  1. The virus has really taken the wind out of my baseball sails. A half season with new divisions just doesn't sound that appealing. I will always have to look at this season as a special case where the World Series doesn't hold as much clout or even count. At this point I hope they totally blow it up with a once in a lifetime season. Do like a short season then an all 30 team playoff or something ridiculous.
  2. The 3rd base coach shouldn't be touching the ball anyway. He can touch his face all he wants IMO.
  3. The odds of catching the virus have to be so much higher doing ordinary daily essential activity than catching it from the surface of a briefly held baseball where everyone is being constantly tested. They will never get to zero risk, it comes down to do you want to go to work and make money with a small chance of catching/spreading it or sit this season out and possibly next season. Even if an outbreak does occur, there are no fans so each game exposes what, a hundred people at most? Ask the local cashier making $10 per hour how much they care that you have to throw and catch a baseball. “I don’t think catchers are going to want to have a bottle of hand sanitizer taped on them so they take a splash every time they handle a baseball." Don't touch your face between every pitch!
  4. The entire stadium will be empty, I think they can find room for each team to spread out.
  5. If owners take a big loss this year, payrolls will decline for 2021 and beyond. One way or the other the players will split this revenue loss.
  6. Offseason trades are an interesting topic if the season is cancelled. Teams acquiring major league talent with the intention of winning in 2020 got hosed (luckily the Twins had multiple seasons in mind with their big trade). Remember when the Red Sox were laughed at for the Betts trade. It is looking like an absolute steal now. If the season is canceled, The Dodgers gave Alex Verdugo, Jeter Down, Conner Wong and took on about 75M for the 35 and 36 year old seasons of David Price.
  7. If the Indians are still in the playoff picture in any way I don't see him being moved this July. They could still trade him in the next offseason or extend him beyond 2021. Since they don't have any real dead weight contracts, they could still work out a deal. This doesn't really mean anything unless they fall out of the playoff picture entirely by July. The Yankees have a decent farm system, they are just young. Their top prospect (already 54th) will probably be one of the top prospects in a year or 2 since he is only 17. Plus no team really has the flexibility that the yankees do, they could include one of Urshela, or Torres and give the Indians a cheap replacement that isn't that steep of a drop off in talent.
  8. CBS fantasy baseball podcast also had a nice tidbit on the Astros beanings. It was from a while ago so I am not sure how much this has changed. At the time the Astros were leading ST in hit by pitches and everyone was writing articles about it being retribution. Of those that were hit only Jose Altuve was with the 2017 team or guaranteed a spot on this years team. Jose Altuve's lone beaning was a curveball that barely got his foot. Seems unlikely that pitchers are gunning down Houston minor leaguers or throwing curveballs at their feet as retribution.
  9. I'm curious what are everyone's thoughts on pitchers using illegal substances to grip the baseball better. The post below is from Trade rumors yesterday and quotes Angels pitcher Andrew Heaney as saying most pitchers are currently doing it. It reminds me of the Pineda pine tar incident and a little of the Astros sign stealing incident where MLB is basically saying please be more discreet with your cheating. The Angels fired visiting clubhouse manager Brian Harkins on Thursday amid allegations that he provided “illegal substances” to help opposing pitchers grip the ball better, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports. The news did not come as a surprise to the Angels, per Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register. “I think everybody knows that most guys are doing it,” left-hander Andrew Heaney said. “I don’t think it’s that surprising for anybody who knows baseball.” Pitching coach Mickey Callaway told Fletcher he expects Major League Baseball to ban hurlers from using pine tar and other such substances, but he believes it could have a detrimental effect because they help pitchers’ control – especially in cold conditions. “If I were a hitter, I’d be scared to dig into the box in Detroit on April 10,” he said. Manager Joe Maddon also weighed in, saying pitchers have been using substances to better their grip for “as long as I’ve been in baseball.” Maddon wonders whether MLB will eventually have to make changes to the ball, as the current one has become slicker.
