  1. It's possible that more of the Twins foreign players have picked up English and might not feel it is necessary to put on an application that they want Spanish speaking. Also, it's possible that the Reds really do have a lot more Spanish-speaking players. This is an interesting topic. For the sake of argument let's say that the Reds really do have more Spanish-speaking players at AA than the Twins. Why would that be? They must roughly have the same number of foreign players entering the lower levels of their organizations. The Reds and Twins both have one Dominican summer league team (some orgs have 2). The Reds look like they have one more Rookie level affiliate, but I'm not sure how that might matter. If anything, with how the Twins have focused early in their drafts on Puerto Rican players, I would almost think they might start with slightly more. Do a higher percentage of Twins draft picks (mostly english speaking) rise through the system compared to the Reds having more success with foreign prospects? Would that be from better international scouting by the Reds? Better organizational support by the Reds for foreign players? Better domestic scouting by the Twins?
  2. I'll just check the farmers almanac and assume it's going to be right.
  3. Tim Collins... For the sake of argument, let's say someone assumed to make the opening day bullpen goes on the IL (Reed seems like a good candidate). Since he has an April 1 opt out do we think he might make the team over, say Hildenberger?
  4. No too many obvious guys to take off the 40 man, probably Duffey and Reed being the most obvious, but there could be a 60-day IL stint between now and then. How does the 60-day work at the start of the season? Could Sano’s stint be retroactive to the surgery?
  5. I need a reminder about what kind of contract he signed.
  6. I wouldn't say you went to far, but I'd say it was close. It was a pretty long article so 10-15% ended up being quite a bit of actual text. From Twins-centric paywall articles I think it's fair to do some copy and pasting to give potential readers a taste of the article. How do people know the content they are missing if they can't ever see any of the content? But, from MLB-centric articles that have a few Twins parts (like a Keith Law top 100 article), I shy away from any copy and pasting and tend to, in that example, just report the rankings. But, that's just me, and I'm not a moderator.
  7. And PED Testing Season
  8. Maybe I should phrase it differently. What’s the larger number? Strikes that are realistically stealable or legit strikes that are missed due to poor receiving.
  9. I’d be interested to know from the experts.... What’s more important? Stealing strikes or not giving away strikes?
  10. You'll never hear me complain about the Twins spending money, but this strikes me as a strange use of resources. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends the CJ Cron era before it ever really started. We can cut him a check for right around $1M (saving $3M) and send him on his way.
  11. Sam Miller on ESPN.com Who is the biggest winner of Machado joining the Padres? Miller: Cleveland. With the White Sox failing to sign Machado, Cleveland can now be pretty sure no other team in the division will win even 85 games this year. Terry Francona can start resting his players for the playoffs ... now.
  12. I think it's a fair assumption that the Twins wanted to do this since they probably have some payroll room now and are willing to front load the contract because of that. However, it's entirely possible that as part of the negotiations, the Kepler team gave up a little bit in overall guaranteed dollars in exchange for a sharp immediate increase.
  13. Some GMs are judged on Championships, but the vast majority are judged on not messing up. This, moreso than collusion, is the reason the high-priced FA are not finding long-term Landing spots
  14. As for my original search. Not too much good data, but this image is interesting.... http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2015/0401/sn_fbmap1_576x324.jpg
  15. I was in search of real market size data and stumbled upon this article, on fangraphs, from 2016.... Estimated TV revenue for each team: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/estimated-tv-revenues-for-all-30-mlb-teams/ Two things stood out to me. 1) While we around 20th on the list, we really are not that far from 7th (Phillies - 20M difference). 2) They talk about Ownership stake in the cable network and list the Twins as having ZERO ownership stake in FSN. I thought that was well established at this point.
  16. Nobody ever talks about the taxes with California and NY. CA is higher and NY is comparable.
  17. That region has twice as many people as the Twins region.
  18. Not that I think there's any chance the Twins can approach that type of TV deal, but their current deal is more than a few years old, which is probably one of the reasons it's pretty far down in the rankings. Let's look at the market size for a second... SEA-TAC - 3.9M MSP - 3.6M But obviously the games are being broadcast beyond the immediate metro area. Let's look at the regional population, where the "local" games are likely being broadcast Washington + Oregon + Idaho = 13.5M Minnesota + ND + SD = 7.2M There are some parts of Wisconsin and Iowa that are part of the Twins region, but not the very populated parts. At most, it probably adds up to 8.5M
  19. Regarding the 3 batter minimum.... I like it. "People would find a way to cheat" isn't a good argument against because a) rules could be put in place to prevent much of that (Auto DL stint, fines for teams/managers) and b.) it would happen very rarely. I do think it needs a little tweak though. 3 batter minimum OR end of the inning. You shouldn't force pitchers to bridge innings.
  20. One other thing worth noting, I think, is that as teams have changed hands (for massive sums of money) over the years, many of them lost their ownership’s link to the community. As owners losing touch with their communities, they’ve become less willing to do things “for the sake of the fans”
  21. We all recognize the name, but Justus Sheffield was a pretty similar prospect last spring compared to Graterol right now.
  22. This is about where I fall. I believe Machado will be a better player, but I'd rather root for Harper. Would a Kepler and Graterol package be about right for Robbie Ray?
  23. Congrats to Declan Goff for wasting my time and getting one more click. The headline was, of course, misleading. It was an article about an article that had no evidence or sources, just speculation.
