  1. Several fund managers are high on it.
  2. At his current K rate of 2.6%, 500 Astudillo plate appearances would result in 13 strikeouts. 13. In other words, he could strike out in every at bat of the opening 3 game series (didn't Carlos Gomez do that once?), and then go the entire rest of the season without a K.
  3. The harder everyone works at not comparing him to Brian Harper, the more he reminds me of Brian Harper.
  4. Yup, and the Sox and Royals are too. It's an almost historically bad season for the Central despite the Indians being very good. And maybe it's no fair to pile on a bad season for a struggling organization, but the Twins would probably be a 100 loss team in almost any other division.
  5. I figure they're just doing what they can to keep us from missing baseball for as long as possible after the season finally ends. On the other hand, if they could crank out double digit offense most of the time, I'd probably build my after-work schedule around every broadcast.

  7. In addition to that delicate positive/negative balance, he also seemed pretty adept at working about the right amount of stat-based material into his writing, keeping the eyes of the casual part of his audience from glazing over but not giving it a dumbed down vibe for Fangraphs weirdos like me. Wish him well in his new endeavor. Despite his destination.
  8. The nature of female vulnerability in that dysfunctional social environment and the peer pressure to partake is definitely one of the more chilling aspects of the overall picture being painted of that culture. That kind of behavior absolutely is not confined to any particular income or urban/rural demographic, but as you said, the privileges of wealth seem like a potential catalyst. Taken as a whole, encompassing all the prep scene behavior beyond the ugliest illegal kind, it also just strikes me as a sad and cynical way to finish one's childhood. Spoiled yet bored, driven (internally or externally) to achieve yet disdainful of the opportunities those achievements might bring... there were probably some good, even wonderful things about that environment, but maybe the nature of the current coverage of it and my own personal bias are keeping me from seeing it.
  9. You're right; I should have said 'most' or 'many' conservatives, not "all". In any case, I've no doubt that if you could create the right hypothetical moral and ethical lab experiment, you could find the double standard you're looking for. But applying the real world questions raised about her situation, without judging the questions or the story... ...a 15 year old Christine Oakley Ford packing heat at a teen drunk fest and shooting an alleged rapist would have described the attempted rape in graphic detail to police investigators immediately after it happened rather than to politicians decades later. And regardless of how extraordinarily qualified for a future seat on the Supreme Court that the high school academic achievements and SAT scores of her 17 year old assailant might have made him seem, there would have been no national political implications involved in her accusation of his illegal behavior.
  10. There are other posts that I could link this thought to, but I chose yours for no particular reason. And I apologize if it's off topic, but just thought I'd throw it out there: Is the media's digging into the D.C. prep school culture that's gone along with this incident making anybody else feel not only NOT the least bit envious of the 'privileged' children of D.C.'s 'elites', but absolutely grateful not to have grown up in that environment? I'm sure the circumstances are casting that culture in an especially bad light, but still... bummer.
  11. Completely agree that you don't want a chihuahua attorney representing you in the D.C. dog fight arena. But Avanetti's bio reads like a Hollywood caricature of a high roller sleezeball, and maybe a guy who's made a decent chunk of his living off of suing Trump for over a decade isn't a good choice for someone who wants it to be known that they're just an apolitical bystander who's only there to tell their story and be on their way.
  12. I'm trying to see any point to this, other than that you believe all conservatives are hypocrites. And I can't. Maybe you could clarify.
  13. You know how the old saying goes... Variety is the spice of soul-crushing defeat.
  14. It was meant to be as much a criticism of the hole the Twins have dug for themselves at SS as a compliment to Polanco. He'd be a better overall utility infielder than other guys they've lived with over the years, and less of a Roland Emmerich disaster movie as a stopgap everyday player than sometimes projected. And I probably wouldn't even have commented on the play, let alone the player, if the Twins FO's plan at that position were anything more than waiting for Royce Lewis to rise out of the organizational pumpkin patch and deliver shortstop sweetness to all the good kids who believe.
  15. Not saying Polanco is THE answer at short, but on that nice two-out pick and throw to preserve the tie, he was at least AN answer.
  16. Yeah, there's 'aggressive', and there's 'Oh, crap, my bad Ehire, you're gonna be ou...' "SAFE! SafeSafeSafe! I knew it!"
  17. Stu calmly ties the game with that compact, quick stroke, and on the first pitch of course, because why stand there any longer than you need to? If Astudillo The Player finishes the season being even close to as good as Astudillo The Story, then he's probably my favorite bright spot in a season that's been woefully short of them.
  18. Ford says she didn't talk about it until therapy in 2012. If Judge actually participated and then bragged about it so freely that it became common knowledge at another school, then it seems likely that not only would other corroborative witnesses exist, but also that an authority figure of some sort would have gotten wind of it and followed up at the time. An investigation might potentially answer some questions, but the partisan, poo-flinging debate over an FBI investigation would probably rival the standoff over the shape of the table at the Paris Peace Accords for sheer futility. Even NPR seems to be throwing in the towel on an investigation, stating that the "short answer" to whether SJC can enlist the FBI to investigate the claim is "no". Cokie Roberts, hardly a Fox shill, has called for Ford to testify regardless of FBI involvement, and Dems in close re-election fights are wavering on that demand as well. All of that comes with the caveat that as with any issue where Trump is involved, common sense and precedent are not in play.
  19. That seems confusing to me. Dr. Blasey Ford has said she didn't tell anyone, so how did it come to be common knowledge at her school?
  20. Like... total, or just the ones they throw with? Only twelve relievers listed as 'RP' by MLB.com, plus Magill and other assorted strays who are listed as 'SP' for reasons unknown. Well, g'night all, gotta get up early and go wait by the mail box for my Chase De Jong sherzey to arrive.
  21. You didn't mention Belisle in your list of keepers, but then again I guess it just goes without saying that if he's made it this far...
  22. "I ain't got the words..."
  23. Berger goes full count on Perez, a guy who will pretty much run into the stands to swing at a pitch out of the zone.
  24. Do they even have 26 saves recorded as a team?
  25. Nuh uh, Chief gets the blown TD save for turning the thread over to me (see above). Looks like I'm in line for the almost certain 'L' about now with runners at the corners and fewer than 3 outs.