  10. I listened to the radio broadcast for the first 3 or 4 innings. It was the St Louis broadcast and the only things that stuck out to me were how badly the announcers made fun of Kirilloff's throw home in the 1st inning and how bad they said the umps were. Sounded like a Twin hit a homerun that was badly mistaken for a foul (2nd inning I think) and it seemed like there were 2 or 3 pitches per half inning that the announcers disagreed with. I am not familiar with the STL radio crew but I got the feeling they would always be kind of annoying. This is just some of what they said about Kirilloff's throw "Throw to the plate from left field is terrible, really bad throw" "That was an absolute rainbow" "yeah the only thing it was missing was Dorothy and Toto" (Laughing from both announcers)
  11. Seems like a stretch to say they are "chasing history" by saying they might be the best in a single hitting category that is also being manipulated with a threshold. But there were some great 1b/3b combos that I don't think they compare to. Just a few of my favorites from the last 20-25 years Pujols/Scott Rolen Adrian Beltre/Kevin Youklis Miguel Cabrera/Prince Fielder A-Rod/Mark Teixeria A-rod/Jason Giambi Jason Giambi/Eric Chavez Chipper Jones/Fred McGriff Chipper Jones/Andres Galarraga
  12. People know Tom Brady and Lebron because they win. Mike Trout does not win. The All star games aren't what make Tom Brady or Lebron James marketable because no one cares about the Pro Bowl or NBA All Star game either. I don't think the All Star break is the marketing fix that will bring celebrity to MLB. Comparing a QB or NBA player to a baseball player doesn't really work because it is impossible for one baseball player to contribute as much to a team's success as in those sports. Like the Mike Trout case, the best player of all time cannot make the post season alone while Lebron James would take the Wolves or any other team to the playoffs every season. With Aaron Rogers, the Packers are a good team but without him they are flat out bad. One of my favorite things about baseball is that there is a unique balance of individual and team performance. Do your job and rely on the next guy to do his job. (I also think if someone follows any major sport other than baseball they will still have an idea of who Mike Trout is and could probably name the team he plays for.)
  13. Dozier still has value against lefties. 2019 L .280 ave, .900 OPS, 128 wRC+ R.221 Ave, .719 OPS, 88 wRC+ Career L .270 Ave, .855 OPS, 129 wRC+ R .236 ave, .737 OPS, 99 wRC+
  14. I took "Flimsy at best" as pretty far from concrete but maybe that's just me. And Maeda is still probably seen as a health risk as well. Just because he made it four seasons doesn't erase what they saw before signing him. The Dodgers would still be correct if he requires Tommy John at some point. How will his elbow hold up if he is leaned on for more than the 137 innings he has averaged over the last 3 years?
  15. The Red Sox have actual doctors looking at actual medical charts and scans. We only have his past injury history (which is bad) to make our assumptions off of. Saying that the doctors didn't find anything is based on nothing. Journalists and fans have no idea what is in his medical scans. There is no way that they had an accurate description of his health before the physicals portion of the trade. No one on the Twins said they disagree with the Red Sox opinion.
  16. So whatever concerns arose in Boston's eyes when they looked at Brusdar Graterol's medicals, causing them to sour on him and back out of the original trade, were flimsy at best. Not sure I agree with this logic....You are comparing someone who was seen as a risk for future elbow issues to someone with past elbow and shoulder issues. Someone with "irregularities" in the elbow to someone who has a repaired elbow and past shoulder injuries. Someone who might someday tear his UCL to someone who has torn it. Someone who might at some point miss significant time but never has to someone who already has missed significant time multiple times. The Dodgers were able to sign Maeda to a risk free deal. They were not giving up an annual MVP candidate when they signed him. I think the Red Sox did the smart thing by getting more. They took on Verdugo knowing that he currently had a back injury, I think whatever they found was concrete. Notice how the Dodgers or Twins never publicly disagreed with the Red Sox assessment. The Red Sox came to the same conclusion the Twins did, he is most likely a reliever.
  17. Adrianza and Gonzalez are set to be Free Agents after this season. Gordon could have a shot in the utility player(s) competition for 2021.
