  1. Pizza Pit For the Loss: Over his last six starts, Clevinger has a 1.69 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings. Yikes. Over Smelzer's last game he has a 0.00 ERA. Over his last 11 innings he has a 0.82 ERA. For the season Bieber's ERA is 3.31. Smeltzer's is 2.28. Just sayin.
  2. Huge series but the two extreme outcomes would still leave us with a pennant race. If we got swept I would not throw in the towel. If we sweep I would not write Cleveland off.
  3. This reminds me of when I am golfing and say I am sick of bogies only to start making double and triple bogies. Dyson has already had a pretty big impact, just not the kind we wanted. I digress. From the point both are healthy and saying greater impact in a positive way, I would take that bet. Dyson has a two year history of being a really good reliever.
  4. Mets and Twins relied way more on Blyleven and Gooden to win pennants than these Twins. Who cares what age he is? When thinking of this team at the beginning of the year I was relying on him being a starter for the Twins by August. I have no problem relying on him to come in relief.
  5. Seriously? Berrios last 10 starts were 5 starts in June with an ERA of 2.06 and 5 starts in July with an ERA of 2.43. Game 1 gave up 1 earned run in an 8.2 win over Cleveland. Game 2 gave up 1 run in 7 innings to Seattle. Game 3 gave up 1 run in 8 innings in a 2-0 loss to Boston. Game 4 gave up 2 runs in 7 innings to KC Game 5 gave up 3 runs in 7+ innings to Chicago. His next 2 outings were so so and in his last 14 innings before tonight he gave up 2 runs. The record reflects either the Twins not scoring or the bullpen giving up runs after he left. He had a bad outing tonight. So what? He has pitched great for us. Saying he lost 7 games himself is absurd.
  6. I think very much a non issue. I don;t know how it could be called classy but don't know how any teammates can have an issue with it either. Watch the pitcher himself. He knew it was gone immediately and only turned to look to see how far.
  7. I think it would be premature to write it down in ink but have no problem putting it in pencil. Not above AA but I don't think he has that much more to prove if they deem him to be back to where he was before the 2 month layoff. I don't have a problem relying on rookies. Of course some need that first stint to get their feet wet but not everyone. Neshek and Liriano came in as rookies in the middle of a pennant race and were the difference. I don't think Graterol equates to Romero or May. 100mph with control seems to play pretty well everywhere.
  8. "Brusdar Graterol continued his comeback by making his second appearance in the GCL. He faced the minimum in the first inning as he allowed a single and then erased it on a double play. He was able to hit over 100 mph again. In his second inning, the first batter flew out to center. Then he struck out each of the next two batters on three pitches and they were all swinging strikes. Would the Twins consider adding him to the bullpen for the stretch run?"....Why wouldn't they?
  9. I've been wondering about that. He's pitched once in the last 10 games and that one was scoreless.
  10. I just laugh. The guy we already had pitches a scoreless 10th. Another guy we already had pitched a scoreless 11th. If we didn't have Romo and Dyson maybe Rogers isn't used last night. After all Poppen was throwing strikes and striking guys out. So if we don't make moves to improve our bullpen we might already have another win. Its not just about who gives up runs and how many its about when. A guy that has a 4 ERA that pitches one inning at a time gives up 1 more run every 9 appearances than the guy with a 3 ERA. As we just saw the guy that gives up the 4 runs every 9 innings might not cost us a game in 9 appearances whereas the guy that gives up 3 might cost us. Its why I don't think this bullpen has cost us the multiple games everyone thinks it has. Its been ugly but effective for the most part. Everyone gives up runs. Ron Davis might have gotten Kirk Gibson out when HOFer Dennis Eckersley did not. Dyson and Romo will likely pay off but everyone gives up runs.
  11. I think they were asking for Kepler, Rogers, Arraez and Garver. I am kidding but if you think about it that could easily have been the package.
  12. Yep. At one point Buxton, Sano Berrios dipped in their rankings also. When they dip isn't the time to trade them, unless you think they will dip further. The guys we could have traded them for in the past might have been Archer and Darvish. Of course they can dip further and never pan out just like free agents and trade acquisitions can turn out great. There is tons of anecdotal evidence for making moves and for not making moves... This building up of super teams is kind of annoying to me. When KC got to their WS I was excited and happy for them. Same thing with Houston their first time. Now if they win it all I will yawn and say "good for you". I think if we had got Verlander, Greinke and Cole and given up all our prospects I think I might have had a bit of that same reaction. Maybe I just like underdogs. This just seems like overkill.. I hope Houston doesn't win, except tonight.
