You have to play (and pay) somebody. I guarantee any MLB team would be satisfied with the results of a trade of a minor minor leaguer for a starting pitcher who goes 15-7, 3.51 ERA and an even better FIP of 3..36 with 178 Ks in 159 innings.

He did - ironically, with the Twins in 2022. He was a utility player and even pitched in two games. Clearly he wasn't much of a prize.

I'd let it ride with Ryan. With a crop of young hitters likely to emerge from St. Paul later in the year - plus a strong starting rotation - next year should be a play-off challenging team. You make Ryan a QO, if he moves on, you've got a decent draft pick, and there are some other intriguing arms coing up the pipeline as well (including, gasp, left handers).

It also led to a revolving door at SS - Punto, Cabrera, Hardy, Nishioka, Floriman, etc., etc. That's also no way to construct a defense.

Agreed - however, to balance out the discussion, there's the Delmon Young trade. Ouch.

Twins (Bradley) Vs Tigers (Skubal): 6:40 pm CDT, 4/7/25

Right - but watch the comments on the game - people will complain nonetheless. -
They just beat one of the two best starting pitchers in baseball - I said what I said.

It's always interesting to read the (lack of) positive comments after a 7-3 Twins victory.

Agree on Culpepper. The problem with Roden is where does he play? He's not a CF, and spelling Buxton is Outman's primary role. Larnach is 5 for 15 with 2 doubles, 5 walks and only 1 K, so hard to move him off the platoon with Martin. For all Wallner's warts, he is still an impactful offensive player and leads the Twins in HRs with 3.

Culpepper is raking at AAA - 34 ABs, 3 HR, .927 OPS. My guess is, if he keeps hitting like this, come May he will be playing on the other side of the Mississippi River. I'd prefer Emma over Outman as well, but if Larnach keeps hitting, it's hard to call him up to just give Buxton a day off from CF every now and then.

They are 0-3 in 1 or 2 run games - it's not like their 4 wins have been nail biters.

I don't think your memory is all that great. Eddie Rosario, for example, was productive for his first five years with the Twins, and I don't recall anybody (after phe posted a 2.3 WAR his rookie year) who was screaming for a replacement. It really wasn't until he was to hit free agency that many (including me) considered him not worth a longer term investment. With Kirilloff, it wasn't on the field performance that derailed him, it was a chronic wrist injury. Meanwhile, fans have been more than patient with Royce Lewis - and, for that matter, as far back as Byron Buxton, who didn't hit much his first four years. Again, nobody (understanding his enormous potential and his great defensive value) was screaming for a new CF at that time.

i had hoped the Twins would start the season with at least Emma on the 26 man roster and trade Larnach. Of course, Larnach has started 3 for 8 with a couple of doubles and 4 walks to 1 K. Last night, one of the '29 to 31 year old re-treads' Tristin Gray hit a grand slam and drove in 5 runs.

He leads the team or is tied for the lead in most offensive categories: Runs, Doubles, Home Runs, RBI, Total Bases, Walks, Slugging Percentage, OPS. Yes, it's only 6 games, but the Twins will take it.

If he has an OPS over 1.000, the BA should be the least of our worries.

True, although Wallner has three walks through two games, which is how he's got a .375 OBP.

"Proven veterans" don't magically escape the sands of time. Neither pitcher was passing the "eye test" (ok, radar gun test) this year. That said, there are far better examples of veterans who outwore their welcome than Joey Gallo (maybe one with the initials MM?). Gallo carried the team's offense early in 2023, hit 21 HRs, had a .741 OPS, 100 OPS+, 0.5 WAR and played decent defense. The Twins should be so lucky if Larnach replicates that this year. Manual Margot, by contrast, was .626 OPS, 76 OPS+, -0.9 WAR in 2024 and far from a good defensive outfielder.
