  1. The sad part is, that after multiple more years of 90+ losses and epic mismanagement, the Twins front office will still have ardent defenders. It's just one of those aspects of fandom I guess.
  2. A bit embarassing? It's hugely embarassing, except it's the Twins, so no one really cares. Trees falling in the forest, and all that.
  3. The roster has been horribly mismanaged in a way that should never happen in MLB. Yet, there is zero accountability. I don't know what specifically needs to happen, but I know the current management system isn't working.
  4. The Twins organization is a joke. There's really nothing else to say. It doesn't matter how much young talent is in the system - this club will find a way to blow it, whatever it takes.
  5. It's all part of the same issue. Going into the season with huge question marks and zero depth at key positions. Horrific roster management during the season, whether it's having no bench, waiting too long to DL injured players, etc. The Twins are going to have an awful hard time becoming legitimate contenders if they can't run the organization with even a bare minimum level of competency.
  6. I don't know and neither do you. Perhaps his offensive improvement has made his defensive limitations easier to live with. But if he was a natural, pure SS, he would have played there all along. If you read Baseball America's actual reports, rather than taking a few words out of context, maybe you would pick up on that.
  7. The Twins know infinitely more about Polanco than you, and clearly they've had concerns with his ability to play SS. They weren't playing him at 2B because he was too good for SS.
  8. Polanco "was a defensive-oriented shortstop." As in, when the Twins signed him, years ago. He has spent most of time until now at 2B for a reason.
  9. One interesting thing about Hughes that surprises me - he has a very small L/R platoon split in his career. The absence of a quality change-up led me to suppose he got hit harder by lefties, but until just now I never looked at the numbers. It will be interesting to see if he can keep his walks down. Right now he's 9th out of 108 qualified pitchers in walk rate. I wouldn't mind seeing Pino as a long-reliever but there's a reason he's 30 years old, has been in 4 organizations, and never seen the Majors. He's just a AAAA guy on a hot streak.
  10. Colabello is a unique case who also is nominally able to play the outfield, which Vargas could not do under any circumstances. I hope Vargas continues to hit but he won't be in Minnesota before September (and quite possibly then either) unless half the roster hits the DL at the same time. Just not happening.
  11. I meant the 25 man obviously. The Twins have options at DH including Pinto, Willingham, Arcia, Colabello, with Parmelee hitting at AAA. Vargas' walk rate has fluctuated over his career so it's not really a surprise that he's taking BBs. He is striking out less, but in a small sample, with a low BABIP. His RC+ by year and level- 2009 R-: 134 2010 R-: 162 2011 R : 132 2012 A : 180 2013 A+: 130 2014 AA: 156
  12. He's no David Ortiz, but I do like him as a prospect. Not that there's room on the current roster...
  13. The advantage of Meyer over Pelfrey/Correia is that, even if Meyer struggles, it could be a learning experience that pays off in the future (something that could be said of Gibson's 2013). But he also has present-day upside. The fact he threw so few innings last year does worry me though, so far as making him a fixture in Minnesota.
  14. The value of the various possible outcomes has long since been established by linear weights and its descendants (including wOBA). It is only called "wOBA" because it is expressed in terms comparable to on-base percentage; walks aren't treated any differently than in other linear weight measures. They are clearly less valuable than a single, and by a decent amount. However, both a walk and a hit avoid the same negative value of an out.
  15. I know someone else remarked on this - but wow. In the long and sundry history of the internet, this might be the least accurate statement ever made.
  16. The good news is, somehow Burton didn't blow it. The bad news is, he certainly will the next time.
  17. My exact quote (bold added): "This has been looked at various times and most top prospects have no impact on attendance." Another quote from this page: "Buxton and Sano are on an entirely different level than Meyer hype-wise, and I think would result in initial bumps, albeit with relatively rapid tapering." Please do not bother responding to my posts if you aren't even reading them.
  18. Come on. There is absolutely no comparison in terms of hype. I live in the DC area - people who don't follow baseball at all knew about Strasburg before he debuted. He was more well known than almost the entire existing Nats team. Guys like him are obvious exceptions and Meyer has not gotten anything remotely like that level of attention. Posters here are not representative of the average fan.
  19. There is no evidence that Meyer is sufficiently hyped/well known to make a difference. This has been looked at various times and most top prospects have no impact on attendance. Buxton and Sano are on an entirely different level than Meyer hype-wise, and I think would result in initial bumps, albeit with relatively rapid tapering.
  20. How soon we forget, Kyle Gibson debuted just last year, at home? He pitched on a Saturday. The prior home Saturday: 35,017 (Deduno) Gibson's debut: 36,881 Next home Saturday: 38,626 (Correia) Also, teams are smarter now than 30+ years ago.
  21. The team isn't "in contention" and Meyer would have no effect on ticket sales. Besides which no MLB franchise would handle a prized prospect on that basis, ever. Florimon will be the first to go, no doubt. It's bizarre that he was Plan A to begin with- the only explanation aside from sheer gross incompetence is that the Twins tried but failed to replace him. Of course, the internal options are pretty bad. So far as Pelfrey, the Twins made an unforced, $12 million error in resigning him and the only mildly surprising part is that in blew up in their faces immediately. They really deserve the difficulties they're facing here, ditto for Florimon. Bad decisions shouldn't be rewarded.
  22. Right now the Twins are scoring 5.5 runs per game. The Fangraphs projection based on Zips & Steamer was for around 4.0 per game. The MLB average will probably wind up around 4.25 per game. The gap between expected & actual runs allowed is much smaller - around 5.2 so far compared to 4.7 projected. So while the offense will likely outperform expectations, there is still a lot of regression ahead. The pitching though was expected to be bad and has just been somewhat worse. There will be some positive regression there, but the numbers still don't add up to a .500 team.
  23. I'd give credit to the players who are performing well. But regardless, it's still very, very early.
  24. Taylor Rogers is also on the "best of" list. So what? That has as more to do with other arms in the system than anything. Is there a scouting report or video somewhere that talks about this great changeup that nonetheless wasn't enough to keep AA hitters from frequently bashing him?
