  1. Yeah... I wonder if the FO earmarked $60M that we saved (over 4 years) by trading for Archer instead of signing Darvish, what they could do. It could be used for literally whatever they deemed necessary to build back the farm system assets that were used to get Archer. Basically they'd be buying comp picks, and Intl FA money, and have a full willingness to take on contracts with 1-2 year left, from teams like Miami who are begging to shed payroll. How much does a Comp A pick "cost" How much does $2M in Intl FA pool "cost" If we literally had $60M to play with could we end up with 5 comp A/B picks? How big of a Draft pool salary cap could one team amass? Nobody has tested those waters. Why not be the first?
  2. I stand by my statement. Measured by the only thing that matters. Runs. Analytics can predict future results, but actual results can only be measured by one thing.
  3. I can't remember the last player/team the national media thought the Yankees DIDN'T line up well with
  4. This is the kind of unsubstantiated opinion that makes me roll my eyes (no offense). At age 24, in 2013, Chris Archer was the 44th rated minor league prospect, after a 2012 3.8 ERA at AAA, with around 9.5K/9 Nobody would've said that 2013 Chris Archer's ceiling was actual Chris Archer's performance Pitching is fickle. I think talking about pitchers' ceilings is silly. There are too many examples every year of "WTF" to convince me that modern analytics have a great handle on pitchers. At the end of the day, results matter. Certain previous results can indicate likelihood of future success, but ceilings of successful minor league pitchers still seem more art than science. Having said all that, I have NO PROBLEM trading either of those minor leaguers for Cole or Archer
  5. I don't disagree with some of the opinions above about the state of our pitching staff, but when you compare it to other teams, 75-1 seems a bit low. No "local" bookmakers are even taking MLB futures bets at this point, but if I was in Vegas right now I'd throw down $100 at 75-1, and go to confession every day. The Twins likely have a top 3 AL offense next year.... one hot pitching signee and one pitching minor league flash-in-the-pan and we're in the conversation. 75-1 is a really good number.
  6. And yet, someone who signed a minor league deal last offseason, has just been declared the best FA reliever of this class
  7. We'll never know, but I wonder if things would have been different had Jose Fernandez not been killed in the boat accident.
  8. Well... this thread really delivered
  9. I mean, if you go strictly on what they paid him, he should be around Enlow. Realistically, in an open market, as is the case with Intl free agents, you'll have to overpay a bit. So he's probably 4-5 spots worse than Enlow
  10. I like the idea of an increasing value on WAR 1st WAR - 3m 2nd WAR - 5m 3rd WAR - 7m 4th WAR - 9m 5th WAR - 10m So... a 2 WAR player would be worth 8m annually and a 4 WAR player would be worth 24m annually Maybe my escalation numbers are a little low, but you get the idea
  11. Just for the sake of argument, in a month, could the Twins trade Seattle's prospect back to them for $1.5m in this year's intl bonus pool, which would be enough that we could afford the $2.5m in this year's pool. Basically, are we locked into using next year's money, or do we have until July 1st to figure out what bucket it comes from.
  12. So... where is CC going to pitch now?
  13. By the way, i highly recommend that podcast. Dougie Wolfsen gets a bunch of interviews. About half of them I have no interest in, but Levine comes on for 20 minutes every few weeks.
  14. Thad Levine was on "The Scoop" podcast this week talking about Sano's recovery. He sounded like he had zero concern about Sano's 100% availability at the beginning of spring training.
  15. Give Cruz a QO after next season and we'd likely end up with a better prospect than any of the Braves scraps
  16. All of our Intl Cap money to Seattle for Nelson Cruz? 1/14M left on his contract. Primary DH blocking Ohtani Who says no?
  17. We did spend it. We just also unspent it. The timing of which, was ideal for our Ohtani hopes and dreams but not ideal for respending it.
  18. Well... he's not getting 23, so based on that logic I guess he's retiring.
  19. Also, can we pay Hughes $1 per year for the next 13,000,000 years?
  20. I said this in another thread, but it's more appropriate here. What about going to Mauer and offering a 2/22 extension, but then smoothing out the next three years to 15/15/15 instead of 23/11/11? This would provide some flexibility to the team for 2018 and maybe allow the Twins to add one more important piece (if they are working with an internal "hard cap")
  21. I would say Lewis on 3rd, Polanco on 2nd, and Gordon at Short
  22. Did I miss when Rooker hit like Babe Ruth? It's such an incredibly small sample, for a college graduate, in leagues he should dominate.... and he still struck out 26% of the time. I mean, I like him as a prospect, but I feel like there's serious Rooker overhyping going on here (and yes... I know the "rooker is my whole top 5" post was a joke)
  23. The Twins did have the best offense in the league in the 2nd half, mostly without Sano and mostly with young players. That doesn't mean we can survive with crap pitching, but it does set the bar a little lower
  24. Additionally, our higher end pitching prospects can get their feet wet in the bullpen rather than being rushed into the rotation.