  13. Kennedy was my baseline not really of what I wanted them to do but what I thought they would do. I would rather have Kennedy that Romo but I would rather have Dyson that Kennedy so I am pretty happy with the result.
  14. I was fine with leaving him in. All 4 of those guys earned their way on base. #1 rule with that kind of lead is to make them earn it by not walking guys and that is what Poppen did. He had a clean 8th inning and struck out 2 of the 3. He also struck out the first guy after the slam so its not like he didn't have stuff. He could have finished the igame but I think Rogers was warmed up anyway so why not bring him in.
  15. Its worse for me. My secretary went to Las Vegas and I told her to put $50 on the Twins to win it all. She misunderstood and put it on the game that day and we got smoked. Lost the $50 immediately and the chance to win over $1500.
  16. Whoops. Was talking about the 2014 wild card Royals that barely won the wild card game and won 8 straight to get to the WS where they went 3-4. They were 9th in the AL in scoring and dead last in the major leagues in home runs hit. That was the team I was talking about and no one was giving them much chance. Point being you can win in a large variety of ways. Power, speed, patience, starting pitching, relief pitching. Mostly its about getting hot. I can easily imagine our rotation giving us quality starts and bullpen holding leads and our offense scoring a lot of runs against anyone. Of course, I can imagine them getting swept. Its part of the game. Are they going to win it all? Probably not. Thats actually true of every team. Can they win it? Of course they can.
  17. They also had great defense. But they also had mediocre starting pitching and no power. They were 1 out away from being 0-1 in the playoffs because they were that close to losing the wild card play in game. They also had guts enough to say we don't care if other teams are considered better than us. We are going to battle anyway. Also, like pretty much every WS winner they got hot at the right time and had some luck.
  18. Throwing in the towel already? Underdogs win often enough and they are more fun to watch when they do. For example, in the last 25 years wild card teams have gone to the world series 12 times and won 6 times. 1987 Twins and 1991 Twins were something like 130-1 against winning it all. I am guessing adding a couple bullpen arms gets the Twins from 15-1 against down to 13-1 against. In other words these Twins are 10 times more likely to win the World Series than the other two Twins teams that actually did win it. Ok, I am playing a little loose with the numbers and we are getting way ahead of ourselves. Make the playoffs first. I am fine with our chances once we get there. Afraid of Greinke? The guy is great but he is 3-4 in the playoffs and has a 4.04 ERA. Well, that's against great teams right? Against the Twins he is 5-9 with a 4.64 ERA.
  19. I would be a bit disappointed. I think Kennedy is kind of the baseline. I would like Lynn but don't know how much it would cost. Thing is, all these possible acquisitions move the needle incrementally not monumentally. Would Giles or Kennedy have avoided the Yankee loss? Possibly., and maybe another game but maybe they implode a different game where the guy we had got out of it. The net over time is maybe a game, maybe two, maybe -1. Maybe that difference gives us a 5% better chance of making the playoffs. Maybe that difference gains us 2% better chance in the playoffs. Its possible not making a move is what gets us a World Series and its possible making three great moves gets us swept in the first round, but Its all about percentages and if Kennedy moves the needle at all and money was the reason for not getting him, yes I will be disappointed.
  20. Yes the Indians got better offensively but Bauer pitched over 156 innings. Next guy has pitched 140 innings and no one after that has pitched over 65 innings. They are going to miss their quality innings eater.
  21. Especially nice to see Odorizzi with a strong start. Cleveland offense got quite a bit better I think but they will miss Bauer. He gave them a lot of innings.
  22. Whoops. My prior response would have been better on this post. Twins were better than the A;s. Yankees were better than the Twins but not sweeping every game better. I don't know if luck is the right word. Twins were capable of doing better. I hope the Twins improve as well but I would rather have 6 years of 10% chance than three years of 20% chance. That's just theory. If the Twins can get Kennedy and all it costs is money and if they can get Thor or Lynn without it costing a big overpay, even if it is one of the top 2, in prospects I am all for it.
  23. We were 6-3 against the A's, had 96 wins on the year, home field advantage and Santana on the mound. Many national experts were picking the Twins to win it all. Ironically, the team that was way more likely to fold because they lost 3 in a row at home to the 100 loss Royals to lose the division ended up thumping the Yankees of all teams, sweeping the A's and then losing 4 games to 1 against the 82 win Cards. That season more than any other influence me to think that you want the best team going into the playoffs but the really, really important thing is to make the playoffs.
