  1. Good luck to Carson.
  2. Please explain why anyone would worry about Buxton being traded. He hasn't demanded a trade and Falvey is extremely risk adverse. My guess is that the odds are about the same as the Mets winning Draft Pick #1. I commented above that it would be good for Byron to have the joy of playing in a World Series and excelling on the national stage, but I have never believed there was any chance whatsoever of him being traded. If he absolutely comes out and demands a trade, that would change the calculus. Does that seem like something Buck would do? I doubt it. Team USA will have to be Buxton's playoff run.
  3. Cody, you must have missed the news. The Twins have new investors and are now rich. The club is all in, Falvey likes the roster. In a way, in an attempt to wish good things for the player, I wish Byron Buxton could play in the World Series. He has had a lifetime of injuries followed by rehab and it would be a treat to see him play well in the post season for the Dodgers.
  4. Do both - trade a starting pitcher and trade for a starting pitcher. i would target Jared Jones and Edward Cabrera.
  5. The Twins should just let Jeffers play out his last year as a Twin this year. If they MUST trade him, which they shouldn't have to, try to get Tre' Morgan from Tampa Bay. For catching, use Noah Cardenas, maybe pick up (trade) Ben Rortvedt from the Reds.
  6. The Rule 5 picks have almost always been pitchers. I would be mildly surprised if either of Kyler Fedko or Ka'lai Rosario were picked up by a team. It would not surprise me if either of C. J. Culpepper or Jose Olivares wind up being picked. The decision to keep a number (easily 4 guys) of Twins on the 40 person roster who will never be given a run in the organization under any circumstances is strange because it exposes players who could be protected. Still, I don't expect any Twins to be selected in the Rule 5, but there are always surprises. Once a team picks a player in the Rule 5 draft there are often conversations that include trades so that the team making the pick can slide the chosen player into their system in late March.
  7. If you can figure out what the front office is doing about anything, please pass it along.
  8. The Twins dumped their relievers and shortstop to save around $30M. If the goal was to trim the roster payroll below $110M, how does the front office then turn and sign a guy for $13-15M? Something in past practices predicts a contract offered to someone for $2-5M. The presser will include comments about how excited, etc. If I'm being really optimistic, I hope the Twins trade for Yandy Diaz or Tre' Morgan from the Rays. That said, sign me up for a Ryan O'Hearn at 2/$26M or Jorge Polanco at 3/$42M if the consensus says the Twins suddenly are spending money. Might as well add He-Seong Kim at 2/$30M and Robert Suarez at 3/$45M too.
  9. The Twins situation with catchers is rather remarkable. While some people seem to understand how this front office proceeds with player development, I'm in the dark, totally. The trade of Duran for Tait was such an outlier, it seemed like the thinking went "Holy crap we don't have any catchers, let's trade our closer for a catcher who could be good in 2028 or 2030." Dombrowski was surprised and pleased. Different people will see things differently, nothing new there. I'm with A. J. Preller in keeping inexpensive relief pitchers as long as possible. Many others suggest a bullpen is really easy to put together. I guess we shall see. The Twins will lose Ryan Jeffers to free agency unless they pay him big bucks. Since the Twins just finished dumping players for salary relief, the immediate turn around in spending seems completely unlikely. Yet, any attempts to understand this ownership and front office group are bound to fail, so we just wait and watch. As far as the post on trading Ryan Jeffers goes, I cannot fathom any player worth considering from the Phillies system that Dombrowski/Fuld would actually send to Minnesota. Maybe the Twins could offer Jeffers and someone like Marco Raya or Kyle DeBarge to Tampa Bay for Tre' Morgan. Morgan will have a tough time pushing aside Yandy Diaz, Aranda, and Isaac. Then again, Morgan is not Falvey's type because his value is as a hitter and fielder with less than ideal power. As far as catcher to fill, there must be a few guys in the minor leagues like Noah Cardenas who can catch and OPS around .600. If the pitchers are happy with the catchers, I'm content.
