    I think Polanco might have me more worried than any other Twins hitter right now... 2 Ks tonight already, and his only saving grace this season has been his ability to at least make contact.

    I'm going to shamelessly steal a very good take from Aaron Gleeman here. Wouldn't you rather over-rest players now while the games are much less meaningful than they will be four weeks from now? It may seem like they are being overly cautious with guys like Donaldson and Buxton, and maybe they are, but it does the team no good to bring them back too quickly and risk re-aggravating injuries, which would put them in doubt to play at all in the postseason. By giving them extra rest now, they are (hopefully) setting up for a situation where they can come back soon, use September to find their groove, and have them locked in for the playoffs. If they're sacrificing a couple of regular season wins in the name of this strategy, I'm completely fine with it. Now, this all rests on the hope that these guys will be able to work through any issues they have in the next four weeks, which is far from a given... But I have no problem with how they're handling the guys on the IL so far this season.

    I thought this might be the case as well, but when I looked it up on Fangraphs, the Twins' O-Swing% (which is the % of balls outside of the strike zone that they swing at) is actually down compared to last season (32.6% in 2019, ranked 10th in MLB vs. 30.1% in 2020, 15th in MLB). Furthermore, their Z-Swing% (which is the % of balls in the strike zone that they swing at) is WAY down compared to last season (70.8% in 2019, 4th in MLB vs. 65.9% in 2020, 23rd in MLB). Overall, they're making about the same amount of contact when they swing in 2020 vs. 2019. This suggests that they're not being aggressive enough this season since they're looking at significantly more strikes without swinging. It seems like this could be coaching related... Perhaps they've been preaching more patience at the plate this season? Although, I'm not sure why they would want to change their approach after last season's success at the plate. It could also just be that they've only played 35 games and are still honing their eyes at the plate. Or maybe it's simply a matter of more plate appearances going to more patient hitters, since free swingers like Schoop and Cron are no longer on the team.

    I get what you're saying here. We all want to see the Twins win as many games as possible. The thing is, with the stupid playoff format this year, winning the division is heavily disincentivized compared to a normal season. Considering that every playoff team has to play a best-of-three series in the first round, no matter how they finish in the regular season, I would argue that their odds of advancing past the first round are only marginally higher if they win the division instead of finishing second or third and still getting into the playoffs. As a Minnesota sports fan, I just felt the need to clarify that my seemingly optimistic stance about this team is really based in a longer term pessimism. Just wanna make sure I don't lose my MN sports fan cred.

    It just plain sucks to watch this lineup right now. That being said, let's all just take a deep breath. Go take a look at the playoff odds on Fangraphs. By their projections, even after this awful weekend of games, the Twins still have higher odds of winning the World Series (6.6%) than missing the playoffs (5.2%). Right now is a much better time for them to be slumping than a month from now. Also, even if disaster struck and they lose the rest of their games and miss the playoffs, I still think it would be incredibly short-sighted to make any management changes based solely on this goofy, short season. Are there really Twins fans out there who are willing to overlook last year's 101-win season and fire someone based on a few bad weeks this season?

    Actually the Yankees aren't looking so hot right now, they're 4 games back and have lost 7 straight, so it would more likely be the Rays or the Indians... Although that doesn't take into account the universal constant that the Twins must be bounced by the Yankees in the first round.

    I believe the division winners get the top 3 seeds, the second place finishers get seeds 4-6, and the next two best records get 7-8.

    This team desperately needs Donaldson back, and luckily it sounds like he might be back next week. This lineup is hard to watch right now. I guess it's not that surprising when half of the starters aren't playing.

    I love me some Jason Isbell, and I'm absolutely tickled by his tweet. I agree, let's keep on riding Red Hot Randy until the wheels fall off! Also, that call of the Sox walk-off made me chuckle: "Good night Guaranteed Rate Field!" Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

    3-batter minimum and universal DH: I hope both of these are here to stay. The 3-batter rule actually requires a lot more strategic thinking in my mind than just bringing in a guy for one batter. Also, I've never enjoyed watching pitchers hit (with the glorious exception of Big Sexy). 7-inning doubleheaders: I'm fine with them this season, but the rule kind of has a little league feel to me so I hope this one doesn't stick around beyond 2020. Runner on 2nd in extra innings: I was convinced that this was a stupid, awful rule, but I don't hate it as much as I thought I would. I'm okay with it sticking around in future seasons, but I would prefer if they played at least the 10th inning without the rule, possibly the 11th as well, but then have it apply from the 12th inning and beyond. Expanded rosters: Not really sure, don't have strong feelings one way or another.

    Who has said that you're no longer allowed to enjoy the pleasures of sporting events? The game that you were hoping to watch yesterday was postponed by one day. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans today. The inconveniences that these protests have caused to the average fan are pretty minor in the grand scheme of things...

    Yeah, this is NOT the season to make a move like that. With Big Mike coming back next week and most of the guys on the IL hopefully getting healthy soon, I'm hoping that'll provide the playoff boost that the Twins need.

    I think the point is that you unnecessarily set up a straw man by arguing against the players being considered "brave" when literally nobody was saying that.

    Yeah, I agree. It's the same as the idea that if you're the favored team in a series, you want that series to have as many games as possible because if you play enough games, the better team will eventually come out on top. That's why I'm so mad about the three game first round playoff series format this year, we're almost certain to see one of the top tier teams get dumped out of the playoffs by a couple of fluky wins by Toronto or some other middling team. And if our Twins happen to that team... Well, it's going to be another long, rueful offseason.
