I could see FSN giving up a half inning at most to a normal Joe. The feature would be sold... register at Cub Foods type thing. If they can monetize it... They will consider it.

What To Make Of Kennys Vargas
Riverbrian replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As long as the ball continues to leave his bat at 471 MPH... Optimism is easy. -
The last thing I want to do is tear down Joe. His swing is still as sweet as they come. But... I just can't agree with "very very well" However... I don't want to work very hard tearing him down to support my points. He's one of us... I'd much rather have his back. If Molitor wants to rest Joe to keep him strong... I'm ok with that. It's a new year and I want to see what it brings. If something ain't right with Joe in 2017... I'm hoping that Molitor has the guts to try someone/something else for awhile A little less toleration. Not just Joe... The Rotation... The Pen... The 40 Man Roster.

HYPOTHETICAL: How much is the Twins franchise worth?
Riverbrian replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
1.6 Billion is the price you pay when you to try to convince someone who wasn't planning on selling to actually sell. -
This is one of my largest concerns. When Paul Molitor basically publicly apologized to Brian Dozier for a one game benching despite his lengthy obvious for all to see struggles. It suggests to me a sense of entitlement is being issued to the experienced or pre-selected. It also suggests to me a willingness tolerate sub-par play for the sake of... I don't know... I have no idea why a manager would need to be apologetic to a veteran for not putting him the lineup when he isn't performing. Until Molitor shows a willingness to be as intolerant of veteran average performance as he is with youthful average performance... I fear that nothing will change. We all watched the ship go down last year with very little adjustment to stop the sinking. So yeah... I agree with you... hopefully the new front office will recognize this.

When I read between the lines... this is what I assume: I don't think vet presence means mentoring in this case. I think vet presence means less mistakes made. I think vet presence means someone doesn't trust young players and is more comfortable with a player who has been through some situations no matter the talent level. If I'm right... we may have a mismatch somewhere in consideration of the current state of the organization. Of course... I could also be wrong and I want to repeat that it takes reading between the lines to get to what I just stated.

I love Joe... he's one of my top 5 favorite Twins of all time. I think he's a valuable player and he can still help us win ball games but I feel very strongly that he is no longer an everyday must be on the field player. I see no point in DFA at the present time with the present roster but he needs to improve his performance to justify a permanent spot in the lineup.

Vargas Grossman and Park are currently DH options so I don't think its a total potential punt. -
What To Make Of Kennys Vargas
Riverbrian replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Some clearly are not that high on him and that's ok with me. To be honest... I'm not even asking for 500 PA 's in 2017. If he is struggling... So be it... do what you mast do. I will be looking at 2017 as a prove it year for the majority of the roster. I'm only asking that if he is getting the job done... let him continue. I don't want to see a guy with OPS over a grand benched when a low OPS Vet comes off the disabled list to reclaim his job that he was struggling with. I've grown distrustful of the evaluations that are leading to decision making that causes the benching of a player who has an OPS over 1.000. -
What To Make Of Kennys Vargas
Riverbrian replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yep He goes on an incredible tear and is benched as a reward. Hard to build up those good numbers when your good swings are cut short by the guy who holds your fate in his hands. He struggled in 2015 no doubt but there are many who did the same in year 2. I'm not going to declare him a sure fire superstar... He may end up on the scrap heap of baseball history but he's earned the right to try and have a career and not be put to sleep by some manager with an opinion of what he should be doing that isn't matching up with what he is doing. Let him play himself out of a job when someone actually out produces him and that didn't happen in 2016. Molitor flat out pissed me off last August 4th. I honestly didn't care that much about Vargas prior. Now he's my poster boy. Polanco and Kepler sitting on the bench while the regulars drove the team out of contention by the end of April was when I started thinking that Molitor just might be incapable of adjusting his pre-formed opinion on the fly. His public apology to Brian Dozier for finally sitting him down for one (or two) games after a lengthy period of the struggles at the plate was when I was pretty sure that Molitor might Have locked himself in to pre-opinions. His treatment of Vargas certainly removed any lingering doubts. Let me conclude by saying that I have no idea if Vargas will make it or not if given regular playing time. I just think it was indisputable that Molitor benched a guy who was red hot in favor of someone who wasn't even luke warm. -
Looking at it from the outside. It sure looks like Molitor has an issue with him. Saying that isn't fair to Molitor but I don't know what else to assume from my viewpoint. Vargas was called up on July 4th and then benched August 2nd with a .308/.425/.631 stat line... 1.056 OPS... You don't bench a guy producing like that on team that was producing like it was... unless... someone had stubbornly formed a negative opinion prior to his producing like that. Someone willing to cling to that opinion. I'm not saying that this opinion is wrong but damn it... the player was proving you wrong and you should have let him continue doing that. He was rolling when you benched him and now it appears that that opinion is leading to more of the same before 2017 begins. Vargas was eventually sent down to the minors so Trevor Plouffe and his .678 OPS could play. Here's a late September quote from Paul Molitor: “I can’t give him a black-and-white answer about his future here. I’m going to encourage him about what he’s done and what I think he needs to do better,” Molitor said. “But [with] how many guys we have there, I’m not in position to give him anything overly concrete about what his future is here and what he might be doing.” I also assume that Falvey and Levine are not going to plug their ears and shout LA-LA-LA-LA when Molitor gives his opinion on the current roster.