  10. Are you saying the Twins cannot afford $103M payroll? Maybe that is correct. Oh crap. Again off topic. Sorry, no more. I like shortstops at #3.
  11. I'm not complaining or irritated. I just don't see a $103M payroll as excessive. I didn't see the point. It is what it is. The Twins are a stretch to win 75 games. They aren't going after any elite starting pitchers. I didn't suggest signing a reliever. The guys they had were on decently fair contracts. If relievers are found everywhere, fine. Let the Twins find them. I'm ok with that. We are off topic. Sorry. BPA.
  12. I guess I never saw the benefit but I will wait to see how the next season plays out. The current payroll sits at $93M and adding Jax and Duran makes it $103M. I guess anything over $100M is a deal breaker. Varland? That was a curious decision. People are suggesting relief pitchers are fungible and easily replaced and yet teams are paying guys less capable anywhere from $10-20M per year on extended contracts. Are the other teams all wrong? The Draft? Take the best, most athletic player available.
  13. What I heard was exactly what was stated the last two offseasons. It's a threepeat. Did I miss something? Am I wrong?
  14. It is water over the dam and I'm not furious or anything close. I'm just curious why the Twins were going to trade Duran or Jax. Why?
  15. Baldelli never seemed like he made his own decisions. Naturally, I have nothing to base that on except for the style of play we witnessed from mid August to the end of the year which was in direct contrast to all previous play. The Dodgers are an exceptionally well run organization and bringing Rocco aboard says plenty. I like Shelton and will be curious to see how the Twins play in April.
  16. Lawler has two middle infielders, Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo who are both superstars in his way. His appearances have been extremely sporadic with 108 PA, never having regular duty. Vientos has 1,191 PA. Casas has 952 PA. Acuna even has 233 PA and was a regular for a stretch. I don't think the players are comparable. I don't really care for 3 of the 4 for various reasons. However, since I have been promoting the acquisition of Lawler there is zero objectivity on my part and I'll agree there is a gamble in trading for Lawler. The Twins need to take a few gambles.
  17. Joe Ryan would likely sign a team friendly extension with San Francisco. He would be a huge pickup for the Giants. Despite how highly Bryce Eldridge is rated, I think the Twins would have to require an additional big prospect - Josuar Gonzalez. That trade is a total gamble on the part of the Twins but could potentially pay off. There is nothing secure about either of those two highly thought of prospects.
  18. Connelly Early would have been a fine addition to Jarren Duran in any trade with the Red Sox. If Boston intends to win the AL East they will need to sign Alonso and Bregman and they still might fall short due to their less than stellar pitching. Expect a ton of angst in New England.
  19. Appreciate your frustration but just getting rid of Ryan Jeffers without anyone to take his place is a bit of biting your nose off to spite your face or whatever that saying is. Falvey & Sons were hired in the first week of 2016. He is more than 2 months into his 10th year guiding the Twins. It really is incredible. There is a real bromance between DK and the Pohlad fellas. My guess is that Falvey is a really nice guy. I cannot think of a single other reason he would still be employed. Byron Buxton is the sole legitimately established position player on the Twins roster. He is also the last remaining player from before Falvey arrived. Not a single player drafted and developed by the current regime has made even one All Star Game. This has to be a record for any POBO/GM for a 10 year period. So the Twins have to keep Ryan Jeffers no matter what happens because he is almost certainly the last and only hope for Derek Falvey's career as 2026 will be his last year in baseball.
  20. This is what came to my mind. Related - the Twins need to initiate conversations on a number of players. There are possibilities out there and i think that the WAS-SEa trade is a good example. Can the Twins front office actually bring people to their table or are they just mingling? i was mystified why Falvey would issue any statement on trades or holding players. The current roster is not bristling with talent that screams World Series title. I mean the Dodgers say we are only looking at a few areas and feel good about only needing a few pieces. They don't say, we are set.
  21. Sounds like the Twins are in need of a financial analyst. Too bad I'm retired, I could easily fix their books for $100K per year and four tickets on the field. Save them millions and millions, maybe $500+M.
