  1. Yup, smear 'em with accusations of racism. Battle tested! And hey, let's be honest... what else could possibly explain people being concerned about a gubernatorial candidate lying repeatedly about accepting unreported gifts, including at least one from an undercover FBI agent? To no one's surprise, those notorious racist bullies at the ultra-right NYT ran yet another article this morning about the negative impact of more evidence made public yesterday that further supports charges of Gillum's misconduct. But that was before Gillum's snappy sound bite, so I'm sure everything will be fine.
  2. Apologies for jumping to that conclusion, it was just me trying to see your reasoning through to what seems to me to be its likely result. But the fact remains that the primary differentiation of the Senate from the House and the other branches is that it represents all states equally. Failing that, it's hard for me to see what purpose it would serve, or a good argument against doing away with it. And I'm fine with your being dissatisfied with the current system without having a great alternative all worked out. What we have now certainly isn't perfect, and shouldn't be above criticism and conjecture about changing it.
  3. If you're advocating for something other than the abolition of the Senate, and with it states' rights, then I apologize for missing it. But if you are, then several follow-up questions spring to mind. But maybe your answer to the first one will clear up some of the other ones, and that first question is: what's your model for succeeding as a capitalist democracy with no meaningful governing structure other than an omnipotent federal government?
  4. You're not quite getting it, and/or I'm not quite explaining it right. Take Ballotpedia, for starters. It lists 79 House seats as "battleground races". Only 9 are held by Democrats. That gives them 70 battleground opportunities to gain the necessary 23 seats. Even more dramatically, the "leans" incumbent seats are 52 Republican vs 10 Democrat according to the Cook Report, while the "toss-up" seats are a nearly unanimous 46-3 Republican headache. The "map" component of the discussion is just the overall picture of House incumbents vs. the historic redness or blueness trend of their district. Maybe you were taking the map reference literally in terms of district boundaries, since you brought up gerrymandering, but that's not what I'm referring to.
  5. Maybe it would be more fair to them to say that they're cautious. They know that midterm election history in general is on their side, that this particular cycle's electoral map favors them in the House, and that nonstop media coverage of an underwater president whose hobby is uncannily stupid tweets can be more effective than almost any campaign message they might muster in the aggregate. As the saying goes, 'Don't interrupt your enemy while he's making a mistake'. Which he does. Every day. And to their credit, that strategy seemed to be working reasonably well throughout the summer, and even now will probably still comfortably deliver the House. Their mandate above all else is to "Stop Trump", and nothing else comes close. But a Dem push for almost any stripe of universal health care would give a chance for Republicans to do one of the things they do best, which is point out flaws in Democrats' ideas. And what does that get them, other than its unknown net effect on the election? An obligation to follow through with the gesture of putting together a bill that won't become law? The real push for universal care will come in 2020, when there's a chance for it to become law instead of a paper campaign tiger.
  6. No, it's not different, at least not in this case. Trump's midterm disapproval rating is 2% higher than Obama's. That's within the margin of error. Two percent. Their popularity AND "unpopularity" is THE SAME. And the reason I brought it up is that your factually incorrect assumption about Trump's popularity seems to be creating a false expectation on your part regarding the midterms. Edit: To this I would add that YES, it absolutely seems like Trump is more disapproved of than Obama, and the polling similarity genuinely surprised me when i looked it up.
  7. As much as I dislike Trump, I've gotta ask... You do realize that Trump's Gallup approval rating is exactly the same as Obama's was going into the 2010 midterm election, right?
  8. Can we really be certain that only the conservative base is riled up by her calling stay-at-home moms "leeches" and Arizona the "meth lab of democracy"? It seems to me that those and other comments of hers could stray just ever-so-slightly across partisan lines. If conservative PACs have resorted to false or deceptive ads, that's inexcusable. But for the life of me, I can't imagine why they would feel the need to with the freely available ammunition she's provided them with.
  9. Three years. That's what it took in Houston. 2012 was Luhnow's first season running the Astros. After one more awful season followed by a better but still bad one, he put together an 86 game winner with a 93 win Pythag in 2015, after just three years of rebuilding. Nobody is expecting Falvine to build Rome in a day, but it also shouldn't take over half a decade to do better than a yurt.