Why the complete focus on 1st base? We got some anti-Vargas folks in the building or so it seems.

I am suspicious about pitch framing overall but in an attempt to stay open minded... I will say this: The Good Framers appear to be Good Framers year after year. So... the skill sure seems to show some consistency. However... in an attempt to stay closed minded. I still contend that if Pitch Framing truly saves enough runs to pay millions for the elite. You would see correlations between pitch framing and CERA and I don't really see those correlations. In the end... Falvey/Lavine have my support and they obviously buy into the value of pitch framing and I won't stand here and say they are wrong. In a Q&A with Rand of the Trib back in November. Thad Levine stated that he felt the Twins were a little behind in the resources provided to the staff. He mentioned that the first step would be in systems and resources and the 2nd step would be evaluation after everyone has been provided with those resources and tools. He was talking about the staff at the time but the pitching staff also need the advantage of improved resources before being evaluated. For the pitching staff... Castro is a tool.

Additions By Subtractions?
Riverbrian replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I still like the signing of Park for the simple reason that the Twins went out in the IFA Market and competed against everyone else and completed a deal. The Twins need to take these type of risks to compete. I was also never concerned about the logjam because there is no logjam unless multiple players actually perform at a major league level and that hasn't happened yet so gather your assets where you may. Having Mauer and Vargas should never prevent you from adding someone who might be better yet. No matter how this ends... Overall... I'm happy with the signing. But... I sure wish we were better at this. Nishioka was perhaps the worst scouting assessment possible and with Park... the concerns came kind of quick. I remember listening to Tom Kelly on the radio with Ruesse last March. Tom said that Park was noticeably struggling with the increased talent level and he was wasn't sure he'd be able to adjust. I like the signing... I just wish the Twins were better at it.- 38 replies

Twins To Sign RH RP Matt Belisle
Riverbrian replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe that Peralta and Carpenter are comparable to what most fear Sano and Polanco will be. -
To me... the move seems calculated. Such as... they think he will squeeze through. If he does... the move is a nice one. However... If the front office doesn't care if he gets claimed or is hoping that he gets claimed... Umm... that leads my thoughts in a whole new scarier direction. Here are my scary Thoughts:: I'm not aware of any major changes in our scouting and development team. These are the same people with the inside detailed reports on Park that Falvey/Levine would have to use to take under proper consideration for a move like this. This would mean that the same people who are recommending that Park may not be the real deal is coming from the same people who thought he would be the real deal when we signed him for 8 figures. These same people are the ones that I don't totally trust right now.

Twins To Sign RH RP Matt Belisle
Riverbrian replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have seen Belisle pitch a few times... I remember liking his slider and he seemed to throw it a lot... but I've always thought of him as a good low leverage guy. You feel more comfortable when he came into games with the bases empty. -

Every year... I don't get worked up on who the Twins should draft because I have no opinion on players that I haven't seen...but... every year I always hope the Twins take the best College Pitcher available. Because arms that work out have incredible value. If the Twins would have taken my approach... We would have drafted Matt Garza Ian Kennedy Andrew Brackman Andrew Cashner Kyle Gibson Alex Wimmers Andrew Chafin Kevin Gausman Braden Shipley Aaron Nola Tyler Jay Justin Dunn This would also mean that: Chris Parmelee would be with the Braves Ben Revere would be with the Giants Aaron Hicks would be with the Brewers Levi Michael would be with the Rays Byron Buxton and Nick Gordon would be with the Mariners Kohl Stewart would be with the Red Sox Alex Kiriloff would be with the Yankees There ya go... I just can't understand why the Twins haven't called me yet with a job offer.

Personally... I wish Mr. Pohlad would have listened to Nick Nelson last year when he posted back in May? Nick suggested the idea to hire a POBO and it should have been done ASAP after determining that you were going to make a change. Because by waiting... New POBO and GM are brought on board after the world series and the off season is here before they have their socks put away in a drawer. Assess the operations... the players... Whose scouting reports do you trust and use? Do yo have a new way of doing things? If you do... a head start window was passed by when they delayed the hiring of Falvey or any other POBO. When you consider the timeline of the hiring and the internal groundwork that has to be put in place. Falvey and Levine have very little choice but to listen to the same advocates who got us where we are right now... Molitor... Antony... the Western Regional Scout and the traveling secretary are still in the building. This off-season was destined to be a disappointment because Pohlad and St. Peter decided that it could wait until the end of the season. WIth that said... GO GET SOME RELIEVERS... I'll take Blanton and Smith please.
