of Falvey-type trade suggestions. Trades where it is greatly advantageous to the opposing team, yet on our return, though it may look good on paper to some with hyped-up prospects, but in reality, they never come to fruition. They bloat our system with AAAA, unproven, undeveloped, redundant players that don't fill our immediate needs. For the Twins to get what they need in a Ryan trade, they may need to be creative. Though Falvey likes to use this word, he has no understanding of what it means.

I know you were kidding, but only if it were true! I can't fathom any Twins fan that wouldn't be elated over the possibility of replacing a weird analytical nerd that has no grasp of reality for a down-to-earth, baseball-smart former catcher POBO with the right perspective on analytics. But evidently there is.

I know where you're coming from, Cody, but w/o a legit closer, it'll make it very difficult to establish a BP. Maybe at the end of the season, we can start seeing daylight. It'd be much more feasible with Varland. Not crazy about the remnant from last year, But I could get excited about the future possibility from Prielipp, Raya, & Canterino. They make much more sense in the BP than Duran was. I agree that Fiesta makes more sense in the BP. At this point, they have to keep Pablo, Ryan, & Ober on our rotation & not trade them. SWR is starting to establish himself as a veteran but other unproven young SPs, IMO, should be rotating as a spot starter & long relief. I really like a Thielbar, Rogers or Coulume as a veteran #1 LHRP to anchor the BP.

Grading the Twins' Hiring of Derek Shelton
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Being familiar doesn't mean Baldelli 2,0. Shelton was a good balance with Baldelli in '19 & Baldelli stated that he leaned heavily on Shelton. Shelton was far down on my list, but IMO as far as managers go, Shelton is fine. A manager is only as good as the staff he brings with him. If they hire LaTroy Hawkins as BP coach, Nellie Cruz as hitting/ 1B coach, Tori Hunter as OF/ 3B coach & Charlie Greene as the bench coach. Shelton & Greene were both catchers & Green was the MIL development/ catching coach, so I'm sure they can find a super catching coach. I like to give grace to people, so I'll give him a B grade. But he could end up with an A or an F, depending on his staff. But with Falvey as POBO, I doubt that Falvey will trade for needed pieces that'll make Shelton's job that much harder (with catching & BP in a mess), so I'd predict a grade on the team he'll manage no higher than C, not competing for the postseason. That should have no bearing on who Shelton is as a manager, only on Falvey. -
Ownership & Baldelli might have some blame. But the responsibility & most of the blame fall squarely on Falvey's shoulders.
-
Yeah, I don't share the same optimism with our farm in general as Shelton stated. But he has to be optimistic, that's part of the job. Maybe rebuild is a bad word for managers to use, but when you sell off 40% of the roster, it's a rebuild. If they trade Ryan & or Lopez, it'll be a full-blown rebuild. But Sheldon gave the right answers, to focus on development, details, fundamentals & communication. Putting importance on coaches who have MLB experience to better help, & instruct struggling young players. This is where the Twins have failed & should have been done years ago. At least Tingler, Watkins, Conger & by default the hitting coach should be fired. My hope is that Sheldon, with Zoll's help, would be able to find good coaches who are able to implement these virtues. Sheldon has embraced former baseball-smart Twins, whom I believe he is willing to draw from.

Ty France Wins Gold Glove At First Base
Doctor Gast replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Congratulations to France! MN stuck with 1 yr. FAs Santana & France. Why didn't we work that magic with one of our own & have something to build off of? -
"Throwing 100 miles an hour, RPMs and vertical break—we’re so caught up in them,” Hawkins said. “We forget there’s a human element to it, the mental part of the game.” Bingo! We are so caught up in analytics that we totally miss the human element, Many analytical nerds are lost if they can't find what they want on a spreadsheet. Experience adds so much when players are struggling. LaTroy has been my choice for BP coach since the beginning.

I don't want to trade any of these players. Not because I think we can compete, but because #1- Falvey won't get anyone that can really impact the Twins any time soon or fit our real needs. If Falvey is set to sell, other teams will outwait him for a good deal on their part. #2- Our farm is bloated with AAAA, unproven, undeveloped & redundant players. #3- Our young players need mentors to get a proper footing under themselves; otherwise, we become the CWS. Even if Ryan wants to be traded, I wouldn't trade him under these circumstances. I especially wouldn't sell low on Pablo. I really don't want to trade Jeffers because our catching is a mess. But he makes the most sense to trade because what people like to ignore is that Boras is his agent, Boras doesn't do extensions so more than likely he's gone after this year. So instead of losing him for nothing, they should get something for him. If Jeffers wants an extension, again, Boras is his agent; it'd be ridiculously high.

Kyle DeBarge's Glove Proves Golden
Doctor Gast replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
You missed the point. -
Fans & players have heard for years, don't look at the results, trust the process. Falvey absolutely didn't want to fire Baldelli because he was the face of that process. After years of no results, we have to look at the analytical process (of hitting a ton of HRs when they don't count, SOs offensively when it matters, defense, fundamentals, clutch hitting don't matter) & come to the conclusion that the process is faulty. But Falvey has resisted with all his might. The reason that Baldelli was fired was none of that. He was fired because the Pohlads weren't selling tickets & Falvey was told to solve the problem. Through the years, Falvey has used all the excuses in the book & bloodied the field with sacrificial lambs. Instead of solving the problem by taking full responsibility & removing himself, He decided to sacrifice his most prized lamb, Baldelli. It was obvious to many that this was most likely going to happen. Again, this weak show of action will do nothing to change the sale of tickets, because, unlike the Pohlads, the fans aren't fooled. When ticket sales reach new all-time lows, will the Pohlads finally wake up? How deep will that hole get before they wake up & seek a better source of their information rather than Falvey?