  18. What is his trade value though? He has been fading from the prospect lists, Fangraphs moved him all the way down to 35th in our system. They could include him as a supplementing piece of a bigger package or trade him for another fringe prospect at a different position that isn't as blocked.
  19. When you are allowing 7 of 15 teams into the playoffs I think you can expect mediocre teams in the playoffs every season. They might not be sub .500 teams very often but I think teams will start to think if they only have to pay for a .500 team then fans will be happy because they made or almost made the playoffs. It sounds like a Pohlad dream scenario. I wonder if Manfred's desire to get MIke Trout into the playoff spotlight had anything to do with this proposal.
  20. Apply the rule to 2017 and 2 sub .500 teams are in the playoffs. That is gross. At least they would have had to settle a 3 way tie of 80-82 teams. Cleveland 102-60 Houston 101-61 Boston 93-69 NYY 91-71 Twins 85-77 KC 80-82 LAA 80-82 Rays 80-82
  21. I do appreciate the irony that we went from saying the Giants sent us damaged goods in Sam Dyson to complaining that the Red Sox wouldn't accept what we insist is a healthy player.
  22. I don't know if Selig is the best example of someone to dole out punishment. He did everything he could to ignore the PED issue.
  23. "However, there’s a marked difference between truly damaged, injured baseball players—especially pitchers—and merely risky ones. I would argue the difference is one of kind, not of degree, and that the ability of one team to apply their own prognoses to subjective medical data after a trade has been agreed upon is unfair to the other party in said trade and to the player himself." Since none of the teams announced the trade and it was not official then how can we accuse the Red Sox of doing anything wrong? The issue is probably with the way this was reported. Everyone ran with it before it was official and looked silly when it fell through. Not because of the Red Sox but because of the way this was reported, millions of people formed their 1st opinion of Graterol and unfortunately it was as damaged goods. This website alone had like 5 articles about Maeda being a Twin before the deal was official. The deal got to the pending physicals part and the Red Sox didn't like what they saw. They have every right to do what they did. It would be terrible if we held teams to decisions prior to the medical reviews. They absolutely have the right to have their own staff go over the history and make their own conclusions. It is unfair to say they are wrong in their conclusions. Your argument is "we think he is okay so you are required to feel the same way"? Up next we will look at why players can't ask a second opinion before surgery.
  24. I think it was a fail safe for if he didn't transition well but as the years went on they utilized that more. It seemed to be their plan to replace him at the deadline. He was strictly a member of their rotation to start these seasons but as he performed worse he started less. He would start the season as a legitimate option. If we take it month by month for his career I think the Dodgers were planning for this decline the last few seasons. They were either lucky in their contract structuring or had at least some idea that he might not hold up to full seasons of starting. mar/apr 3.97 ERA may 3.67 June 2.83 July 4.40 August 4.50 September 3.99 (mostly out of the bullpen)
  25. I'm a little concerned with Maeda. There is the weird usage with the Dodgers. Will he hold up in a full season of a starting role? Was that only done because they had too many capable pitchers or was it by design to ease his workload? Judging by the contract structure, that was their intent all along to have him in that split role. There is also the switch to the AL. I'm not convinced he will be anything more than a mid 4's ERA guy with us. He already shows signs of wearing down as the season goes on. The Dodgers had him entirely out of the bullpen in September the last 2 season. That could just be to pay him less but the numbers support that decision. 2019 pre all-star game 3.76 ERA 17 games 17 starts July 5.11 ERA 6 games 5 starts August 4.26 ERA 5 games 5 starts September 3.45 ERA 10 games 0 starts 2018 Pre all-star game 3.12 ERA 18 games 16 starts July 3.86 ERA 5 games 4 starts August 5.74 ERA 6 games 2 starts September 4.22 ERA 12 games 0 starts We don't really know what we lost with Graterol but Maeda seems like a question mark as well. Steamer updated their projection to 150 innings of 4.63 ERA with the Twins for what its worth.