  10. "Game-changer!"
  11. Doesn't really say anything bad about the Twins? Sure he does. He contrasts the greater time and effort the Astros put into their preparation of pitchers relative to the Twins. Pressly's disclaimer that it's no knock against the Twins indicates one thing and one thing only, which is that his parents raised him to be polite. You could even infer that by going out of his way to describe the Astros' scouting as being on a "different level", Pressly is politely saying that at least relative to the Astros, the Twins don't really know what they're doing. And if "a few years" means more than two for Falvine to get the organization's... stuff... together after nearly a decade of Target field baseball that's mostly ranged from 'competent' all the way down to 'historically embarrassing', I'm going to be bitterly disappointed with ownership. GRRRR!!! End Monday rant. Better now.
  12. I completely agree with you that male entitlement was not the essence of Post's indictment of Kavanaugh's qualification to sit on the SC, in almost exactly the same way that Kavanaugh's response to the allegations were not the essence of his judicial career... and therefore not the essence of his qualification to sit on the SC. And that's coming from someone who at one point in the process favored seeing Kavanaugh being replaced with Barrett, if for no other reason than the inevitable, epic rematch of her appellate confirmation cage fight with Feinstein.

  14. As a moderate, I'd prefer to see male entitlement shifted over to a gender-neutral voucher system.
  15. Partisan ex-Berkeley prof hates Kavanaugh. A lot. Film at 11. Like Hirono, who admitted she felt Kavanaugh was guilty of rape because he's a conservative, at least he's honest. Despite being extraordinarily qualified to deliberate Kavanaugh's future opinions based on their merits or lack thereof, Post informs us that he's made up his mind about Kavanaugh's entire Supreme Court career because "male entitlement".
  16. Setting aside the question of efficacy, an ad in which seniors are caricatured as a bunch of selfish prats is at the very least in much better taste than Jimmy Kimmel calling for the dis"member"ment of Kavanaugh and an audience cheering in approval.
  17. Why do I get the feeling that... ...you're just getting started?
  18. Not that it will make one iota of difference to the regulars at this point, but the decision not to release it is bipartisan, at least according to CNN reporter/stick figure Elizabeth Landers' summary of Feinstein's remarks. If it's any consolation... at the very least, selected bits almost certainly WILL be made public via more "leaks", probably some from each party and exclusively the portions which they deem favorable to their cause.
  19. The kid and I watched the first half of the game and then listened to it on the radio enroute to my parents'. Pulled up to their house just before the top of the ninth. We stopped to talk to the next door neighbors in their yard for a minute and then, quite alarmingly, my parents' door flew open and my dad came running out of the house. My dad is 83. The last time I saw him run, George Bush was president. No, not that one. His dad, H.W. He yelled to me only that 'Mom says come quick!', waving us inside and urging us to hurry. Mom is 80, and the way my dad sounded, it suddenly wasn't looking good for 81. But when we got inside, she was sitting there silently, staring at the television with the volume turned way up, just pointing at the screen as Mauer strode to the plate in his catcher's gear. We all watched it together. Nobody spoke until it was over. How remarkable that a seemingly forgettable season would end with a moment that ranks among the most memorable in the history of the Minnesota Twins.
  20. Unsuperlatives finally fail Bert, and he's forced to quantify the White Sox' awfulness with run differential...
  21. Excellent philosophy for driving as well.
  22. Chicago with no timeouts left, backup quarterback in to mop up. Minnesota just needs to take a few snaps in victory formation.
  23. Tired: "Meh. Astudillo's glove won't play at catcher..." Wired: " W00t!! Studzilla's bat is too valuable to waste at catcher!"
  24. It's worth rewatching a few if for no other reason than to remember how far it pushed the envelope of social issues in its day. Beyond that, since you liked then you'll probably still enjoy it now. Good writing is good writing, and holds up considerably better than hair styles.
  25. My grandma had half a bottle of that stuff the time she made those Christmas cookies that made me cry...