Kyle DeBarge's Glove Proves Golden
Doctor Gast replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Congratulations to DeBarge! He's one prospect that we don't hear much about. Why is that? He doesn't hit HRs. Defense isn't sexy to Falvey. But that's where we are really hurting. A SS or 2Bman who has a lot of range, good instincts, good glove & a 2Bman that has a good DP pivot is essential. But no, it's their bat that counts! The shift ban has been intact for years. So why do the Twins still think that they can still hide bad gloves at 2B, therefore? We want our DHs, 1Bmen & cOfers to go crazy in driving in runs, especially in the clutch. Why aren't we more critical about their bats? We have to focus on developing our bats there & not worry that up the middle has to carry the load offensively. That said, I believe that DeBarge can carry his weight offensively. -
In defensive catching, familiarity is always the best choice. Thinking about picking up a catcher at the deadline or even during the offseason isn't a good idea; it takes a long time to get acquainted with the pitching. I was in favor of extending Vazquez last off-season to a more reasonable contract. The problem shouldn't be that our defensive catcher isn't hitting (even though Vazquez has hit some clutch hits). The focus should be that our less premium position players aren't contributing enough, especially RF, 1B & DH. Jeffers isn't our catcher of the future, so signing him to an expensive extension shouldn't be out of the question. The last several years, the Twins should have focused on getting that catcher of the future, but have failed to do so, so this year & beyond will be a mess.
-
Development isn't throwing raw players into the MLB, playing full-time, for the whole season & expect them to thrive. They need to be instructed, managed properly (meaning placed in their best position, & not overextend phyically) in other words, knowing what their gift is at & then encourage them to maximize that gift. PIT did a great job in developing Endy, but he got seriously hurt, Bart hardly played for SF, so when he got a chance & maybe different instruction at PIT in '24, he blossomed. He went from a reject to starting catcher, so in '25 from hardly playing to playing full-time, every day catcher; IMO. is a big jump for a player to make in one year, is it no wonder he wears down. IMO, Henry could just be a dudd. A hitting catcher that can't hit. I don't know how much Shelton is allowed to manage or how much free rein he has to select the coaches to instruct our players even if he has good ideas. I'm willing to give him a chance.

I was elated. There were so many memories. What stuck out to me the most was strange in that STL players were doing voodoo against the Twins & my friends & I came against it. Pohlad knew people who knew what they were doing, which was evident when he hired the young Andy MacPhail. Back in the Twinkies ERA, IMO, the Twins were never going anywhere under Griffin. It took a complete change. A change is now in order.

Does Anyone Want to Come Here?
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've stated this for years, we need to try to draw Charlie Greene (BP coach) from MIL. He'd make an excellent Bench coach. He's a son of a college coach, played some MLB at catcher, Been a big part of the MIL's great catching development, he was head of the team's development & now is the Brewers' BP coach. He could eventually become a great MLB manager. He could help the Twins on many levels. Could he be open for a promotion & a shot at the future manager spot? Could Tori, La Troy & Nelly be open for the OF/3B coach, BP coach & hitting/1B coach jobs? They'd be great assets. If the Twins ever want to be competitive again with Falvey, they need to tell Falvey to take a vacation & clean house with the coaching staff. -
Does Anyone Want to Come Here?
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Falvey said he wants to improve development & fundamentals (he must have heard it somewhere & thought that it was something good to say), but IMO, he has no idea how to do it if it doesn't include analytics. But that is exactly what we need. 1st of all, improve our in house players & those in other teams that aren't given a chance or the right instruction they need. We can't develop our own catchers; how can we expect to develop others who are looking for a chance? Once we finally find someone who really knows what he's doing, establish fundamentals & development. Then we can start to move ahead. If not, forget about it. -
"this team was not afraid of big moves, such as trading Luis Arraez for Pablo Lopez or shipping out then-closer Taylor Rogers the day before Opening Day." The big moves that turned out well were no-brainers that other FOs initiated, like the Arraez/Lopez trade (you can't have enough pitching) that you can't count on & the bonehead ones, like the Rogers one (counting on Duffy & Pagan for closing duties). Mainly picking up over-priced 1-yr. FAs in positions we don't need & ignoring the positions that need supporting. Also you can't fault Shelton for pulling SPs, because the whole league is doing that. That's where the league is going to head off the growing epidemic of pitching arm injuries. IMO, Shelton is different than Baldelli but what they share is the same problem & that's Falvey*. Shelton should have free rein to select his staff & manage the team but that's not going to happen. He was limited in PIT by the owners & here he'll be more limited by Falvey. *Falvey lack of ability to provide needed players by- selecting coaches that can develop players, recognizing player potential, needs & initiate essential trades to fill those needs. Plus his weird analytical philosophies.
